Or has it always been this way?

Has there always been so much shite mass produced music about?

I'm 27 so born in 90s. I remember growing up with Madonna - Ray of Light, Michael Jackson, some proper classics. I don't recall hundreds of artists singing about sex and ex boyfriends in the way they do now... at least Spice Girls and Britney had a bit of something about them!!

AIBU to feel a bit sad about the music industry in its current form? It has it always been this way and I've just not noticed in my childhood/teen years?

I was a 90s teen and the charts were definitely more eclectic, dance, pop, rnb, grunge, and even novelty songs all coexisting along.

What bugs me is it seems to be a merry go round of artists collaborating on each other's tracks. 'Song by X ft Y' then 'Song by Y ft X and A'.

I'm a bit sick of the constant shit thrown at Little Mix on MN, tbh. Not necessarily aimed at you OP you just don't like their music but the constant slut shaming is not on; I've seen countless parents on here saying that if they have young fans they shouldn't be 'acting like prostitutes' since when is telling women they look like prostitutes better than showing some thigh?

And tbh they haven't been producing kids music for quite a while now, their last two albums have been about much more adult themes. It's not their fault they have young fans is it? Should they change their whole brand because they have an audience that their music isn't even aimed towards anymore? I listened to their new album and if I do say so myself it's actually quite goodGrin

Sorry if I went on a bit of a rant thereGrin I'm just a bit fed up with the constant slut shaming on this forum.

I'm 30, and I look back at the 90's with rose tinted glasses. Aqua, the spirit girls, no doubt, the libertines,

Dp is 46 and looks back at the 90's as the time instruments were forgotten. In the 90's Travis were indie cool, I mean wtf?

Really? To buy kerramg or metal hammer I could only go to a few shops. Now I think you can pick them up in tesco or wh Smith.
Also I thought little mix were quite good for lyrics. Wings etc?

I'm not aware of this modern music you speak of as I'm still listening to all the 90's classics Grin

Modern music is not crap, you're just not looking hard enough for the good stuff. I hate the line of thinking that some people take; i.e. they hear shite that's in the charts and declare all music to be crap. It's so... tedious.

You've always had to seek out music that goes beyond the mainstream. Add to that the fact that the charts are so diluted by the sheer number of genres and availability of music in an 'uncountable' way, it means that you need relatively paltry sales to get a number 1 now. However, there are more people making amazing music, because they don't have to rely on what industry execs think is likely to make them money to fund huge recording studios and expensive rolls of tape!

What kind of music do you like - I'll bet someone on here can recommend a couple of artists that will restore your faith, and then you can enjoy the modern phenomenon of going down a streaming rabbit hole listening to suggested tracks based on your own personal preferences, which I personally think is one of the best things about the 21st century music scene!
