People who should learn to cop on

PoliticalBiscuit · 19/11/2018 09:09

Please add your own Brew

People who give their address (on Facebook buying pages etc) as

"It's number 13 on the Hurst, behind the bins that are next to the old oak tree."

How the fuck am I going to put that in Google Maps?

OP posts:
jimmyhill · 19/11/2018 09:16

13, the Hurst, town - at a guess

Shirleyphallus · 19/11/2018 09:17

What does cop on mean?

drquin · 19/11/2018 09:21

Well I guess they're assuming that if it's a local FB selling page, you're familiar enough with the area. Maybe not though.

Conversely, one of my local FB selling pages has removed the restriction that you must live in our town to sell ...... meaning there's now dozens of "needs gone today" posts for collection only in a town 50 miles away ...... 100-mile round-trip to collect a £2.50 item ..... cop on 😂

ScouseQueen · 19/11/2018 09:25

Cop on = work out the situation (that they're being stupid and annoying)

MereDintofPandiculation · 19/11/2018 10:41

In all the time I have lived here, only one person has managed to find the house via satnav. Everyone else, from friends to delivery drivers, has had to be conned in from a nearby street using the sort of description you're objecting to.

Usernumbers1234 · 19/11/2018 10:44

No, but people who say cop on should probably do some learning.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 10:46

What's wrong with using the phrase 'cop on', now? Confused

AfterSchoolWorry · 19/11/2018 11:23

Cop on to yourself= use your brain.

minisoksmakehardwork · 19/11/2018 12:24

In keeping with the Facebook selling theme...

"Does it work ok?"
"What's your best offer?"
"Can you deliver?"

Seriously? I've posted a condenser dryer, spares or repair for £20. Wtf do you expect. I clearly detailed in the information that it heated up fine but needed a new belt for the drum. I only put it on to save it going to landfill as someone who could repair it would get a very good drier for cheap.

I ended up editing the listing to reflect needs new belt in the title. Then capitalised that sentence in the listing and still got asked the same questions. Replied to everyone to ask them to read the listing.

Even had one bloke turn up to collect, then asked if it worked! Think he was a bit put out when dh said no and asked if he had read the sale post.

Shopgirl1 · 19/11/2018 12:29

Isn’t “cop on” Irish slang? Is it actually used in England, Scotland or Wales?

Shopgirl1 · 19/11/2018 12:30

It means -“get a grip” “stop being stupid”

ethelfleda · 19/11/2018 12:30

Are you Irish, OP?

PoliticalBiscuit · 19/11/2018 12:36

I had no idea it was obscure slang! My Dad is Irish, I don't use it all that often but it is a wonderful phrase! A good alternative is "wise up"

@minisoksmakehardwork - definitely frustrating!

OP posts:
PoliticalBiscuit · 19/11/2018 12:37

Other people who need to cop on (wise up) - clothes designers making loads of bloody crop tops. It's winter and I want to eat mince pies. Ok?

OP posts:
SlippedMyIdiom · 19/11/2018 12:52

I want clothing companies to cop on to the fact that many women have a cup size above a B and should therefore make some clothing accordingly! I haven't been able to buy new clothes I like for 3 years or more!

As an English woman, I know what 'cop on' means. I wonder if it's regionalHmm

Bouchie · 19/11/2018 12:55

we use cop on all the time up in the North West. Great phrase.

minisoksmakehardwork · 19/11/2018 13:00

Drove me ducking nuts for a week. Was only the fact that I couldn't get to the tip when it was open which stopped me taking a hammer to it and buggering it completely.

I wouldn't have said it's obscure. 'Cop yerself on' is heard a lot where we are (east) Well, one of the vastly more polite terms anyway.

Also;
People who put their bins out on the road to stop people parking in front of their house/blocking their car in when they've a) no dropped curb and b) there's no parking restrictions but they live near the railway station. I get it. It's irritating. But you still can't moan when you're bins are moved by someone who wants to park.

PositivelyPERF · 19/11/2018 13:00

I think posters that appear offended by a phrase they don’t recognise, need to cop on. 😉

minisoksmakehardwork · 19/11/2018 15:55

@PositivelyPERF 😆😆😆😆

PoliticalBiscuit · 19/11/2018 16:51

Plastic paddy here (Irish parents). Will you just cop the fuck on. Wonderful phrase.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 17:14

It's an Irish phrase but I also know a lot of cockneys who use it too

Anyway, to add mine to the thread....

I wish people would cop on more to internet begging threads, especially at this time of year. They regularly appear just before Christmas, on chat forums and Facebook.

If they want to blindly give money/gifts/anything to the person in question, that's their decision.

But if they 'copped on' and did it privately instead of announcing it, or typing "Check your PMs/inbox', it'd appear a lot less lucrative to all the other scammers who come out of the woodwork at this time of year.

Shopgirl1 · 19/11/2018 19:58

Who is offended? Would you ever cop yourself on....

saturdaynightgin · 19/11/2018 20:32

We use cop OFF in my area in South Wales.. means to get off with/pull someone Grin

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2018 20:40

I haven't heard 'cop off' for years saturdaynightgin Grin

Or 'cop a feel' of someone Blush
