to be worried about my 3.5 week old?

I can hear gas in her belly (rumbling/gurgling like mine dies when I'm hungry). She brings up milk and swallows it again but it seems to hurt her as she cries hysterically for 20 seconds when it happens. She's gone from 3/4 poos a day to 0-1. She's crying a lot more than usual and has crying fits where she pulls her legs to her stomach and screams.

AIBU to worry? Or all sound normal?

You need to get her to the gp right away.

Mammabear31 · 21/11/2018 16:50

Sounds like reflux to me. Have a chat with your health visitor or GP, the poor little mite sounds like she's really suffering.Flowers for you, it must be hard to see her like that.

SprogletsMum · 21/11/2018 16:51

It sounds like reflux with possible cmpa. Definitely take her to the gp.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/11/2018 16:51

I find that healthcare professionals really don't mind seeing little babies, it's always worth getting them checked over. I would definitely get a GP appointment or call 111

KellyW88 · 21/11/2018 18:37

I’d get her checked to be safe. My DD went through a phase of this at 4 months - poops suddenly decreased and she had a lot more reflux and tummy pain... if you can press her lower tummy (gently of course) and it feels hard then she might have constipation or a slight blockage which means reflux will be worse because things aren’t shifting through as they should. Usually GP’s will see a young baby on the same day so it’s worth making the call, if that’s not possible I’m sure your health visitor wouldn’t mind you calling for advice :) hope DD feels better soon!

GiBlues · 21/11/2018 19:01

is she formula fed op?

LoveB · 21/11/2018 19:03

Don't panic reading all the above. I think this is a really normal phase that many babies go through, their digestive systems are changing and it's painful. It does sound like reflux and I would see the GP, but don't worry, you're not alone and she will get over it Flowers I know how horrible it is, we went through it from 4-6 weeks with our DD

EdithBouvier · 21/11/2018 19:05

I know every baby is different but my daughter had this with cow and gate. within a day of changing to aptamil she was like a different much happier settled baby. If she's breast feeding ignore me!

QueQue · 21/11/2018 19:25

What's CMPA? He's breast fed so no formula. We are at docs now. I hope they don't think we are time wasting. I worry too much...

QuantamBaby · 21/11/2018 19:27

You are not time wasting - I always found Drs were happy to see tiny babies. I hope your baby gets better soon x

ImSpeakingFigurativelyOfCourse · 21/11/2018 19:50

CMPA is cows milk protein allergy.
This sounds a bit like DS at this age, he was diagnosed with reflux and prescribed gaviscon. He grew out of it at about 4 months old luckily.

Please don’t worry, with a baby that age you can’t waste the GPs time. Your DD is so important so of course you’re going to worry, and health care professionals would much rather put your mind at rest than have you panicking at home.

Good luck and congrats on DD Flowers

amilosingitor · 21/11/2018 20:11

I have a 3 month old and after going through similar with several admissions to hospital and being told "reflux, reflux, reflux" we went to a different hospital and he had a condition called pyloric stenosis which prevents anything leaving their stomach through to their intestines so they bring it back up. I wish I'd heard of it because once I read up it was obvious that's what was wrong and he had emergency surgery. Worth looking up symptoms just in case x

QueQue · 21/11/2018 20:11

Thanks everyone.

He said he's not worried and gave us baby gaviscon just in case. They're sachets though for bottle milk, but he's breast fed so not sure how we would work that! Only just realised.

Hope he is okay. Still don't feel reassured!

You can mix it into a runny paste with cooled boiled water and feed it to him on a teaspoon just before BFing. DS3 had reflux and was BF, that’s how I did it. Good luck.

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 21/11/2018 20:18

We had gaviscon for my breastfed ds too

Just mix it in a little cooled boiled water. The pharmacy usually has feeding syringe type things, if you can see if he will sip from a small medicine cup

He was a very fussy difficult baby, but took it no problem

Good luck, this stage is hard and exhausting but will pass FlowersCakeCake

SnuggyBuggy · 21/11/2018 20:25

Hope baby feels better soon.

Dmt80 · 21/11/2018 20:54

Sounds like reflux or silent reflux. Gaviscon tends to be the first thing GPs recommend. The gaviscon will turn the milk into a thicker consistency to prevent it coming back up along with stomach acid which is causing the pain. It can however cause constipation - it did with my DS and he was then given ranitidine. I was eventually referred to a pediatrician as my lo wasn't following his growth curve and was prescribed omeprazole. It worked a treat, he was a different baby within a week. He's now 6 months and weaning fine with no dietary issues.

It could also be CMPI (cow's milk intolerance- which they grow out of as their guts mature) instead of CMPA. The only way to rule that out is to cut out dairy from your diet if you bf, monitor any changes and then reintroduce it ( under care of medical professionals of course!). If symptoms worsen then an intolerance is usually confirmed. Hopefully your lo's symptoms will ease with the gaviscon and you won't need the other interventions as I have mentioned. It's horrible to watch them in pain and screaming as you feel so helpless and would do anything to make it better.

LittleOwl153 · 21/11/2018 21:10

See if you can get into some baby massage. My eldest had bad reflux and there were certain massage moves which really helped her.

Mammatron · 21/11/2018 21:23

I had similar with my ds at that age, gaviscon helped but it seemed to improve within a week or two anyway. Also, if you think she's a bit constipated, try doing "bicycle legs" as it can help or put her nappy free on a white sofa.

Stroller15 · 21/11/2018 21:23

Hi OP, it does sound like silent reflux to me too. My ds had it as a baby, I could feel his little tummy rumbling when I held him and he screamed a lot with pulling his legs up. He used to swallow a lot even hours after feeding and smelled acid-y. Like PP has said, try to cut out diary from your diet and see if it makes a difference? My son did well with gaviscon and ranitidine and finally outgrew it, but he might even have had an intolerance. He had mild eczema and even now it gets worse when he drinks a lot of milk. There are a lot of other techniques that all also help, putting his cot at an angle, wearing him in a sling, keeping him upright after feeds etc.

Please don't think you're wasting anyone's time though if you are worried about him. I've never met a doctor or any hcp who wouldn't rather see such a young baby than not.
