Viewers are urging John Lewis to sack their advert team and hire this dude who made a video for just £50

If you don’t cry, do you even have a heart? Sad

God, there's always one, isn't there? Hmm

OP - thanks for sharing the video. It brings a jolt back to reality amongst this consumer madness.

DorothyLNaySayers · 23/11/2018 10:06

Why is poor Chris living by himself? He needs a wife and children and happy busy Christmases.* Someone should marry him immediately and fix that.

*Unless he’s happier being single and childfree, obviously. Or he might be gay, whatever, it’s none of my business. Grin

Blanchedupetitpois · 23/11/2018 10:12

It’s very sweet (though dare I say a bit mawkish?).

Hope the people hungrily calling for people to be sacked because they didn’t happen to like an advert manage to dredge some Christmas spirit up from somewhere in the next few weeks!

JudasPrudy · 23/11/2018 10:12

'He listens to a tape once a year. Hardly dwelling '

Literally the entire video is about him spending the whole month of December dwelling Hmm

senua · 23/11/2018 10:15

This film was made in 2014 so the last tape was "this year" then. It's a different story to still be playing the 2014 tape in 2018 (and 2019 and 2020 and ...)
It also needed some sort of happy ending cos otherwise he looks a bit of a saddo loner (not helped by his bedside reading being Alan TitchmarshConfused )

frogsbreath · 23/11/2018 10:20

It reminded me of guardians of the galaxy with the mums present being a cassette.

It doesn't actually advocate buying anything either. Love is the best gift, love is free. Pianos= £££££

Notso · 23/11/2018 10:21

What is it about Christmas Adverts now needing to be sad and have us all weeping? It's supposed to be a happy time.

Roomba · 23/11/2018 10:24

I KNEW it would be this before I even opened the thread! I have a heart of stone and never cry when I watch stuff, but this did make me well up. Brilliant, the guy who made it is very talented.

viques · 23/11/2018 10:28

So moving, compared to the dreadful JL advert which is made completely without emotion and ignores the fact that EJ was estranged from his mother for many years .........

I don't care if the back story to this is real or not ( though would love it if it was) but he has completely captured the strong need most people who have lost a parent, or two, whether recently or many many years ago, have to take a quiet moment to reflect on their loss and their memories at a time of year when the images of complete happy families are relentless.

cadburysflake · 23/11/2018 10:33

I cried, lots. I never used to be emotional, but then I had children and now I cry at everything!! Well apart from the John Lewis ad, I thought it was rubbish. Christmas ads don't need to be sad, they just have to have a nice sentiment for me.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/11/2018 10:35

Bloody hell 😭😭😭

Avegemitesandwich · 23/11/2018 10:38

What's with the competitive tugging at heartstrings at Christmas these days? It's like who can get the most 'OMG I am literally sobbing' comments on social media wins the prize.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 23/11/2018 10:40

I didn't cry. It hasn't really effected me at all.

But I've spent the vast majority of my Christmas' without my family; so I'm perhaps more aware of the people who also don't have anyone left than most. It's very real for me not to have parents alive; or family gatherings.

Or maybe I'm just cold and horrible; although I hope not!

AutumnGlitterBall · 23/11/2018 10:40

The John Lewis advert might have been better received if it had been a normal person looking back over their musical memories of playing with their family, for their other half, as a teenager and coming back to getting the piano one Christmas.

This little film is lovely. Did bring a tear to my eye as I watch my two year old boy crashing around the living room.

Avegemitesandwich · 23/11/2018 10:42

Yes, it kind of feels like it's exploiting people for whom this scenario is actually real for 'sadness points' or something?

Ifailed · 23/11/2018 10:45

First off, this isn't an xmas ad. If it does remind people that not everyone sees it as a happy time and stops them trying to force compulsory fun down their throats, it's done a job.

SylviaAndSidney · 23/11/2018 10:50

I obviously have a heart like a swinging brick, my dad died a month ago and the video still didn’t make me cry!

Would have loved some tapes though Sad

Notso · 23/11/2018 11:04

I know this isn't an ad but it is being compared to one.
These weepy adverts don't achieve anything apart from creating a load of hype for the brands involved. Maybe they'll flog a big of merchandise and donate a bit to charity but that's not the reason people are buying it.
They are the TV equivalent of those 'awareness' posts people do on Facebook, post a pink heart for breast cancer. Pointless.

mirren3 · 23/11/2018 11:09

I watched it last night and cried, even thinking about it this morning is setting me off. Then I read an article about an abandoned dog which was left tied to a bin, my morning has been a teary mess.

It was filmed in 2014... He just rereleased it. Talented chap the film maker. and I dont think the actor was dwelling on it through December, just ticking off the days on his calendar showing how time passes.

And yes I sobbed. Havent seen the JLewis one as I cant stand Elton. I like the real John Lewis one advertising twitter though.

DiaryofWimpyMum · 23/11/2018 11:20

Nope I didn't cry but I haven't cried once in 6 years! I thought it was sad though.

IntentsAndPorpoises · 23/11/2018 11:21

The first tape in the box was 2005. You wouldn't have recorded on cassette tape in 2005. You'd have struggled to buy new ones. You probably would have done mini disc or an audio file.

Also what is it advertising? There needs to be product placement for it to be an advert

LizzieSiddal · 23/11/2018 11:25

It’s a fantastic film, but I don’t understand why people are saying “sack JL team”. They’d never use a film like that because it’s message is “You don’t need to buy presents”.

SilverySurfer · 23/11/2018 11:28

Did nothing for me and I think that hairstyle is ridiculous.
