Hi, I’m new here and looking for you wise ladies advice.
My 3 year olds behaviour is starting to give my husband and I cause for concern. To honest I have thought there has been something more to it for at least a year but was thinking he would Maybe outgrow it.
This may be long so please bear with me. Here are some examples

  • sensory issues are he hates labels on his clothes and says they hurt. Gets really distressed. Haircuts are a nightmare as again they hurt. Foods that are particularly crumby like toast he says the crumbs hurt when they touch his skin. He also has poo issues where he will gag every time he goes sometimes to the point of vomiting.
I have been to the gp about these and he said it was just a phase.
  • behaviourally he hits, throws, kicks etc in frustration mostly at me
  • he isn’t good at listening and I could say the same thing over and over again and he hears it but doesn’t seem to retain the information
  • he has no awareness of danger , ie roads we cross roads every day to take my eldest to school and each time he goes to cross without looking. He won’t hold my hand and just runs or jumps every where never walks.
  • he talks relentlessly- and you have to repeat back every sentence to him word for word before he will move on.
  • his play his repetitive , everything in lines and only plays with Thomas toys never anything else and can’t seem to hold concentration for any length of time to do an activity.
His is such a loving and affection little boy and is so full of fun and life, truly a big character but his needs and behaviour are ruling our family life and I think I need some help. I plan to call the HV next week. Just looking for some advice in the mean time x thank you for reading x

There are quite a few flags in there but you need a proper assessment. Maybe start by taking the mchat online and seeing what you get for results?

RedHelenB · 17/11/2018 22:00

3 year olds have no concept of danger so he will need to be restrained near roads. Likewise, not seemingly being good at listening. Definitely seek your HV advice though,

Does he go to Nursery?

heather1 · 17/11/2018 22:05

My now 14 year old very similar with labels and clothes. He used to say that wearing jeans was painful.
Cut all labels off - as close to the fabric as possible. My now still much prefers soft fabrics like jogging bottoms. And he loved soft textures - faux fur.
Maybe look into getting him a weighted blanket. My son loved this. I think the feeling is pressure is reassuring.
Keep hair cuts few and far between. We used to go to a child friendly one or watch a film while it was on as a distraction.
Don’t let them fob you off. Your his mum and know and love him the most. Mum instincts are usually correct In my experience

Thank you so much for your replies. Yes he does go to nursery and I had a brief parents evening recently and the teacher wasn’t aware of anything other than he struggles to sit still and listen at carpet time but I would like more time to discuss this with the teacher so will make an appointment this week. He only started in September and is the youngest in his class so I wonder if they have had enough one on one time to spend with him to see his differences.

Sorry but what is mchat? I have never heard of this?

The mchat is an assessment for autism in toddlers/preschoolers. You can do it yourself online. It's a starting point rather than a diagnostic tool.

3 is too old for the m-chat

PenguinSaidEverything · 17/11/2018 22:45

It could be something, it could be nothing. Really hard to tell at this age. Definitely have a chat with health professionals to get a second opinion but don’t panic.

danni0509 · 17/11/2018 22:47

Redhelenb some 3 year olds do have concept of danger I know several that do, or have an awareness to some extent.

Slidingdoors1988 · 17/11/2018 22:54

Yes my daughter who is now six always listened when I explained road safety and adhered to rules of holding hands to cross that we must look etc

I'd meet with the HV and follow up with a GP appointment with everything on your list, plus keep checking in with nursery every now and again. You are doing the right thing to ask questions rather than put it off any more if you are concerned.

I have 3 NT kids and think it's unusual for a 3 year old to always listen and hold hands. One of mine did this but the other 2 (and other 3yo I know) no chance.

My oldest is NT but finds clothes labels painful. He's 17 and still cuts them all out which is how I identify his clothes after a wash.
