Hi...I am a reasonably active 81 year old, I love makeup and clothes, but I am overweight.....and I really would like to do something it , having a back problem, walking is diffucult, can any Mumnetsubscriber suggest what I can do, I don’t eat a great deal, and I know I am sedentary because of the problem with my back. I still work as a professional lampshade maker, and I love it..but it doesn’t help with the weight problem. Help!

I didn't want to read and run, but I have no idea what is suitable for you.
But professional lampshade maker ! Wow !

Also can’t advise but I discovered this week that 75% of over 45 year olds are overweight or obese. So you are in good company.

My mum (aged 67) was diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic 6 months ago. She has just got her BMI below 25 so is now in the “slimmest quarter” for her age. Am looking forward to telling her that when I call her tomorrow.

Energy consumed versus energy expended. Work out how much energy you expend and then work out how much you can eat and drink,
Exercise wise try aqua aerobics

There are several older ladies at my tai chi class it can even be done sitting down and is really good gentle exercise.

After a certain age women are suppose to be slightly overweight (BMI) to help prevent hip fractures (the number 1 cause of mortality and morbidity) so speak to your family dr.
Maybe request a referral to an NHS dietician.

Can you swim? A lot of older people benefit from it; it keeps your joints supple without unnecessary strain.

If your weight is affecting your mobility, you should ask for help at your GP practice. Is your back pain likely to get better? Sympathy to you, it is hard to stay at a healthy weight when you can't exercise much.

Cut back on your caloric intake and only eat natural, nutrient dense food. Get hand weights and do lots of exercise sitting down. Go to your gp and ask for advise and for any support programs available to you.

Seated exercise classes, seated yoga and Pilates will all help with your back and help your balance. Also, table tennis (great fun!) and belly dancing are great exercise- once you feel stronger when walking.

It's hard to get started at the begining but the difference we see it making to people Is incredible. Plus you'll make new friends and have a great time in the process. Do see your gp first though just to get the all clear before start.

Good luck! You can do it! I work somewhere that offers these classes and once you get started you'll really enjoy it.
