6 yr old DD and skull 💀

Posting for traffic ... currently arguing with DD 6 so need some quick back up!

I found a skull in the garden. Asked DH to move it before DD saw (he had gloves on and I didn’t). From teeth and size I’d say a badger skull or maybe a fox (I didn’t examine too closely). DD overheard, wants to see it and maybe take it for show and tell 🤮

I found skulls myself at her age but small rodenty or bird ones on wood walks. This feels.. different. Would you let a six year old a) see it b) take it to school? Thanks!

Speaking as somebody whose DD used to appropriate the feet of the rabbits we ferreted when DH was skinning them, take them to school and hand them out - yes and yes. Kids love that sort of thing, and it's a good gateway into some elementary biology and ecology.

BettyDuMonde · 17/11/2018 15:22

Yes! And get her to your nearest natural history museum while her interest is peaked!

Seeingadistance · 17/11/2018 15:24

Yes and yes!

I'm jealous!

Ohsolomio · 17/11/2018 15:24

I'd be saying No. I'd let her see it, but fuck me I'm not boiling a skull in my kitchen. Puke. What is she going to 'tell' anyway? Daddy found this skull in the garden, we don't know what animal it belongs to, Mammy boiled it?

GerdaLovesLiIi · 17/11/2018 15:25

Skulls are absolutely fascinating! We just found a perfectly picked-clean rat skull in the compost heap.

WeeDangerousSpike · 17/11/2018 15:26

Yes and yes!

Also - any chance of a pic OP? Halo

GreenMeerkat · 17/11/2018 15:27

Of course!

It's biology, it's great that she is interested!

MoggEatMoggWorld · 17/11/2018 15:27

I had a sheep’s skull in my room I found on a walk when I was about eleven. Kept it for years 😂

maddiemookins16mum · 17/11/2018 15:29

Ooh yes.

BathFullOfEels · 17/11/2018 15:30

I can’t see a problem with that at all. But then I once took a human skull in for show and tell and was surprised when people got upset Blush

paxillin · 17/11/2018 15:30

Yes and yes.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 17/11/2018 15:31

My son took a skull in for show and tell at that age but I did email the teacher beforehand to ask/warn her! I then gave it to the beaver leader as she had a collection of natural things she kept to show the kids :)

MotorcycleMayhem · 17/11/2018 15:32

Yes to both.

Out of interest, would you feel differently if she were a boy?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/11/2018 15:33

You won't get TB from a skull!

SilverApples · 17/11/2018 15:33

Clean it thoroughly, soap and water with a toothbrush then soaking in hydrogen peroxide solution as it doesn’t destroy the delicate bits like ordinary bleach does.
Depending on your school, they may want it in a sealed container.

BathFullOfEels · 17/11/2018 15:34

What is it with dead badgers and TB this week?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 17/11/2018 15:36

Silver if it is what I think it is, it will still be in the tupperware Grin Just shake the last bits of rice out OP.

rainbowlou · 17/11/2018 15:36

I work in a school and we have had a dead snake, skulls and all manner of bones for show and tell.
The children find it fascinating so I’d say yes!

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 17/11/2018 15:36

As long as she doesn't get scared etc. when she sees it then it's a big yes from me.

When ds4 was in reception next doors cats left a mouse in our garden. The slugs stripped it clean and he wanted to take it to school to show the class the whole skeleton.

We put it in a clear bag and let the teacher know what it was in case there were some children who wouldn't like it and that his older brother wanted to show his class too. All the kids loved it and I believe it had a trip around a few more years than just the two the boys were in.

They would have loved a bigger skull to show around too.

DishranawaywiththeSpoon · 17/11/2018 15:37

Of course Id let her see it!

Me and my brother collected sheep's skulls at that age. We'd specifically go looking for them in areas where we knew dead sheep could be found. Skulls are absolutely fascinating, they are incredible bones, theres so much going on.

Lovemusic33 · 17/11/2018 15:40

Let her have it, she can look online to find out what it belonged too and then take it to school for show and tell. Skulls are pretty cool, I wish I had a collection 🤣

museumum · 17/11/2018 15:41

See it - yes.

Touch? Hmmm depends. I’d rather clean it first. Museum taxidermists use biological washing powder to remove any remaining tissue residue.

gallicghoul · 17/11/2018 15:43

@BathFullOfEels where the hell did you get a human skull from?????

SoupDragon · 17/11/2018 15:46

You won't get TB from a skull!

Thank goodness someone said this. I thought "TB from a skull?? Surely not!"

user1495884620 · 17/11/2018 15:47

You don't live near some woods in Hertfordshire do you?
