To use eggs a week after best before date?

I will obviously give them a sniff when I crack them open etc and if they’re past it, I will definitely notice and won’t use them.

It is for baking btw, not eating with toast or anything.

I’m sure my gran and mum used to do this and was fine.

Thoughts?

I do all the time. They really seem to last. If in doubt you can do the float test.

LovingLola · 16/11/2018 18:57

Please use them. Do not waste perfectly good food.

hazeydays14 · 16/11/2018 18:58

Float them in water to check if they’re okay apparently.. can’t remember if they sink or float if bad but google should have that answer Grin

NotANotMan · 16/11/2018 18:58

Eggs last for weeks after their use by date

Hidillyho · 16/11/2018 18:58

I didn’t know they had a best before date so I have probably used them past this with no issues

Thewindsofchange · 16/11/2018 18:58

Eggs last ages.

NinkyNonkyNinkyNonk · 16/11/2018 18:58

Put the egg in a cup of water, if it floats, it's bad, if it stays at the bottom, it's fine to use.

Aquiver · 16/11/2018 18:58

Absolutely fine. You can test them for freshness with an (almost) full glass of water. If they float right to the top, the egg is not at its best (the air pocket expands), but if they sink to the bottom or middle of the glass they are fine.

Lwmommy · 16/11/2018 18:58

Pop the egg in a glass of water. If it sinks to the bottom and lays on its side its good.if it floats its bad

Nixee2231 · 16/11/2018 18:58

Put them in a glass of water. If they float they are bad. If they stay upright at the bottom they are fine to eat. Only the very fresh ones stay at the bottom completely on their sides.

Nocado · 16/11/2018 18:58

Totally fine. You can test them in water if they sink or stay suspended is fine, floating is too old. But it takes mine weeks beyond BB date to float.

dun1urkin · 16/11/2018 18:59

I had fried eggs on toast for lunch today, 10 days after best before date Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 16/11/2018 18:59

It’ll be fine. In the days before sell-by/use-by dates, mum used to have a special cup into which she cracked eggs, to apply the sniff test.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 16/11/2018 18:59

I'd use them without hesitation, wouldn't even do the water test on them.

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 16/11/2018 18:59

Oh good, glad I’m not being grim by using them. I can never tell, as I hate food waste and this can cloud my judgement somewhat. I’ve never got food poisoning though (yet) so meh.

I'd use them. I wouldn't even bother doing a test on them.

NoParticularPattern · 16/11/2018 19:02

Definitely fine. We have eggs from our hens and surprisingly they don’t come out with best before dates on 😂. Once found a nest of 32 (yes that’s right, not a typo!) and they were all from the same hen (we only have one that lays those colour eggs). Float tested then all and they were all absolutely fine- hardly even moved from horizontal. They’d been outside for however long it took her to lay 32 eggs (probably 6 weeks) in that heat this summer. I’m still surprised they weren’t cooked!! All perfectly edible and totally fine. Made pickled eggs with them!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 16/11/2018 19:02

I love doing the float test, it makes me feel all canny and thrifty and housewifely. (Which makes a change from the rest of my slatternly ways!)

UpstartCrow · 16/11/2018 19:02

If they float at the top in water they're definitely bad so don't even crack them. Near the top they should still be fine.

Unihorn · 16/11/2018 19:04

I've definitely used eggs up to about 2 months past best before dates. My husband was horrified.

Shannaratiger · 16/11/2018 19:04

I found tomatoes in the fridge last week Best Before September 20th - they tasted fine! Shock

WithAFaeryHandInHand · 16/11/2018 19:04

Tbf I don’t think I’ve ever had an egg properly float... I imagine they’d need to be really old to do it.

theconstantinoplegardener · 16/11/2018 19:05

I use eggs that are a week past their best before date and more. No problems so far. Mind you, I do store them in the fridge. I suppose they might deteriorate faster if you keep them in a hot kitchen.

strawberrypenguin · 16/11/2018 19:05

They'll be fine. And on the teeny tiny chance they aren't you'll know the second you crack it!

Or if you want to check before you get that far do the float test. An egg that sink is a good one.

theymademejoin · 16/11/2018 19:15

I've only ever have an egg fail the float test and it was about 2 months past its best before. The other 2 that were in the box were fine and I used them to make a cake. 'Twas yum.
