To ask if you are a good dancer?

And if so, did you learn or was it something you just ‘knew’ how to do? I mean clubbing/party dancing rather than a particular or formal style.

I’m a shit dancer. I’m so self conscious, I look wooden and forced. I enjoy doing it though so want to learn to be better so the self-consciousness doesn’t ruin it. Any tips?

I'm with G.K. Chesterton. If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.

I don't think my dancing looks good but it feels good. Besides if I find myself dancing in the kitchen, I know that I've managed to rise above all the worries which tend to make me sluggish and inactive. That feels like an achievement, however modest.

Onemorefireball · 21/11/2018 08:12

I have pretty poor rhythm generally actually and I think that's why. If for example there is group clapping along to music, I have to keep watching other people to make sure I'm clapping at the same time as everyone else.

SkippedALightFandango · 21/11/2018 08:13

I’m a fantastic dancer ... when I’m in my kitchen ... on my own lol. When I’m on an actual dance floor not so much 😂. I’m self conscious and need alcohol to help me let myself go

HellsGrandma · 21/11/2018 08:20

I'm a bloody brilliant dancer, the reason for this is I don't give a crap what anyone thinks, [I mean how would I even know] and I love moving to music. I used to only be able to dance after a few drinks but not any more, I get down and funky in public and I love it.

AlphaJuno · 21/11/2018 08:27

Yes I am. I did train in ballet, tap and jazz until i was 18 and passed all my grade exams so I've got a bit of know how when it comes to posture and rhythm. I can pick steps up easily. I sometimes watch dance routines on YouTube and learn them 🙈🤣. Even though I'm not bad as parents go, my daughter still finds me embarrassing 😒.

Babygrey7 · 21/11/2018 08:28

I dance like a stripper, apparently ....

Whether that is good or bad? I guess bad!

I try to tone it down, but it's my wide hips that make me do it Grin

LoopyLou1981 · 21/11/2018 08:31

I’m bloody awful but honestly don’t care! I love a good boogie and at least I give a few people something to smile about! 😂

NewPapaGuinea · 21/11/2018 08:36

The only bad dancers are the ones not dancing.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 21/11/2018 08:36

Usually not but if I've hit the rum I genuinely believe I can dance better than anyone else in the room ..... and I use the whole dance floor ..... friends refuse to buy me rum now Smile

MumDancing · 21/11/2018 09:24

Thanks for the replies all. I loved the Teresa May comment - yes!

I’ve gone through phases where I didn’t care but a couple of friends commented that I dance very wooden and I don’t move my arms enough so those words have stuck with me and it’s what I think about when I dance.

I just wish I could be natural and not care!

mumdancing I have the oppersit problem, I move my arms and hips to much... my legs stay firmly on the floor.... in one spot.....

We could team up n be awesome.Grin

Though I can "slut" drop for the right song

Babygrey7 · 21/11/2018 12:10

The smallthings, what is a slut-drop?
Maybe that's what people mean when they say I dance like a stripper Grin like you I can dance with my feet firmly on the floor

Sort of stripper-meets-90s-clubber style

I avoid dancing in public for the sake of my teenagers....

RatRolyPoly · 21/11/2018 18:16

I'm genuinely a good dancer. I've been a podium dancer and a lap dancer, but before that my genres were rock and metal. These days it's whatever I can get!

It's funny you ask about self-teaching; when I was a young teen I used to put on old motown cds in my bedroom and dance in front of the mirror. I'd be really silly just to test things out and see what my body could do; I'd let rip just to see how it looked in the mirror, and then when something looked good I'd repeat it until I could do it at the drop of a hat.

I did it for hours every day. I probably do have a natural advantage (coming from a family of musicians), but I learnt what to do with that to "Do you love me? (Now that I can dance)" by the Contours.

You go down quick, then "curl" your way up

Can also curl way down slow to

SteveMcGarrettsBudgieSmugglers · 21/11/2018 19:36

no I'm terrible look like a frog in a blender

BadLad · 21/11/2018 21:53

Apparently I look like a ostrich on a hot plate when dancing, so no.

MarcieBluebell · 21/11/2018 21:58

It's one of the only things I'm naturally good at. Wasn't taught just love to dance and been told I'm a good dancer lots.

I think isolation excersises can help.

AlpacaPicnic · 21/11/2018 22:03

I am lucky enough to be old enough now not to give a shiny shit about what I look like on a dance floor! My chances for a dance are few and far between so I grab them with relish.

I've been told I have a naturally good sense of rhythm so that might help but my moves are basically side step, side step, hip wiggle butt shake, twirl a bit, rock arms around and repeat!

Sallystyle · 21/11/2018 22:11

I am awful. I have no rhythm and my family find it very funny when I dance (it is good natured).

It never stops me though. I enjoy it and that is all that matters.

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 21/11/2018 22:13

I think I'm a great dancer!Grin but someone actually took the piss out of my best moved at a 70th birthday party last weekend. Outrageous.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 21/11/2018 22:14

I was really good. I have a great sense of rhythm and absolutely loved dancing. Going out and spending 6/7/8 hours dancing the night away used to sooth my soul.
But since having kids I've completely lost it and actually caught sight of myself Mum Dancing the other day. Mortifying. I think my body has changed a lot since having babies and it just doesn't move the way it used to. It's really gutting.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 21/11/2018 22:16

I have to have had a few drinks or I feel really self-conscious. Which is absolutely stupid, because I dance ballroom and Latin competitively and really enjoy ceilidhs and swing dancing. I think I'm just better when I have somebody to hold hands with!

OHolyNightOwl · 21/11/2018 22:21

I am great for parties as I am always the first one up to dance! Have rhythm and love dancing, but am not a fantastic dancer by any means. H is the same, for him the cheesier the better though. When Steps comes on at a wedding, he puts a straw behind the ear like a headset and does a whole routine. Ahahaha

YolandiFuckinVisser · 21/11/2018 22:23

I can do moshing and pogoing, can't dance to anything non-thrashy. My DS is a talented breakdancer and skilled at popping and locking. If I want to embarrass DD in front of her friends I can do a truly dreadful popping routine.

I quite enjoy a dance after a drink though so I do it anyway.

3littlemonkeys82 · 21/11/2018 22:28

I'm positively shakira like with my dance moves 😂
