Should I push for this opportunity?

I work in a project-based role in one department.

I have pushed for an opportunity to go on a short secondment with a neighbouring dept (which is on the same floor!), with a view to getting a full-time role out of this.

How can I explain the secondment decision to my own dept, in a diplomatic way? I am still on a training contract with them so I'm not sure how they'll welcome my decision,

Didn't you tell your own manager before you "pushed for the secondment"? Or do you mean, how to explain to the wider team?

I don't have a manager, oddly enough! There is no-one that I really report to. But obviously there are senior people who I work for more frequently, who I would like to speak to directly.

Just tell them you are broadening your experience within the wider organisation which will make you more valuable to the team (then don't go back if you can get a permanent job in the other team)

Thanks, sounds good - the only issue they may have with it is that this is potentially a pivotal year for me promotion-wise (historically a lot of people in my position have been promoted this year, and thus use the year to get as much direct work experience as possible within our department, to build the case for promotion)... For various reasons, I have decided against attempting to go down this route this year, but am nevertheless not sure how my decision will be received.
