AIBU to dream of buying this house?

AIBU to dream of giving up the rat race to buy this?

www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-76698701.html

It's a total pipe dream, obviously - I have no idea how DH and I would earn an income or anything like that. But imagine waking up to that countryside every morning!

It also seems like great value for money, given that amount wouldn't even buy a studio flat in my part of London.

Anyway, back to the real world...

Dart Cottage is gorgeous.

We moved from London to the country six years ago. We are in a national park. I never get bored of being able to walk out of my gate straight into stunning countryside. We’re in a village too, with plenty of amenities and stuff going on, so not isolated.

I bloody love it.

greendale17 · 15/11/2018 20:36

Hideous house inside, all needs ripping out and renovating

Dragongirl10 · 15/11/2018 20:39

Have you actually spent a winter on Dartmoor Op......!

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 15/11/2018 20:46

I know the area well. Beautiful but touristy in summer, bleak in the winter. Locals used to say "we winter them, we summer them, we winter them again" of incomers, meaning that most people would be off again once they'd done two winters!

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 15/11/2018 20:47

2nd one is another Duchy lease.

Worieddd · 15/11/2018 20:53

It’s James Herberts Magic Cottage! Shock

nicebitofquiche · 15/11/2018 20:57

My idea of hell. I'd hate to live there. I'd be bored stiff.

MintyCedric · 15/11/2018 20:58

It'd be a definite no from me - I won't even buy Duchy Originals biscuits on principle.

Have you ever seen 'Bad Move?!

Rachelover40 · 16/11/2018 00:53

Beautiful and very cheap. You could take in a couple of lodgers during good weather, airbnb type stuff, to earn some cash.

I like visiting such places and staying a few days but wouldn't leave London. I'd be scared of being so isolated but I'm a confirmed towny.

Juells · 16/11/2018 08:51

Have you seen there's only a few years left on the lease, and as well as the purchase price there's a hefty charge every year?

Bodear · 16/11/2018 08:56

@Kool4katz I’m moving to Ireland soon and spending a lot of time on daft. I can’t find anything close to what you’re talking about within a decent commute of Dublin. Do you have any advice about areas/ towns I should look at?

Juells · 16/11/2018 09:16

@Bodear

What's your budget? There are some quite nice little towns off the N4, that area.

Teddy1970 · 16/11/2018 09:26

No, it's too isolated for me and Dartmoor is dead spooky, I've always said that if I can stay in a house totally on my own (no DH or DC) then I'd be ok there, but that cottage? No way! I also hate the thought of not having at least one neighbour to call on in an emergency.

Bouledeneige · 16/11/2018 09:29

hmm - great location and outlook. not nice inside - makes me feel a bit depressed.

And all the duchy stuff - no thanks.

Bodear · 16/11/2018 09:31

@Juells thanks! We really need a garage and they seem quite tricky to find. Not many houses in Ireland have them it seems? Our budget is c€400k.

Doubletrouble99 · 16/11/2018 09:46

Bodear - get a house with space then get one built!

Reluctant2ndtimer · 16/11/2018 09:54

Both your houses are stunning OP but if you really want wildly romantic how about coming up north? And if you do, please can I come round to play in your new garden? Check out this place near me

Only older houses, or houses in the country, tend to have garages.

If you see a house online that you like, message me and if I know what the area is like I'll tell you.

JudyGrandChamp · 16/11/2018 10:26

Half of my family is originally from the South West and I never thought that I was going to live anywhere other than Exmoor - one day you'll all see me on Escape to the Country, one day!

LaurieFairyCake · 16/11/2018 10:41

That second one you posted OP is also Duchy - £3000 a year ground rent

Bodear · 16/11/2018 10:42

Thanks @Juells that’s really nice of you

littlemisscomper · 16/11/2018 10:54

one day you'll all see me on Escape to the Country, one day!

That program, to use modern parlance, 'Gives me rage'!

Househunters say they need a 4 bedroom house with a large open plan kitchen and minimum 2 acres of land - they're shown a 3 bedroom house ('You could convert the garage?') with no land at all ('the farmer across the road might let you a field?') and a galley kitchen ('We have to compromise on something!') Confused

Ladytramp · 16/11/2018 11:53

reluctant2ndtimer
Never! That's like Hill House!

MarshaBradyo · 16/11/2018 11:57

I would really not like it

expatmigrant · 16/11/2018 11:57

No not for me sorry. Too much of a city girl.
