Clothes shrinking in the wash

Not really an AIBU posting for a quick reply as Google didn't help so for that I know IABU!
If you actively wanting to shrink some jeans in the wash how would you do it? I have a washing machine which goes up to 90 degrees and a tumble drier. I wasn't really sure on what size I was as have lost some weight recently I should of done my measurements but didn't. I thought I was a 12 after trying the jeans I was wrong. I measured my waist it is 26.5 inches so I would be an 8 a size 12 is 29 inches from this brand so it should be a doable shrinkage. Label says wash at 40 so would a 90 degree wash followed by a tumble dry do it? Or a 60 degree wash? I have never accidentally shrank anything.

jeans generally tighten in the dryer but loosen with wear - the good ones are designed not to shrink.

That's annoying! They are 1 pair Next lift and slim and 2 pairs of Next the leggings, not sure why they are called that tho cause they are jeans.

Oh my point is I have no idea if they are good ones!

Can't you return them? I can't see you being able to shrink them two sizes!

THEsonofaBITCH · 23/11/2018 12:50

Confused take them back to Next? Should be returnable for 30 days even without the receipt.

OliviaBenson · 23/11/2018 12:53

You can't shrink them to fit, that's madness! Take them back.

SleepWarrior · 23/11/2018 12:53

I'd go for a hot wash and then a hot tumble until bone dry. I've never shrunk jeans though, just wool based stuff and that shrinks if you look at it the wrong way.

Can you not return them?

OkToday · 23/11/2018 12:53

I didn't buy them from Next so can't take them back otherwise I would of done that. I took some of my to big things to a clothing exchange place and feel very silly and a bit rude trying to exchange them. It is probably fine I just feel a bit awkward about it.

Just exchange them there then?

Crazyladee · 23/11/2018 12:55

You could try it but as a pp said, two dress sizes is a bit ambitious.

You are also risking the length of the jeans shrinking as well.

OkToday · 23/11/2018 12:57

Ok it seems it is a crazy idea, I will suck up the embarrassment and give them a call.

On a more positive note it is a great place to exchange clothing and it is all in good condition shame there isn't more places like it around. They are closed until 1:30 so will give them a call then.

It depends on how much lycra is in them. The higher the proportion of lycra - the more likely you are to just damage them. They might shrink in places and not others.

OkToday · 23/11/2018 14:05

They said it is fine to exchange them so drama over.

I always carry a tape measure with me when I shop for clothes. The different shops sizes can vary widely, so I just measure the waistband of what I'm interested in to check it will fit.

I'm old enough to remember when a size 12 was a 26" waist! My waist now is 33", and yet I wear size 12. I've also found that the sizes and measurements on the different shop websites, are also wrong, because going by my waist size, they say a size 12 is too small, and that I should be either 14 or 16, which would be way too big, as apart from my waist, I'm actually quite skinny. (I have a tumour, which is why my belly is big.)

Vole3 · 23/11/2018 16:05

I remember being a 12 in new look and not being able to fit in a principles 16.
Those were the days...........

Mine did that all the time. Then I discovered Weightwatchers ……………….
