To give second hand Christmas presents?

ashley444 · 20/11/2018 15:00

My friends little boy is 7.
I asked my friend what he would like from me for Christmas.
She said she was buying him a Nintendo DS and I could buy him a game.
I sent a few over from Argos and asked which he would prefer.
She said I should go to a second hand games shop and I could get him them for half the price.
Here is the thing ...I'm not sure how I feel as it will be second hand, now I buy lots of DVD's for myself out of there but because it's for a Xmas prezzie I'm unsure.
What do you guys think?

if she has suggested second hand then I definitely would.

rhnireland · 20/11/2018 15:01

if she's suggested it I would follow her lead.

Pollaidh · 20/11/2018 15:29

Absolutely. Better for the environment too - all the fabrication waste, avoiding rubbish, additional plastics etc.

I found the perfect gift for my nephew, second hand, and I think my DC are getting second hand too from some people.

One of the best gifts for a child is a healthy planet.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 20/11/2018 15:30

I would never do second hand for a present.

An everyday sort of gift, maybe, but not a present.

Lollypop701 · 20/11/2018 15:32

Get him 2 from charity shop!

popcornwizard · 20/11/2018 15:32

Hell yes, or pay an extortionate price from some celllophane

popcornwizard · 20/11/2018 15:33

Yes do it, not yes YABU

LadyFuchsiaGroan · 20/11/2018 15:33

I bought my dd second hand games for her ds. I fail to see how being wrapped on cellophane makes any difference for a game. Check out music magpie for ds games, free delivery and some good prices for second hand games.

MiddlingMum · 20/11/2018 15:34

Secondhand is always preferred over new in our house.

Hadalifeonce · 20/11/2018 15:34

We have done 2nd hand for DNephew ,he gets a much better present than we could normally afford, and at 7 doesn't know the difference.

Sweetheart · 20/11/2018 15:35

It's pretty common place with games and seeing as she suggested it I think it's fine. We have actually got ds a 2nd hand plays station for his xmas present because to be frank - buying it brand new costs a bloody fotrune!

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:36

It's not like giving him a beaten up old football. The game experience will be in anyway diminished by someone else having previously owned it.

If I was a gaming boy I'd definitely value 3 secondhand games over 1 new one.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:36

*won't be in any way diminished

torthecatlady · 20/11/2018 15:37

I would definitely do that, plus something to go with it like a magazine or bar of chocolate as a game wrapped up doesn't always seem like much.

AvoidingDM · 20/11/2018 15:38

I'd feel funny about it.

I don't mind second hand things, I have the odd gumtree / charity shop item, but I'd feel funny about 2nd hand gifts esp if its not a financial decision.

Some kids who end up with tons of second hand stuff might start to feel they aren't worth new things.

teatwosugarspls · 20/11/2018 15:40

If she's suggested it then I would, shes obviously fine with him receiving it x

PottyPotterer · 20/11/2018 15:42

Absolutely fine. DS often gets second hand books/toys from his older cousin, likewise I usually put some used books or toys of ds's in with his younger cousins presents. Don't get the obsession with everything having to be brand spanking new, it's just wasteful.

MoaningSickness · 20/11/2018 15:45

The strange obsession with things being better if the are 'new' is killing the planet.

I would be iffy about giving a second hand present to someone if I knew they were snooty about these things, but here you've been asked to!

MoaningSickness · 20/11/2018 15:48

feel they aren't worth new things.

Only if they've been bought up with a fucked up value system that says new things are magically better.

RickOShay · 20/11/2018 15:48

I prefer second hand for a lot of things. I have bought Ds2 a second hand snakes and ladders board for Christmas, and I am about to trawl ebay yet again Smile

Camomila · 20/11/2018 15:50

Both of DSs Christmas presents are 2nd hand...he is too young to care and I feel better about the planet.

I can see DC getting upset if they only ever get 2nd hand but I think a mix of old and new is definitely better than all new things.

Knitwit101 · 20/11/2018 15:50

My kids Christmas presents are almost entirely second hand this year. Making new things is killing our planet and we just don't seem to be able to stop.

CheshireChat · 20/11/2018 15:52

The mum suggested it so absolutely- you might even be able to pick up two for about the same amount so definitely try.

I'm still hoping I'll get the new Paw Patrol game for DS from somewhere like Game so we don't pay £30 for it.

ChocolateTearDrops · 20/11/2018 15:53

Second hand DS games aren't seen as"second hand" like an item of clothing is second hand. No problem.

Cokezeroisyummy · 20/11/2018 15:53

If she suggested it I don't see why not!
