To object to feeling obliged to wear a bra?

Admittedly I'm on the small side in that department (about a 12B). I stopped wearing a bra as much as possible a couple of years ago because I was having a lot of breast pain and it seemed to help to have no restriction. I haven't worn one at all since I got pregnant and grew out of my bras and am now breast feeding - baby nearly 5 months, so much easier not to have to bother with clasps and hooks etc. It was fine during winter but now it's summer I'm feeling a bit embarrassed - but at the same time I'm really beginning to object to the idea that we should all be hitched up and pulled in and trying to pretend that boobs look nothing like they really do - or am I turning into a raving leftie hippie-type?

Very small myself and only wear them if I am breastfeeding, so I have something to keep the breastpads in place with.

  • but the women with the saggy norks probably wore ill fitting bras. No - it isn't an invention of the fashion industry.

Wear a decent bra or have nipples face due South

flibbertyjibbet · 20/06/2007 16:57

Wow, I am impressed that bra-less you are not dripping milk all over the place - I had to wear one whilst bf and have breastpads in all the time or I'd have left a trail.

iota · 20/06/2007 16:57

In my pre children days I was a 34A and often didn't wear a bra - it's a nice free feeling

kimi · 20/06/2007 17:01

If I went out with out my bar I would have to kick my boobs along

MilkMonitor · 20/06/2007 17:24

I really notice if someone isn't wearing a bra. It makes me wince because I imagine the pain if you have to run suddenly.

I guess YANBU but I think one does look better with a bra on. But that's just my personal choice. If you don't want to, then go for it. You'll get lots of stares and comments though but so what?

barney2 · 20/06/2007 17:39

What I absolutely hate to see is a bra being worn that is far too small and boobs hanging out over the top. How can that be comfortable? I have to wear a bra otherwise mine sit on my waistband and the only time I've been flat chested is when I've been lying down and they disappear down into my armpits!!

FrannyandZooey · 20/06/2007 17:47

I didn't used to wear one - didn't really used to need one

then I kind of did need to but it was hard to get into the habit of it

Since ds I REALLY need to and I think I look vastly better with a good bra on - "better" of course being defined by the popular opinion of our times that breasts should only be high and round - but I don't fancy blazing a trail on this particular issue

good luck to you braless or not - why should other people care?

barney2 · 20/06/2007 17:53

I envy anyone who doesn't need to wear a bra - it must be lovely..... !!

Desiderata · 20/06/2007 17:56

... you're turning into a raving leftie hippy.

Curmudgeonlett · 20/06/2007 18:00

you're turning into a raving leftie hippie-type

and if you don't support your breasts whilst breastfeeding you will end up with them round your waist

nightowl · 20/06/2007 18:00

i'd graze my nipples on the pavement if i didnt wear a bra

barney2 · 20/06/2007 19:01

The person walking behind me would trip up on mine! As would the person behind him/her and the passing double decker bus!...

I'm a milk dripper - so have to wear bra and breast pads. I have always worn a bra and think everyone should wear a well fitted bra that is supportive. One of my pet hates is the double boob effect and the flabby back thing. (Not meant to offend just feel some ladies should take more pride in/care of their body)

Oh and pants that match or at least white not grey

barney2 · 20/06/2007 19:22

Ahhhh...pants....yes....now that's a different story.....I like the one's that come up to my armpits - the Bridget Jones variety. I have to be comfortable in pants. I wore a thong once...I never did find it again - I lost it up there somewhere - they're not very suitable for big bums and not at all comfortable...as I found out.

New thread:

To object to feeling obliged to wear pants

My dh would say not wearing pants is fine - but having seen some delightful photos of celebs getting out of cars, I would say you should wear pants

barney2 · 20/06/2007 19:54

oh octo...you are funny!!!

Wear pants/not wear pants....

mmmmm...difficult question....

dh: don't bother.

me: wear them, the big elastic ones, wear two pairs...who cares? Got to keep it all tucked in somehow!

octo · 20/06/2007 19:58

barney2 - Ithink you have some good song lyrics there ....

barney2 · 20/06/2007 20:03

Watch this space.....X-Factor here I come!!!

poppynic · 20/06/2007 21:40

ohh noo - actually I do drip everywhere breastfeeding - so much in fact that breastpads are absolutely useless - everything just ends up a wet soggy mess - so - tactic for this baby is loose top which I pull out when leaking so hopefully most lands at least on my waistline which isn't so easily hidden and the rest - just being one layer dries quickly. On weekend while out in park managed to discretely squirt in direction of partner - who of course objected - but didn't have much to say when I asked him where he thought I should squirt!! Anyway, on that subject that's why yes to pants - coz any leaks in that area infinitely more embarrassing imo....

when I say "isn't so easily hidden" I mean, of course, "is more easily hidden".

Hang loose baby!

PetronellaPinkPants · 21/06/2007 09:52

I would LOVE to not wear a bra
but my norks are just the wrong size
C cup is worst of both worlds, not big enough to really flaunt, not small enough to go without a bra

GreebosWhiskers · 21/06/2007 10:23

I have to wear a bra just now - ds decided a while ago to only feed from the left nork thus causing it to produce loads of milk & the other to dry up. This means that my left side is often 2 cup sizes bigger than my right & a totally different shape so I need a shaped t-shirt bra to even things up somewhat

Am I the world's first hunch-boob?
