To ask whether Sodastream is any good these days?

In an effort to reduce plastic usage, we're thinking of getting a Sodastream, mainly to make sparkling water.
Does the sparkling water taste OK and what are the syrups like - I recall them being rather disgusting when I was a kid, especially the Cola one.

Any insight would be good as they're quite expensive and will take up worktop space.

flighthelp - Sodasstream is headquartered in Lod, which is in Israel, and inside the Green line. Of course, if you think the whole of Israel is occupied, then Lod is as well, but you should at least be open about it.

Is there any noticeable difference between the fizzy water produced by a Sodastream and that which you buy in the shops? I can't stand the stuff myself but DP has been buying loads of small bottles of fizzy water recently and this thread has given me the idea to buy him a Sodastream for Christmas and thus reduce the bottles bought. But it would only work if the outcome is the same.

I found that no matter how many charges I did )the carbonating switch) I didn’t ever get ‘buxton’ type bubbles but got more fizzy smaller ‘badoit type bubbles’. The water used also tastes the end product so depending on how delicious or otherwise your tap/filtered water is it may taste different to ‘mineral water’. My London rainwater , filtered, didn’t tast great. Better when refrigerated.

Tap water not rain water - it’s not got that bad here yet !

No. You can (to some degree) control the amount of fizz with a soda stream, so he can tailor it to his taste.

As displaced 1967 refugees who has no right of return I do believe that it is all occupied. I don't feel the need to hide that at all. It certainly doesn't make me anti-Semitic either.

Pennina I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your post.
Will not reply again as I don't want to derail the thread.

OrangeJellySpread · 19/11/2018 10:01

It shouldn't have been derailed in the first place.

shallichangemyname · 19/11/2018 10:01

Heron do you shop in Waitrose? Their artisanal bread would go superbly with your carbonated filtered rainwater Grin

sundaymorningatwork · 19/11/2018 10:14

flighthelpneeded - I think you need to do a little research... I am 100% against the occupation, but thinking that the whole of Israel is 'occupied' is a pretty extreme view. Where should the Israelis (millions of whom were expelled from Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq and Iran prior to the establishment of Israel) go? Also, Pennina's summary is quite accurate. Israel has a lot of problems, but its worth remembering that despite the discrimination, it is a place where an Arab member of the Supreme Court upheld a prison sentence for a former prime minister.

Flight - and who mentioned anti-semitism? I certainly didn't. It's a bit like those people who say "I'm not racist, but....."

HeronLanyon · 19/11/2018 10:52

shallichangemyname you have made me lol again ! (Now feverishly drawing up business plan for filtered rainwater syrup or similar).

AdobeWanKenobi · 19/11/2018 11:05

i've found The Range best for SS Canisters, and often a quid or two cheaper than Argos. They also do the bottles and syrups.

Someone upthread mentioned Juice. In an attempt to recreate fizzy orange I did try and fizz pure orange. It did not end well and the kitchen ceiling still bears the scars.

unicornpoopoop · 19/11/2018 11:57

Boots are currently selling one for £40 down from £100. I am put off by the fact it says it's only for water though

AdobeWanKenobi · 19/11/2018 15:11

@unicornpoopoop if you are thinking of using the syrups they go in after the fizz anyway. Same with juices, you add them after fizzing the water.

If you're thinking wine, then none of them will say they are suitable but I think everyone does it anyway.

unicornpoopoop · 20/11/2018 07:02

Adobe - I wanted 100% fizzy juice - not watered down. Bit like the appletizer drinks.

AdobeWanKenobi · 20/11/2018 11:22

Thats what I was trying to achieve fizzing pure orange. It exploded. 😂
