To not know if I want the job

Civil servant. Been at middle management grade for around 15 years whilst I brought up my children alone. I've now got a very supportive OH and my children are getting to high school age.
I've been shortlisted for a job the next grade up. I do really want to progress but I am
A) shite at competency interviews
B) not sure I want the role. It will be busier, more stressful and will involve a certain level of travel.
So as not to drip feed, one child is chronically ill and the other is anxious and struggling in school.
I don't want to waste anyone's time so don't know whether to go for the interview or pull out as I'm not sure I would accept the job
AIBU to not know how to decide?

Do you have a supportive line manager?
What grade is the new role

Always go for the interview. Even if you don't want the job you 1) show that progression is something you are interested in and 2) gain valuable interview practice for if a job you really want comes up. You can always turn it down later.

I do have a supportive LM and the prospective one would be too. It's SEO.

I think I'll have to do the interview won't I...

First of all, well done on getting the interview!

I definitely think you should go for it, OP.

You’ve done so well to get this far, so it would definitely be worthwhile to go to the interview. Going to the interview will also give you even more of an insight into what the role is like and the people that you’ll be working with. It will also give you the option of still considering this job in case you change your mind and would still like to consider the job. You’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain by going to the interview.

Good luck! Flowers

Go for the interview practice. Preparing for the interview also helps you to gell your thoughts about taking the next step up. Seriously you might not get the job anyway, which might make you more keen the next time a similar job comes up. That is how it works for me anyway.
