I’m on maternity leave and we are skint. DH and I have set a nominal limit for gifts for each other and DS will be getting essentials like socks, vests and a few little bits in his stocking (he’ll be 3 months old so doesn’t need anything really anyway and grandparents will undoubtedly go mad gift-buying) which I’m going to knit. We’re going to buy small, thoughtful gifts for DNeice and DNephew. This just leaves DH’s sisters, my DBro and our parents.

We’ve got some sloe gin on the go so they’ll all get a bottle of that but I wanted to do something special from DS as it’s his first Christmas and maybe a few easy edible bits too?

So wise ladies (and occasional gentlemen) of Mumsnet, hit me with your cheap non-shit homemade gift suggestions! Especially if you have suggestions regarding baby-related gifts that won’t go straight in the bin! Are hand and footprint mugs/plates as fiddly (and naff) as I think they might end up being?

Cork reindeer.

Bonus - you also get to drink loads of wine.

A crepe paper flower in a nice vase is lovely. Lia Griffith.com has some great templates.

I think handprint mugs etc are naff outside of grandparents/godparents. If I didn't have a vested interest in the child in question I might think "hmmmm, bit cheap."

What about sweets? Sugar/cream/ vanilla doesn't cost much and wrapped in twists of baking parchment looks rustic.

Brown sugar, coconut oil and lime juice in a Kilner jar makes a great body scrub.

Sew felt ornaments or make a garland of e.g felt gingerbread people on some ribbon?

Simple jewellery like semi precious beads on chains or earring hooks looks cool. You can repurpose old jewellery or buy from charity shops.

Sewing simple tote bags or make up bags? Loads of tutorials on YouTube. Can use old scraps/clothes/ recycled zips and sequins.

Make simple wax candles in old cups/jars?

I love a craft, me. Grin

Home made bath salts in a nice jar. If you wanted, you could make labels featuring DS's hand prints or something.

Here's a peony I made. Takes about half an hour.

Do you have any nice photos of your relatives with their nephew/grandchild? You could just get small copies and frame them as a gift. I so rarely print out photos now that getting one that's easy to display straight away is a treat!

I think footprint mugs / baubles etc are really cute. He will be too small to do handprints at that age. However I would recommend going to a proper place to do it if you can, as it is harder than it looks and by the time you buy the proper paints etc you might as well go somewhere official.

We did small hanging hearts with her footprints on for Dads first Christmas. They were £5.99 each including the woman helping us, writing "DDs first christmas" in nice writing on each, glaze and fire.

Also like the idea of a photo frame with nice picture. If you can find a picture of recipient with baby they would be more personal and that's always nice.

Thanks all, some great ideas!

Canyon that peony looks great! I bet I could manage some of those for the Grandmas!
