A bin is a bin, surely?

I dont see how I am being unreasonable at all, however a friend I spoke to today seems to think I'm out of order.

We have a (general waste) bin collection every other week which is fine. It makes us more conscious about what we do with waste and encourages us to recycle. However last weekend we had a party which generated a lot more rubbish than our single wheelie bin could cope with the bin men will not take anything that is not inside the bin.

So to cut a long story short last night, when everyone put their bins out for a morning collection, I simply distributed my rubbish among my neighbors bins (quite a lot of them are old and have practically empty bins) job done. Trip to the hideous tip avoided.

When I mentioned this to a friend today over coffee she was horrified and seemed to think I was totally out of order.

Granted I probably could have asked first but it didn't occur to me until about 10pm by which time all the houses were in darkness.

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

I get a weekly uplift of general waste because I dispose of ostomy supplies. My neighbours know they can take advantage of this if they have a week where they have extra. Only one has so far, she’s just had a baby so has an abundance of nappies etc to dispose of!

My next door neighbour also uses my gardening waste bin, I don’t use it as we have low maintenance plastic turf (rented so we can’t take it up) and they have nice normal lovely grass so needs cut

Wouldn't bother me but if you'd have knocked on my door at 10pm to ask, that would have bothered me.

I think popping over in the morning to check is a good idea though.

BackforGood · 23/11/2018 13:04

Understandable those in the unusual circumstance of 'paying by weight', but the other people who would be 'furious' and say 'they should ask first' - I don't get it. If I'm sitting down in the evening, I don't really want to have to go and answer the door to a neighbour asking if it would be OK, when, in all honesty I'd never even know if they had added to the rubbish in my bin anyway. I'd obviously be saying 'yes, of course you can', so why disturb me unnecessarily ?

After living in flats and having someone leave a FISH HEAD. In my vegetarian household, non food waste bins... After moving to a house and having next door steal our new bin and replace it with their cracked one... After having someone switch out our recycling bin for theirs with rubbish in it! I am precious about my bins. If you asked me, by all means. But of not, and I needed to dump something in the morning (sometimes forget to empty DD's bin and wait til she's up to do it) it would get massively on my nerves.

IStandWithPosie · 23/11/2018 13:22

As long as it was securely bagged and not going to spill and stink up my bin I wouldn’t mind. I’d prefer you to ask though. Im a bit precious about my bins Grin

I always put my bin out early evening and then add my final bag of rubbish just before going to bed. I once had someone put quite a large bin type thing into my bin and was a bit Confused by it. However, I still had room for my rubbish, so I supposed as long as they haven't filled my bin completely I probably wouldn't mind.

The only problem I can see with this is if there's a major hitch by the rubbish collectors.

Very occasionally, we've had a missed collection and if the weather is really bad, or there's been some other problem the rubbish won't be collected for several days or even until the next collection 2 weeks later.

In these circumstances are you going to go round all your neighbours' bins and take back your rubbish in order to make room for them to use their own bins.

It's the people who put doggy poo bags in my bin that really annoy me

saoirse31 · 23/11/2018 13:31

How come you don't have to pay by weight? Is that not an issue in UK?

TheQueef · 23/11/2018 13:35

Saoirse all the local authorities have different rules so what is perfectly good bin behaviour on one street is a hate crime on the next.

Before I get accused of hyperbole
Three week old toddler nappies and the bin gravy they make ARE a hate crime.

ADastardlyThing · 23/11/2018 13:36

I use my neighbours bin all the time. Not sure if they know, probably not as I put the bins out for them/me at about 6am and put my extra rubbish in and it's collected at 7am

DeadCertain · 23/11/2018 13:40

As long as it's the appropriate rubbish for the bin then no problem.

pigsDOfly · 23/11/2018 13:46

Oh yes, the people who put their dog poo bags in other peoples' bin.

I was on a dog walk walking behind someone who did this. It was the day of the bin collection and the bins had just been emptied. She lifted the lid of a random bin sitting just inside someone's garden and chucked her poo bag in.

My thought was that is was going to sit at the bottom of that bin for two weeks and possibly get squashed under the rubbish and split open smearing dog poo all over some poor bugger's bin (I don't have a lot to think about when I'm on a dog walk). So bloody rude.

SumitosIsMyWall · 23/11/2018 13:54

Like others I'd be annoyed because I know what goes into my black bin is non-recyclable non-composting rubbish. Our council are hot on random inspections, I see them at least once a month either visually checking the inside of the bins/recycling or taking away the bags for inspection with your address labelled on there.

I'd be livid if I was fined for some cheeky arsehole when I conscientiously separate & clean things to be recycled properly.

From the sounds of it you recycle well anyway BMOT but I wouldn't know that if I saw an errant bin bag on top of my rubbish.

greendale17 · 23/11/2018 14:26

**I’d be pissed off because it’s presumptuous.

You might think it’s fine but without checking, how do you know?**

^I agree
