To think Ocado is expensive?

I was going to sign up to Ocado, but it seems overpriced. Am I missing something? Why do people rave about it?

I love Ocado! They sell things that you often can’t get elsewhere and it’s all good quality.
I also love the texts “your order will be delivered by Pedro in Olive van, you have no missing items” 😀

NashvilleQueen · 15/11/2018 22:05

Your bag price is taken off that shop not the next one so no obligation to be drawn in.

Smart pass at £6.99 is good value

They are undoubtedly the best online grocery company.

NancyDonahue · 15/11/2018 22:05

Their own brand stuff is good as is the Waitrose essential range. I usually only shop from the offers. Basic like bread, butter, milk etc are only a few pence more than lidl/Aldi.

I had the offer of money off plus midweek delivery for a year when I signed up. It was well worth it.

So handy for when the dcs are ill or I'm ill or I just need a few bits and don't want to risk over spending in the supermarket.

NancyDonahue · 15/11/2018 22:07

Oh yes and the drivers are fabulous.

Rachelover40 · 15/11/2018 22:38

I use Ocado regularly and think they offer very good value for money.
They have plenty of offers every week too.

SparklyLeprechaun · 15/11/2018 22:50

Great service, good products, hardly any substitutions, same price as Tesco or thereabouts. I moved to an area without Ocado deliveries and I miss them Sad

And have you seen their automated warehouse? Amazing!

ASliceOfLife · 15/11/2018 22:54

They put raw meat in the same bag as fresh strawberries. Boak.

pinkchampagne1 · 15/11/2018 23:23

Another good thing with Ocado is that if you add something to your basket that is on offer but the offer finishes before your shopping is delivered, you still only pay the reduced price. With a Tesco shop if the price of an item on offer goes up on the day your shop is delivered then they charge you the full amount.

Racecardriver · 15/11/2018 23:26

Unless you shop at Lidl/Aldi which are significantly cheaper it won’t make a difference. You may even save money by making good use of their offers. Our weekly Ocado shop would typically cost £80. In a supermarket we’d soend one and a half times as much. Don’t know how we managed that but there you go.

Amanduh · 15/11/2018 23:28

Yes its expensive. Some items aren’t, but overall my shop is about £20-30 more expensive there. The quality is no better and brands are the same.

EchoCardioGran · 15/11/2018 23:41

Staff are lovely and I liked their produce.

I stopped using them when I read that the top boss Tim Steiner attended something called the Presidents Club gala a while back now.

It was men only business types and was supposed to raise money for charity. Hostesses were hired for the event, some of them young students, and they were groped and sexually harassed. At a charity fund raiser. Dirty old rich mens night out.

I have no idea because they don't deliver up north.

And the think women are offensive, so I won't campaign for it.

PurdysChocolate · 15/11/2018 23:52

I did find Ocado had a good selection of organic foods which is why I liked to use them.

But I stopped using them after the incident on social media where Ocado said that defining a woman as an adult human female was not in line with their values.

RedSkyLastNight · 16/11/2018 08:06

I suspect it might depend on what you buy/how you shop as well.
Even with 15% off and cherry picking the "bargains", an Ocado shop of my usual things always comes in higher than the equivalent at Tesco/Sainsburys/Morrisons. They only price match Tesco on branded items so if you buy a lot of own brand this doesn't really help (though I guess I've answered my own question here - if you do buy lots of branded items, there probably isn't much different cost wise).

BarbaraofSevillle · 16/11/2018 08:56

Price matching with Tesco doesn't mean much as they are one of the most expensive supermarkets anyway. Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Asda much cheaper.

OutPinked · 16/11/2018 08:57

YANBU. It’s unnecessarily expensive imo. I’m an Aldi convert now and would never revert back to any other supermarket. I used to like the flash sales and they are very efficient with delivery but it’s not worth the extra £20-40 it cost a week compared to Aldi.

OutPinked · 16/11/2018 08:58

I have no idea because they don't deliver up north.

They definitely deliver across Yorkshire.

sernamu20 · 07/04/2020 18:18

I just ordered a few groceries through a friend but found that Ocado is quite expensive and the fruits I received were not of any standard. I get better fruit from Tesco Asda and Lidle compared to this.
