To ask about M&S bras?

Wanted to take DD for first proper bra tomorrow at M and S but there are no appointments available, so I’ll just have to do it myself.

I don’t get my bras there and haven’t for decades, but I think they have a good selection of first bras.

Last time I went there myself they were still adding 5inches to back size, etc. Am I correct in thinking that they work like the sizes in other shops now and you don’t do that?

I tried their bra size calculator online but it’s crap as it just asks your back size and a load of questions about your current bra - no good if you don’t have one!

I know it’s not all about the measurements and know about how to look for a good fit, but I just wanted to work out a good starting point.

Is it just back size and then A=+1inch, B = +2inches, etc?

Thanks for your help

booborbust.com

Go anywhere but M&S.

"Go anywhere but M&S."

I don't agree. Measure your DD at home then take her to M and S. Their bra "fitting" service is deplorable, BUT, their bras are decent quality. I have a lot of M and S bras, but I use the MN booborbust size guide.

minisoksmakehardwork · 17/11/2018 18:19

I won't go anywhere near M&S for measuring. I was measured in two different stores and neither gave me the confidence to actually purchase from there. They just didn't feel well fitting.

Personally I favour John Lewis but I appreciate it's not an option for everyone.

Don’t get fitted in M&S! Or anywhere other than Bravissimo or Rigby and Peller.
Use the boob or bust calculator above and then use what it says to try lots on

I don't go to M&S myself (I'm 36G which they seem to fail to understand) however they were brilliant with DSD and did a great job of fitting her and finding her a great and comfortable bra

Shoppingwithmother · 17/11/2018 18:27

Thanks, Lonicera, that’s what I was hoping to do.

Minisoks, yes JL here doesn’t have any clothing.

Buffalo, thanks, I go to Bravissimo but I am rather at the other end of the bra scale to 11year old DD. No R and P here, so will do the Boob or Bust calculator.

I used to go to M&S years ago. I had been fitted in a proper bra shop and their bras were good. Then they went seriously downhill. I haven't bought one for years akd years there. Every now and again I'll try some on but they are horrible, particularly for the big of boob. I like Bravissimo but even Debenhams are better than M&S.

Shoppingwithmother · 17/11/2018 18:40

Boob or bust def doesn’t work for her - it’s come up with a huge cup size which is definitely not right.

I’ll just try lots on as suggested!

Yes, I just think they have a nice range of first bras in M&S. I had grown out of the M&S size range they had at the time by the age of 17, so not had anything to do with their bra fitting for a long time!

Boob or bust doesn't work for me either, I'm quite flat chested. M&S bras are great for me, if she doesn't need underwire etc yet they do some lovely bralets (I'm 34 and wear them they're not kiddy ones). The Rosie ones are lovely but might be a bit too mature depending on her age.
There fitting service is not great, I got fitted in their Durham branch once by a lady who didn't use a tape just 'sight and touch pet' she basically groped me a lot, she was actually accurate but it was still weird.

MrsStrowman · 17/11/2018 20:31

*the not there

Shoppingwithmother · 17/11/2018 21:03

Thanks they’re really nice - wish I could wear them!!

M&S is fine for first bras in small sizes. In fact I couldn't find anywhere else that had a choice of 28 back sizes (John Lewis Oxf St only had one non-wired bra in a 28back; M&S have a few).
I bought a load of 28s and 30s in multiple cup sizes online and we tried them all on at home until we found a fit and style we were happy with.
For larger sizes, I don't think they're good at all. They have very few small back / big cup combos, don't seem to go above an E cup in any style (?), and the bras are not very resilient and seem to stretch very quickly.

LoniceraJaponica · 17/11/2018 22:40

"and the bras are not very resilient and seem to stretch very quickly."

That has never been my experience. I wear a 32B so maybe mine don't get the wear and tear that larger ladies might.

dementedpixie · 17/11/2018 22:44

What size did it come out as? What do you count as a huge cup size? A 28E is much smaller than for example a 34E

Papergirl1968 · 17/11/2018 22:47

M&S were good with dd1 who is petite but relatively well endowed. It took a bit of trial and error but we got there in the end.

What ladies dress size is she? If she is a size 8 for example that is likely to be a 28 inch back size. Or smaller. Maybe you go and have a rummage what they sell, then go back with DD.
