Going to Ireland on holiday for Christmas. What sort of Health Insurance do I need?

We're all travelling to Ireland for Christmas to see DH relatives. Ds has asthma and I believe you need to pay for treatment in Ireland. Should we take out travel insurance or is their some sort of EU cover? Don't want to be landed with a massive bill if ds needs treatment or worse still, refused treatment.

Please do not come here on holidays, use our hospitals and bugger off without paying the bill.

On our visit to Wexford General I asked repeatedly if we owed anything. We were categorically told no. We were absolutely willing to pay if necessary. Maybe not all public hospitals operate in the same way?

Though the link above says:

Hospital treatment In an emergency, you can go directly to the Accident and Emergency unit of any public hospital. There is no charge for those eligible under EU regulations.

And

You can contact any GP who is contracted to the Primary Care Reimbursement Services (PCRS) scheme. More than 2,000 doctors, representing the majority of GPs in Ireland, are contracted to the scheme. Treatment is provided free of charge by PCRS doctors to those who are eligible under EU regulations.

Treatment on the public system and any prescriptions are free for UK residents traveling to the UK. You don’t need to show your EHIC card, just something to prove you’re a UK resident (eg driving licence).
