To wrap turkey tightly in foil while cooking?

I bought a stuffed turkey joint from Aldi today.

It says about 1 hour cooking time defrosted. It’s been in the fridge since I bought it this morning so should be defrosted (it’s not a whole turkey just a piece with stuffing in the middle and wrapped in bacon)

I put it in the oven and because our oven is so powerful and easily burns food(!) I often cover things with foil, but loosely over the top

For this I put it in the oven about 45 mins ago but wrapped foil around both sides of the foil tin it came in

When I just checked it and the edges of the meat look white / cooked but the top of it, that I could see through the bacon, looked pink still

Will the foil being wrapped around it mean it’s not cooking or cooking V slowly??

I have put it back in with the foil loosely over the top but plan to take the foil out when it’s closer to cooked

🤔

This is what it looks like now

Seems to be making more progress now I’ve loosened the foil!

If it's got 15 minutes left I'd take the foil off now. Foil keeps moisture in and to stop direct heat but to cook the bacon nicely it'll need to more of a blast.

Yes it will cook more slowly covered in foil but still cook. To test it is done in the centre put a skewer or thin knife to the middle of the joint and check juices run clear. You can also touch the tip of the skewer to your tongue as soon as you pull it out of the joint and it should feel burning hot.

Just read the small print on the box. Since when can you oven cook meat from frozen? misses point of thread

Orchidflower1 · 17/11/2018 18:46

Needs quite a bit longer imho

AliceRR · 17/11/2018 18:48

Well there is stuffing in the middle too (prom and herb I think) so not sure if that will make it harder to tell if it’s harder to cook

It looks like it’s cooking more now but when I took it out about 15 mins ago the turkey still looked pink despite having been in about 45 mins

I think it needs more than 15 mins but not sure how long

Will have to just keep checking and will definitely take the foil off for the last 10-15 mins but seriously when I say our oven gets hot and burns things, it really does, so have to be careful

Need to get someone to look at it / call the manufacturer really

@SpoilsburyToastGirl

Says cook from frozen for best results but I have had it in the fridge since I bought it this morning

I think you’re right unfortunately

Hoping to have it ready soon as DH is planning to take his son to see a film shortly and we were planning to eat around 7 so they can leave around 7:30 (they have booked tickets)

If I can have it ready for about 7:15 should be ok

I would say if you bought it frozen and put it in the fridge it wouldn't be fully defrosted. So that will add more cooking time too.

Since when can you oven cook meat from frozen?

You can cook a small rolled joint or a steak etc from frozen as it is very even in size so when the centre is done it will be cooked throughout, whereas an uneven piece of meat or a bird would not cook evenly. Or a large joint might take too long to heat up to a safe temperature.

CovenofMiLsfromHades · 17/11/2018 18:55

If its taking too long, cut into thick slices then put it back in slices to finish cooking.

Spoilsbury

The last leg of frozen NZ lamb I bought from JS had 'can be cooked from frozen' in the instructions. I was surprised, too. I don't know what it would have tasted like, because I defrosted it overnight as usual in a cool kitchen.

NoParticularPattern · 17/11/2018 19:02

I think if the joint was in the fridge from this morning then it will have barely defrosted last the surface. I’d have been inclined to cook to for nearer to the 1h55 than 1h. I would also only have loosely wrapped the foil so allow air to circulate a bit better. Hopefully with the foil off it might come good soon!!

AliceRR · 17/11/2018 19:09

🙈

Foil off. Looks cooked thorough top half but bottom is not cooked!

Turned it over and put it back in without foil...

It’s been in nearly 1h25 mins now, 45 mins of which were with foil, but oven is v powerful!

I am a good cook generally but rubbish with roasts. I always underestimate cooking time!

(In case you are interested)

Bottom half cooked v quickly without foil on

Have now turned it over to Brown the top without foil so hopefully nearly there 👌
