to think cannula site shouldn't still hurt?

I had a cannula in my arm for 3 days. A few large injections of penicillin and one bag of fluid with paracetamol. It was taken out a week ago, but the site where my cannula was is still sore and achey. Mostly when I'm holding DC (he's only 6lbs) or using my phone etc.

I don't remember ever having a cannula in before so not sure if it's normal to still hurt.

Does this sound normal?

Mine hurt for a year on and off. I’m medical so kind of expected it.

Wouldn’t be able to point to where it was now so I wouldn’t worry.

Congrats on your wee one Flowers

It is possible. Is it bruised? Red or inflamed? Could it possibly be infected?

Antibiotics can be pretty nasty to tissue as they’re a harsh substances, though they are usually given diluted down at least to some degree to ensure the concentration doesn’t damage/hurt the tissue it’s infused into. It’s possible your arm is just uncomfortable due to what was infused.

However, a cannula is breaking the natural infection barrier that is human skin and whilst it doesn’t take that long for bleeding around the site to stop when the cannula is removed, it takes a little longer to heal completely and is a potential infection risk.

Definitely normal. Mine hurt for months!

Whereartthouname · 15/11/2018 11:53

I had a ce tral line in my neck. A year later i still have no feeling from my collar bone to my chine in a 1 inch strip. I think sometimes they hit nerves

bertiesgal · 15/11/2018 14:29

Should have added if spreading warmth/redness/yellowy green stuff coming from it then that’s completely different and should be seen xxx

I've had around 18 so far, all in the same arm. Generally I had a bruised / achey feeling for a week or two in the area around it.

vinegarqueen · 15/11/2018 14:36

Mine ached for a couple of months!

UpstartCrow · 15/11/2018 14:37

Other than the bruised feeling, are there any other symptoms such as heat, swelling or a change in the colour?

Panicmode1 · 15/11/2018 14:37

I had surgery two weeks ago. The bruise is only just fading, so it takes a bit of time!

zippyswife · 15/11/2018 14:39

Mine hurt for a year or so after dc1. I’ve had others since that never hurt at all.

weegiemum · 15/11/2018 14:41

I have a cannula every month for a treatment I get in hospital. Usually ok after a day or so but can be achey for a week if it was a bit hard to get in.

PrivateDoor · 15/11/2018 14:44

Yep totally normal. As others have said, just watch for signs of infection. They are very invasive so it is no wonder they are sore really Sad I donated blood recently and was left with a massive bruise that still hurts sometime later, sometimes it is because insufficient pressure is applied to the site after removal or in the case of a cannula specifically, that it tissued prior to removal. However even if all has been ok with it, they still can cause pain. Hope it feels better soon and congrats on your baby!
