To think headlights are too dazzling?

I hate driving at night and it seems to be worse when other cars are coming in the opposite direction. Driving on a single carriageway this evening on a 60 MPH road and once a few cars pass together I lose complete sight of the road in front of ME!

I've tried switching between contact lenses and glasses & glasses with anti glare but no difference. It's not even the windscreen as using different cars.

Absolutely agree, they're bloody awful.

I think it smacks of the age we live in, I'm alright and did everyone else. Especially bad on a 4x4 as obviously they're higher up and totally blind you, not particularly conducive to driving

Bippityboo2 · 14/11/2018 21:57

I hate it, especially now I'm going to and from work in the dark. I thought I was more sensitive because of my glasses, despite the anti glare coating. I got a newer car this year and it has a special tint in the back windscreen to save on rear dazzles, it's been a godsend. Driving today at 7am in torrential rain I was dazzled numerous times, I just have to focus low on the road til my vision clears. YANBU

MaxTeyon · 14/11/2018 21:57

I think it doesn't help how easy it is to adjust the angle, and so many people seem to have theirs on the highest angle

All factory fitted LEDs and Xenons are self levelling.

CurbsideProphet · 14/11/2018 21:58

Completely agree. I have anti glare lenses in my glasses, but it doesn't help. We live in a semi rural location and I hate driving at night on the windy roads, as suddenly I'm blinded by an oncoming vehicle whipping around the corner.

irishe · 14/11/2018 22:01

This is so interesting!
For the first time in 30yrs I have had to dip my mirror whilst driving home at night. The glare from cars behind me is unbelievable.
I had wondered if my eyes were aging/changing as I am approaching 50.
Didn’t realise that headlights were brighter, explains a lot. Not good at all.

Arrivederci · 14/11/2018 22:03

@MaxTeyon oh my mistake. My ds3 has a headlight adjust on the steering wheel column and I know they're really bright so assumed it was common

IdiotsIdiotsEverywhere · 14/11/2018 22:03

I've just ordered some night driving glasses, I didn't realise they were 'a thing'!

I have read somewhere recently online after being dazzled by the glow of the morning and afternoon sun that strong light is very harmful for eye and eventually will affect the eye sight. Same is for the light coming from the cars. They strongly advise to wear sun glasses with special lenses during the day to prevent cataract in the future.

Minta85 · 14/11/2018 22:05

I totally agree. I’d actually been thinking that it was idiots driving with their lights on full beam! Another horrible symptom of the world we live in now - everything is unnecessarily loud and bright.

TroysMammy · 14/11/2018 22:06

Thank goodness I've found this thread as I thought it was just me. I hate driving in the dark too. My anti glare glasses are hopeless. Luckily my commute is just 10 minutes each way.

Drogosnextwife · 14/11/2018 22:08

And when people are behind and blinding you in every one of the mirrors! I hate driving at night, I can hardly see.

MaxTeyon · 14/11/2018 22:09

My ds3 has a headlight adjust on the steering wheel column and I know they're really bright so assumed it was common

Then you have traditional halogen headlights and not LEDs or Xenons

AlpacaLypse · 14/11/2018 22:10

Even if night driving glasses work for OP and some pps, what about those of us who have to wear spectacles full stop? I've already coughed up for prescription day specs and prescription sunglasses, that was about £600. And that was with NHS vouchers.

UsedBySomebodyAlready · 14/11/2018 22:10

YANBU. I thought it was just me!
I've got 20/20 vision but I really struggle with driving at night. I used to enjoy it but now I loathe it, and this would explain it, it's the lights! Sometimes I feel so dazzled that I don't feel particularly safe. As a PP said, my own headlights light up sod all.

IdiotsIdiotsEverywhere · 14/11/2018 22:12

@AlpacaLypse I wear glasses more than my contact lenses. Just like sunglasses, of I'm driving and need them I will pop them over the top of my glasses! There are clip on one's available but I think they'd be too fiddly mid-dazzled-drive!!!!

Talking of indicators, the newer cars seem to be making them as hard to see as possible.
I was behind an Audi that had them like chaser lights, when the brake lights came on they disappeared.
Then one yesterday, the back lights/indicators were in a flower type of shape. The indicator was in the middle of the "petals". Absolutely rubbish to see.

Ozil10 · 14/11/2018 22:14

I thought it was my eyes! I'm so pleased it's affecting other people top, well not pleased but you know what I mean

Mishappening · 14/11/2018 22:16

I find it so hard driving at night.

Two thoughts: have you checked your own headlights? I was having such a lot of trouble with oncoming lights and not being able to see the road when |I dipped mine - I discovered that one dipped headlight was not working!

The other thought is that it is worth getting checked for early cataracts because these sometimes first become evident when people cannot cope with headlight dazzle.

TokyoSushi · 14/11/2018 22:16

YANBU!!! I've noticed it a lot more this year too!

Arrivederci · 14/11/2018 22:17

@MaxTeyon no they're not leds, think we've got our wires crossed here. I've been saying that people setting their own angle on their lights can dazzle, per my experience from my own car

Ouch44 · 14/11/2018 22:19

Glad it's not just me! I thought it was my eye sight getting worse as I got older but makes sense that it's people switching to LED bulbs.

I drove down the motorway at night the other day and I had all of this. The blue tinted lights that I kept thinking was an emergency vehicle. Bright lights coming the opposite way so that I couldn't see the road markings and also someone blinding me in my mirror and thinking they had their headlights on full. Also the lights seem to bounce off the window and my glasses and make it hard to focus on the road!

simbobs · 14/11/2018 22:20

I too have been having problems with this, and have spoken to my optician about it, thinking it was just poor night vision. There is a new type of lens with a different coating from anti-glare coating (which is purple), more pink in colour, called Road Pilot. Apparently some people with perfect vision get them with plain glass to help with this problem. They seem to reduce glare, having tried them over my normal glasses. I am going to get some, as I no longer feel safe driving at night.

Hippopotas · 14/11/2018 22:22

I get this too and I hate it. I’m scared of driving at night because of the stupid dazzling headlights.

Ellieboolou27 · 14/11/2018 22:22

Yay I’m not mad! I was having this conversation with my dad last night, we both agreed it’s very difficult driving at night due to dazzling headlights. I don’t have glasses and I’ve now started going a different route home to avoid country lanes as I’m worried I’ll have an accident.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/11/2018 22:25

YANBU, plus with so many tank sized cars on the road they are higher (than my tiny micra) and completely blind me!!! I hate night driving.
