Syndicate lottery win - one for the MN jury

Genuinely asking this on behalf of a friend who doesn't use MN - or even use computers much, come to that

She works in a place where 8 staff are in a lottery syndicate; they pay in a set amount once a month, except that one member constantly "forgets" and has only paid two or three times over the last 2 years

Of course you can guess where this is going: they've won a few tens of thousands and, predictably, the non payer expected a share, insisting he'd make up what he owed in return

The other 7 originally said "no way" but eventually voted 4/3 to give in because the atmosphere was becoming so poisonous - except it's still poisonous because the 3 who voted no are seething

It's all a bit late now since the non-payer's hardly going to return his portion, but anyway I said I'd ask the MN jury ... should they have shared with him or not?

No way!

Sexnotgender · 22/11/2018 19:42

No, the non payer broke the agreement.

Sexnotgender · 22/11/2018 19:43

I was a member of a syndicate and we had a proper contract!

Gunpowder · 22/11/2018 19:43

Maybe if he’d been a faithful payer and forgotten that one week, but only paid a couple of times? Absolutely not.

lifecouldbeadream · 22/11/2018 19:43

No. If they’d not won he’d never have paid what was owed.

RosieStarr · 22/11/2018 19:43

If they weren’t up to date with payments they don’t get anything, simple.

firawla · 22/11/2018 19:45

No way!!! I’d be seething too if I had to give him a share when he hadn’t paid to join in

Fridaydreamer · 22/11/2018 19:45

Nope. Those that voted yes are mugs.

MotorcycleMayhem · 22/11/2018 19:45

National Lottery have a syndicate agreement for just this reason. I signed one in my old job! www.national-lottery.co.uk/games/syndicates

And no, the CF shouldn't have seen a penny.

Ohheyyy · 22/11/2018 19:46

No way. Don't pay then yo h don't play.

TooTrueToBeGood · 22/11/2018 19:46

A regular payer missing a week or two is one thing but an almost never payer not a chance. If they'd had any sense though they'd have kicked him out the syndicate a long time ago and this issue would never have arisen.

doorhandledog · 22/11/2018 19:46

Another absolutely not. What a piss taker! The whole point of gambling is that you pay your stake not knowing if you are going to win! Not waiting till there is a win and then making a backpayment for your punts and expecting to be handed a share of the winnings!

.

Unsure72 · 22/11/2018 19:47

How much would he get if he were to take an eighth of the total? Is it a couple of grand or a life-changing amount?

Mayra1367 · 22/11/2018 19:48

No way !
Only paid a few times during the last few years they were not entitled to any money . Would make an exception if they had just missed the last payment for exceptional circumstances but otherwise NO .

AlexaShutUp · 22/11/2018 19:48

No, if he didn't pay in for the week of the winning ticket, then he wasn't part of the group that won. Consequently, he is not entitled to a share.

AlexaShutUp · 22/11/2018 19:50

Exactly!

Hoopaloop · 22/11/2018 19:50

No way. I would rather have burned 'their' share.

DoYouLikeBasghetti · 22/11/2018 19:52

No way! As gunpowder said, if it was someone who contributed all the time and missed it the one time it mattered, holiday/sickness etc, it would be different.

puzzledlady · 22/11/2018 19:52

Nope. No chance.

DingDongDenny · 22/11/2018 19:52

Did he periodically catch up with payments? or was he more or less 2 years behind? If the later NO WAY

Firesuit · 22/11/2018 19:54

A regular payer missing a week or two is one thing

No, even then they should get nothing. The rules need to be absolutely rigid and understood in advance, it's a recipe for bad feelings if anyone's payout is altered by any grey areas. As the OP said, the lack of clarity has meant there is a problem in this case whatever they decide to do.

theworldistoosmall · 22/11/2018 19:55

Nope, he would be told to get to fuck with his cheeky fuckinshness. You have to be in it to win it, it's that simple.
Put it this way, I forget this week to play the lottery and my numbers are drawn. I cannot then phone them and say look normally I put my money on these numbers, this week I didn't so how do I go about claiming my money. I would be told nicely to get to fuck.

The ones that voted he should get the cash need to give themselves a wobble. If they insist, the money is still split 7 ways and those fools can then split their share with him.

icelollycraving · 22/11/2018 19:58

God how difficult! I’d say no but in honesty I would have cancelled their part of the syndicate a long time ago.

Maelstrop · 22/11/2018 20:00

No, he's a cf!

SerenDippitty · 22/11/2018 20:01

I used to be in a syndicate at work, we paid in by direct debit so there was no question of forgetting! There were 12 of us and we never won more than £100 in 10 years!
