Dog poo left in plastic bags in the street / park

I used to think it was people who meant to collect it later and lost an occasional one, but there seems to be an epidemic of leaving poo in pags. Surely lifting the poo up in the bag is the unpleasant part (warm, squishy and smelly). After that, why not just take it to a bin? Keep a spare carrier bag in a rucksack for transport if you want your hands free. Obviously leaving poo lying around in bags is unreasonable and dog poo just left behind would biodegrade quicker, particularly in the park, so surely it's better to just leave the poo than bag it and leave the bag? Does anybody understand the motivations behind leaving the poo in bags?

Some people do take their bagged dog poo home and put it in their own bin if there isn't a dog poo bin around. I do.

I feel like I'm going to just be looking all the time for who's doing them now. I think it's better to photograph or video them and send it to the police for hopefully prosecution rather than speak to them, before I do that is it legal to covertly record someone in the street for that purpose?

For some reason they have taken the bins from most of our fields and parks round here. People throw their bagged dog shit on the floor where the bins were

Whilst we are at it, lets make horse owners pick up their shite. It may well be fine in a country environment but we also have horses traversing urban environments. They drop a load on the road and just trot on.

This debate arises every few months on here. I can't be bothered to yet again explain how tricky it would be to do this and how totally impossible it is to get to where we can safely ride without using parts of a public road/path so I'll let you have a little search for previous threads. :)

As an owner of multiple dogs, I'm very careful to pick up after them. If there are no bins nearby, the handle of the poo bag gets tucked under the windscreen wiper. It stinks, even with the windows closed!

There are very few dog poo bins where I usually walk so I have a rucksack i use just for my walks. Treats, poo bags and a carrier bag to put the poo in, then it goes on the front pocket. It keeps my hands free and it's no hassle.

You have a dog, you pick up poo. Every time.

I litter pick as a volunteer in our local woodland and 80% of what I pick up is bagged poo. I say pick up, but often it’s a case of harvesting the fruits of the Poo Trees. Sometimes they are flung so high we have to shake them loose or batter them down with sticks like some bizarre fairground challenge.

Mind you the remaining 20% isn’t nice either. Booze bottles and cans, condoms, and dirty nappies Sad

@Maelstrop I am not a horse owner so correct me if I am wrong but can't you get bags for catching horse poo? I have it in my mind that the horses that are all tackled up for horse and carts have one on?

Damon Green of ITV had a picture of a sign erected by a fed-up farmer:

It's litter, there are penalties for dropping letter. If councils enforced the penalty a few times people might come to their senses.

I always pick up my dogs poo - except in Stick n Flick areas - Which are prevelant where I live. For those who don't live in rural areas, it is common for land owners to ask animal owners to flick their dogs shit into the undergrowth, where it will break down, naturally, rather than bag it and hang it from trees - as seems the norm for other areas 🤷

What about cats shit? Cat owners take no responsibility for their cats mess. Who should Pick that up? Do people have cats just because they don't have to pick up their shit?

starzig · 25/11/2018 23:41

I don't think they should be peeing or pooing on public areas at all. If the person were to do that there would be outrage and dogs carry more disease. If you want yo own a dog they should be going on your own property.

Well, in fairness to all the dogs I have owned they have crapped in the garden first thing in the morning and last thing, before bed. Dogs pee throughout the day, just like everyone else. So if an owner is out all day, with their dog, how do you think they can prevent their dog from peeing?

What about cat owners? Should they be more Pro-active in cleaning up their pets - that they chose to own - shit?!

MissesBloom · 26/11/2018 00:18

No one ever mentions cats. Their shit absolutely stinks, and they climb over my fence into my back garden and do it on my lawn. Cant tell you how many times my dcs have run into the garden and gotten cat poo on their shoes. Wish cat owners would also take more responsibility. They can hunt birds, spread their poo around and make general pests of themselves because they're semi domestic.

As for the dog poo, I think they're lazy. Dont want to carry a steamy bag of poo. Councils are taking poo bins away and rather than take the poo home, so they dump it. Its gross and they should be fined. Most dog owners don't behave this way though, they're let down by a select few who are entitled.

Also it's not possible to really control when a dog poos. Some go like clockwork at a set time every day but many dont. Or they could have an upset stomach and need to go desperately. You can't really communicate to them to hold it in!
