Inspired by another thread, what are things that give you the willies?

My biggest one is houseboats.

desperately hoping other people get the willies too

Driving through the Dartford tunnel and we all stopped. That made me feel unsettled the other day.

Having dry skin, like when you've washed your hands and they are squeaky, or touching a blackboard/chalk, or after swimming in sea and skin all dry and salty after.

Seaweed. I'm completely terrified of it. I cry if the children threaten to chuck it at me.

Dirt under my fingernails! So I can't garden (yay! I hate it)
Long thumb nails on men.
Woodlice, can't touch them, alive or dead.
Teeth-those people that keep all their kids first teeth AND HAVE THEM ON DISPLAY!!! what's that about?
Teeth generally, when my girls had to have braces they went into the dentists room on their own, I couldn't go with them. In fact, when the orthodontist was showing me their x-rays and what they were going to do I put my hand up to stop him as I was nearly sick in his face.

When I'm feeling generally stressed and anxious, 2 things make me panic.
The first is when I'm in bed and switch the light out - the dark makes me feel really claustrophibic, but turning a light on doesn't make it to away, because it's the sense of the whole of our part of the world being without daylight that makes me feel weird and freaked out.
The second is sort of related, in a bizarre way. It's the feeling of claustrophobia and panic you get when you're trying on clothes and you get stuck trying to get out of them, with your arms over your head - I get the same panicky feeling when I think about not being able to get my wedding ring off. There have been times when I've been tempted to cut it off, just because the idea of it on my finger is unbearable.

Baked beans. How people can sit in a bath full of them I'll never know I can't even clean a pan they've been in for fear it touches me 😷
Food in the sink especially soggy bread. Boak.

Cornflour. It has a horrid squeaky feeling when you touch it that I can’t stand.
Wooden cutlery. Especially the little ice cream spoons

Whiskeyjar I'm the same. I can't stand people on stilts. I freaked out once when I had to walk between the legs of a man on stilts.

I know it won't happen IRL, but I have recurring dreams of doors on toilets being too small, so they are a tiny door in the middle but when a person is sat down on the toilet you can see all of their legs at the bottom and their head at the top. The door only blocks off the body. Hate going to toilets in America where you can see through the gaps.

I wonder whether becoming anxious or having phobias about belly buttons may have something to do with the vagus nerve and parasympathetic nervous system. Similarly, feeling queasy when doing pelvic floor exercises, as someone mentioned.

I’m not a medical professional by any means, but I do know the vagus nerve is the messenger between the brain and gut. Before we’re born, the umbilical cord (later belly button scar) and bladder are connected; some people even require surgery because their belly buttons leak urine.

Anyway, probing around inside the belly button may stimulate the vagus nerve and create weird sensations of anxiety or dizziness - quite an off-putting experience.

There’s quite a lot of research going on now with blocking the vagus nerve signal to help people with chronic anxiety, so I wonder if there may be something going on with the parasympathetic nervous system which is involved with belly button phobias. Or I could be talking complete nonsense.

My phobias come and go, but claustrophobia’s probably #1. Black Friday shopping is my worst nightmare! #2 is the wooden popsicle stick between the teeth. Horrible!

Thinking about wrist joints. Ball and socket ones like hips are fine, but the idea of all those little bones sliding over each other makes me feel clammy.

Bits of eggshell in cooking, or grit in veg. I am fanatical about washing leeks before slicing because I hate the feeling of grit in my mouth.

Fingernails. Long ones are horrid.

Cutlery screeching on plates, or when your teeth screech together.

The idea of a seal appearing under me when I swim in deep seawater (I love sea swimming, but have to carefully not think about seals. They are just so big.)

Mirrors, stairs, and long landings at night.

Washing my hair in the house on my own. I feel like something might rip my jugular/strangle me while I’ve got my head back and my eyes closed against the shampoo froth Blush.

Injections and especially blood tests. The reality is always ok but I hate the thought. Piercings and tattoos both fine though. It’s ludicrous.
