To boycott Aldi

Today I went to Aldi to do my weekly shop. It's my local supermarket and I often shop in there.

However, today I witnessed an incident which I found shocking and upsetting and it has made me think I won't shop there again.

I was walking past the tills with my trolley when I saw a security guard grab a woman as she was about to leave the shop, he didn't speak to her. I instantly thought she must be a shoplifter. He picked her up and carried her across the shop in front of everyone and then slammed her into a wall and pressed his body hard against her. She was screaming that he was hurting her. It looked so brutal and aggressive. She screamed more that he was crushing her ribs. Then he threw her into the staff room and 4 male members of staff bundled in after them. It was really shocking to watch.

I had no idea that security officers are allowed to be this heavy-handed with potential shoplifters.

I waited for the police and told them what I'd seen. They said they would watch the security footage and see for themselves.

If she was shoplifting she was obviously in the wrong, but I don't think she deserved this kind of brutal treatment.

Anyway, even though Aldi is convenient and cheap for me, I've decided to do all my shopping in Tesco now. AIBU?

Report the assault to the police.

I believe the probably saw her on cctv however this is not a reason or an excuse.

NameChanger22 · 22/11/2018 19:39

I can assure you I am not sympathetic to shoplifting. I would report it if I saw it.

A woman was held back by male workers she was screaming at them to stop. She stayed until police came, they didn't take any information from her when I asked, I don't know if the lost it or didn't take her information. I was devastated. I never hurt anyone in my life and ended up the only one with a criminal record over an accident at a till and saving my life from being choked.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/11/2018 19:42

Pretty sure our Aldi doesn't even have security guard and all the staff are very laid back. Someone slipped in the aisle last week and they were very solicitous.

Eilaianne · 22/11/2018 19:42

This isn't quite the same thing but it does pop into my mind when I think "oh that would never happen to me, I don't do anything wrong", but I did once overhear a private conversation between what was obviously two bouncers on public transport a few years ago.
They didn't realise anyone was sitting in the back 4 seater area of the bus higher up (me) and I could hear most of the conversation - they were talking about some of the scuffs they'd had to deal with at work, and they didn't describe anything too alarming in the details.. but they both clearly looked forward to having confrontational exchanges with people trying to get in, when they were turned away. Lots of sniggering about guys sometimes arguing back, they were so aggressive in the way they talked, talked about it reminded management why they were there, the ""puffs" behind the bar needing them to keep "punters in line", it was horrible. They talked about the general public (men) like they were all scumbags with knives! I'd not liked to have been a law abiding male meeting them and them taking a dislike to me, they were looking for reasons to get physical.

I'm not saying all bouncers or security guards are aggressive but it did serve as a small insight into a situation where if I looked a certain way then mg defense of "but I've done nothing wrong" wouldn't have mattered a jot I think.
I'd assumed I'd never be the target for being accused of something by this sort of job holder, because they're there to separate out me from the actual scumbags, ........... Right?

'you really have no idea of the levels shop lifters go to, clearly.'

That's not the point is it. It isn't up to a security man to physically carry an alleged shoplifter across the shop then slam then into a wall Confused.

Coughed · 22/11/2018 19:46

I told nobody it happened, I became quite reclusive after that. It followed being failed by services over DV, then SEND issues with my children, I feel into a huge depression. I don't go out much anymore and I don't report crime there is no point, they are happy to take tax from me and only serve the needs of business and males.

I don't think it has helped much watching the police behaviour over the trans issue.

ChanelPlease · 22/11/2018 19:49

'Really shocked at the amount of people saying it’s fine and a really good thing for a man to beat the shit out of a woman because she might be shoplifting. Wtf??'

TopBitchOfTheWitches works in retail though, so they know its ok you see.

Coughed · 22/11/2018 19:53

It's sad that so many assume that it's OK for men to beat up women and that the woman must be a thief.

They don't want to accept the world we live in, I don't blame them.

LadyGrinch · 22/11/2018 19:56

The other day I was in Aldi and a security guard came up to me and said he was going to put a giant log under my trolley to try and catch the staff out. At first I thought OMG some deranged person has just out a log on my trolley Hmm but it was legit. I went to the checkout and my son said he wasn't comfortable treating her like that so when we got to the checkout I suddenly became a world class ventriloquist and said "there is a log under why trolley". She just rolled her eyes and thanked me.

I am also a bit annoyed that they do not participate in the Food Bank project. Come on. Its the cheapest place around and people can donate a bit. It is also 300 m from our local food bank Angry

Melamin · 22/11/2018 19:57

In Boots, at Euston Station, a tall man took a box with hairstraighteners in and headed quickly and purposefully to the entrance. A shop assistant said very clearly, 'Excuse me, can I help you?' and he gave her the box and walked out. She didn't pick him up and slam him against the wall, or anything.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 22/11/2018 19:57

Chanelplease

What's your issue?

I see this every single day.
Same people day after day.
Most have already been prosecuted.

I think the op has some what told some tall stories regarding this.

But this woman would have been known.

How hard is that to understand? Hmm

sossages · 22/11/2018 19:57

Why are people on here saying it's ok to assualt someone because she might have previously been a shoplifter? Are you seriously advocating vigilante justice for non-violent petty crime, like a fucking supermarket Batman?

Nothininmenoggin · 22/11/2018 19:58

Reading what you have described I very much doubt this happened at all. Read the original post everyone. Can you really see any security guard at any shop not saying a word to anyone then picking them up and slamming them against a wall and then bundle them into a staff room with four staff following. Come on your having a laugh.

imamum21 · 22/11/2018 19:59

if you write to the manager it will be kept in the store, i dont agree with what either of them done but if you feel you need to complain to them then go above the manager and complain to head office about it

jay55 · 22/11/2018 20:02

The security guard is not a magistrate or judge and shouldn't be metering out punishment.

ChanelPlease · 22/11/2018 20:04

'But this woman would have been known. How hard is that to understand? '

Security guards should not pick people up, carry them across the shop and slam them into the wall. 'Known' or not.

How hard is that to understand. Are you a security guard by any chance?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 22/11/2018 20:05

Some people get a tiny bit of power and go crazy with it. We've all met them. I don't think it's unbelievable at all.

Brandnewshit · 22/11/2018 20:09

Coughed, I really don't understand what happened, how did the staff member go off? How many coat hangers are you talking,
I can't quite picture what happened, I'm not saying I don't believe you, but I don't get it?

Coughed · 22/11/2018 20:13

I lifted clothes onto the belt, the book of the hanger accidentally hit the person on the till, who left, went to other staff who told me to leave, I left as instructed then got jumped upon by a man who abandoned trolleys, I got up then the security guard pushed me so my hands were pinned behind me, he leaned his body into me with his arm across my throat.

I was told there was no CCTV the cameras were not facing the right way, we asked the police for footage and were told there was none.

MiniMum97 · 22/11/2018 20:15

That doesn't sound right from the police. They should be taking witness statements if someone has reported a crime. I would follow that up with them and say that you believe the woman was assaulted and you would like to make a formal statement. I would also complain the Aldi head office. The store manager is unlikely to do anything if he wasn't interested when you spoke to him in store.

Shoplifting does not mean assaulting someone is ok.

LagunaBubbles · 22/11/2018 20:20

Coughed how did you go from knocking coat hangers over to biting a security guard? Confused

Bigonesmallone3 · 22/11/2018 20:22

I think that seems a little unreasonable, because u didn't like the look of something u know nothing about.. maybe they have previous with this woman, maybe she's been violent in the past, think ul be shooting your self in the foot by paying more elsewhere and aldi won't miss u..
