To think no one ever 'finishes' doing 'up' their house?

Boring thread alert but...

I don't think ive ever met anyone (thats not renting), that's ever finished decorating/renovating their home. Theres always a new carpet that needs fitted, a wall that needs painting or extension building.

Has anyone on here actually fully finished their house and fully satisfied with it?

I'm in the process of decorating but once the spare rooms done then thats it. I hope to not have to do a thing for a good few years. Or is this a pipe dream?

By the time you've finished you probably want a change about - not a full redecoration, but maybe change of cushions, pictures, display etc.

BunnyandBee · 18/11/2018 20:08

We bought a project, I would say the main stuff is done (all but replacing the bathroom) however the list of finishing touches and little jobs is endless. By the time we finish them other bits of the house will require a bit of maintenance and updating and so the cycle goes on.
I think even in the none-'project' houses it is a cycle. Some people may just settle with what they have, stop noticing or don't care after a while I suppose. If none of the former apply I don't believe you're ever 'done' Grin

Lymphy · 18/11/2018 20:09

I've got three rooms left to do. I highly suspect by the time I've done them I'll be ready to re do the first one we did! I think it depends on the house tbh ours is old victorian style we found many issues after moving in. I wish we'd got a new build but there again I know many in new builds that have had huge issues.

BirdieInTheHand · 18/11/2018 20:10

As soon as I finish we move - I like a project Grin

WishfulSprouts · 18/11/2018 20:11

We’ve done 2 renovations that were basically finished one took 6 years one took 18 months now live in a newbuild 😂

Chrisinthemorning · 18/11/2018 20:14

We have just finished inside. However, it wasn’t in need of lots of doing up anyway, just a bit. In the past 2 years we have replaced all the windows and external doors, had 2 new bathrooms, redecorated most rooms (only study, spare bedroom and playroom not done but were done in 2012), new carpets and just ordered new sofas. I am happy with inside now.
Next year we need to have the patio/ paths relaid and repointed.

CMOTDibbler · 18/11/2018 20:16

We are. We moved in here and redid the bathrooms, all the flooring, redecorated throughout, and remodelled the garden. Then it was fully done up, and you are then just into the periodic repainting each room every 3-5 years, longer for spare rooms

Kpo58 · 18/11/2018 20:16

I live in a house that is fully furnished and needs nothing doing to it. Am I happy? No as it's tiny and un-exspandable.

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 18/11/2018 20:17

I think some people focus on fixing things like a house because they're incapable of fixing their lives in general.

Others maybe are just the type that can never be really happy with anything, there's always something that could be better in their eyes.

greendale17 · 18/11/2018 20:18

I did. Everything finished, nothing to so

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 18/11/2018 20:19

Just going to have a little cry quietly.

AnoukSpirit · 18/11/2018 20:21

Mine is finished and I never want to have to repeat it! I don't see myself wanting to change my colour scheme so most likely it will just be a case of refreshing the paint at some point not too soon hopefully (and carpets etc eventually).

I love my home though, I'm just not keen to repeat all the work that went into it!

MissCalamity · 18/11/2018 20:23

Been in our current house 7 years. All upstairs rooms bar the en-suite have been decorated & a new bathroom suite since we moved in.
The downstairs needs a complete overhaul, it's very beige & brown! Kitchen needs painting as the units are completely fine & modern!
The conservatory needs new blinds (All falling down!) and an update, but it's the kids playroom so until the kids no longer need toys, (probably 8 years or so) it will stay like that, then I'm guessing the bedrooms will need updating again, so the cycle continues! Grin

theycallmebabydriver · 18/11/2018 20:25

I bought a project 5 years ago abs we're just coming to the end of the last major bit. Then we start again on the bits I did 5 years ago that now need refreshing. Hoping at sone point next year all of it will be good enough to sell and the cycle will begin again in our next house.

ForalltheSaints · 18/11/2018 20:26

OP I agree, just having finished doing up the hall!

SweetSummerchild · 18/11/2018 20:28

Yes, our house is finished.

En suite fitted
Horrid fireplace replaced
Extension done
Garden done (including dodgy brick wall)
Kitchen/diner redone
Redecorated
Exterior woodwork done

The lawn is still a bit patchy after the dry spell this summer but that can wait until spring.

It has taken 16 years.

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 18/11/2018 20:28

I think it’s just that houses need maintenance, and things always need to be looked after or fixed.

So you’ve done your kitchen and your bathroom, but the next year your driveway needs sealing and your gutters replacing. Then your grass all dies so you have to re-turf. Then your skirting boards are scuffed and your dishwasher blows up. Then it’s five years on and all your kids have grown out of their bedroom decor so need to redecorate.. By which point the carpets are looking shabby. And so on.

I think anyway who’s only lived in a new house won’t appreciate this. Yet......

whosaidthat6 · 18/11/2018 20:29

Ha. Just thought that today. The wife wanted a vanity unit in the downstairs loo which turned into a tiling job when the plaster board came off with the tiles, which turned into replacing the loo seat, handle, the decoration.

Now I've painted the doorframe, the hall side looks yellow, so now that needs doing. Basically, it never ends.

Of all the threads you'd think someone couldn't be bitter and nasty about, you'd think this was it wouldn't you, but nope, right away someone comes along and proves you wrong.

Hassled · 18/11/2018 20:33

No way. When we bought our house it hadn't been touched for 25 years - by the time we'd redecorated every room and sorted the roof, the flooring, the kitchen, the bathroom, moved an internal wall to create a bedroom out of a box-room, etc etc while raising 4 kids everything we'd originally painted when we started however many years ago needed repainting. It's always a work in progress.

Calmingvibrations · 18/11/2018 20:33

I thought it was just me.

Grin Grin Grin some people really cannot help themselves.

Echobelly · 18/11/2018 20:38

Oh God, ours is going to be like the bloody Forth Bridge! Been here 3 years, done big rebuild so kitchen and lounge are complete. Just finishing the hallways (a massive task but so important to make the house feel like ours, and also to brighten up the spaces, which were very dark and narrow-feeling before we redecorated).

The front room is still a junk room, partly because of the hallway redecoration, but if we clear it out, replace the horrible 'pub' carpet and put in new light (probably next on the list as a quick win) then it'll finally be a proper room.

Kids' bedrooms will probably have to wait a while. DD's room dominated by overly-large built-in wardrobes, so there's not way of decorating it a bit at a time - cupboards has to be torn out and replaced before carpet can be done and all the walls will need doing at the same time.

And somewhere in this, if we get the money, we want to extend into the loft. Oh dear.

user1471426142 · 18/11/2018 20:39

Technically we don’t really have to do anything to ours as it is furnished adequately and in a reasonable state although there are some maintance jobs that need doing. However, the list of jobs I want to do is massive. I just don’t have the money or time to do them at the moment. I also have a list of things I’d do if I one the lottery. My bathroom for example is fine but in an ideal world, I’d have a slightly different configuration and colour scheme- I just couldn’t justify ripping it out at the moment. In 10 years time it would be easier to justify.

Ooplesandbanoonoos · 18/11/2018 20:42

Every time i want a room decorated/:DIY done etc i promise DH that once its done i wont want anything else done....but then always think of something...
