When is it a chocolate bar and when is it a biscuit?

Just bought chunky kitkat, definitely in the sweeties isle. Been told by DD that they are biscuits. Also mars bars, that was definitely chocolate bars. Noticed that normal kitkat are in the biscuits isle. ?
So when does a chocolate biscuit stop being a chocolate biscuit and become a chocolate bar?
I realise this is trivia but genuinely interested ( and probably should devote more of my thinking time to more worthy causes)

Biscuits are loose in the packet or packed in multi packs as standard. I guess.

Houseonahill · 14/11/2018 20:05

KitKat is a biscuit DD is right. I think it's when the biscuit to chocolate ratio is 50% biscuit or more.

I always wonder what category a Malteser falls into?

ReflectionsofParadise · 14/11/2018 20:05

Also a kitkat chunky is nothing like a normal kitkat. You know that 😁 where's the foil and the snap?

Poshjock · 14/11/2018 20:11

All the kitkats are in the same aisle in my Asda. On the same shelf. I know this because I meant to buy 2 finger kitkats and picked up chunky which were right next to them on the shelf!

Honeypickle · 14/11/2018 20:27

Penguins!!! Which in heavens name are Penguins???!

Sibsmum · 14/11/2018 21:07

Penguins ( not the flappy fish waters I presume) now I would say definitely biscuit. Can't say why though.
Good point about malteasers, those frys chocolate creams are in foil and multi packed , but chocolate bars. Yes?
Wagon wheels? Twix. ?

Size. The normal 2 or 4 finger KitKat's are a biscuit. The KitKat chunky are bars. Well that's the way I see it.
Wagonwheels would be in the middle because to me they are not a biscuit and not a bar (I don't eat them but they are on the larger side of a biscuit)

neurotransmittens · 14/11/2018 23:33

Penguins are definitely a biscuit here. As are Clubs, Breakaways etc.

Maltesers are chocolate sweets like Minstrals or Revels.

My DC would just love to have KitKat chunkies redefined as biscuits though Grin

applesauce1 · 14/11/2018 23:45

Can it be defined as to how many is acceptable to consume in a single sitting? I.e. one chocolate bar but 2 to 3 biscuits? I'd eat one Snickers in a sitting, but would eat a few hobnobs.

andthelightshoneonandon · 14/11/2018 23:49

Is a Jaffa Cake a biscuit or a cake?

HMRC has even been involved in that question 😂😂😂😂😂😂

NellyTimes · 15/11/2018 00:10

But Kit Kats don't have biscuit in them, why would they be a biscuit?

JovialNickname · 15/11/2018 21:12

The chocolate to biscuit ratio theorem is incorrect, as evidenced by the Choco Leibnitz. Whilst clearly being a massive slab of pure chocolate with a tiny bit of biscuit stuck in it, it is very obviously a chocolate biscuit and not a chocolate bar. Size of chocolatey snack should be the quantifying measure surely

Lucked · 15/11/2018 21:18

If you go by size all fun size bars are biscuits so it doesn’t work.A single twin finger has plenty of biscuit but it will always be a chocolate bar to me.

I am on a diet and this thread is not helping my chocolat cravings

applesauce1 · 15/11/2018 21:27

Wait! I've got it! A chocolate bar is in the shape of a bar and individually wrapped!

halfwitpicker · 15/11/2018 21:28

Interested to hear answers.

AnneOfCleavage · 15/11/2018 21:36

I would say a chocolate bar is an individually wrapped one and a biscuit is part of a packet as a whole.

Dancer12345 · 15/11/2018 21:42

Just done a Google to see if there’s a definitive answer and someone has said that a Twix is technically a millionaire shortbread, which surely counts as a biscuit? Oh my goodness, it’s just too technical! Can’t we just classify them all as “yummy treats”?!

TheLastMermaid · 15/11/2018 21:43

Aren't Penguins officially called 'Penguin biscuits' or is that just a family tradition I didn't realise we had?

And Jaffa cakes are biscuits, don't do this!! Who ever heard of 10 or more flattish cakes being stacked on top of each other and sealed in a biscuit-style wrapper? Biscuits. I don't care what they're called.

JustMarriedBecca · 15/11/2018 21:53

I would say twix, kit kat chunky are biscuits but a lunchbox biscuit rather than a tea biscuit (although are equally good with tea PROVIDING THEY HAVE BEEN FROZEN FIRST).
There is definitely something in the chocolate biscuit to shortbread / biscuit ratio but also a factor of individual wrapping and size of individual item.
Maltesars never a biscuit owing to honeycomb and not biscuit inside.

Deadbudgie · 15/11/2018 21:58

I’d say if a biscuit makes up more than 50% of the make up of the item it’s a biscuit. Much easier to define cakes v biscuits😜

bridgetreilly · 15/11/2018 22:00

I think it's whether the chocolate is just on top (biscuit) or all the way round (chocolate bar). Both sizes of kitkat are chocolate bars imo.

bridgetreilly · 15/11/2018 22:01

But Kit Kats don't have biscuit in them, why would they be a biscuit?

They have wafer in them, which is a kind of biscuit. Like pink wafers, which are definitely biscuits.

bakingdiva · 15/11/2018 22:07

TheLastMermaid HMRC would agree with you, then they could charge VAT on them (chocolate covered biscuits have VAT on them, chocolate covered cakes do not).

Luckily for those of us who are addicted to them, the judge in the case deciding this matter (yes the matter of 'is a Jaffa cake a biscuit or a cake' did actually get decided in court) ruled in favour of it being a cake because the base is made of a sponge cake mixture and they go stale like a cake when left out rather than soggy like a biscuit.

I love the English (and Welsh) legal system 😂

BunsOfAnarchy · 15/11/2018 22:09

No no no. Just no.

Jaffa cakes are NOT biscuits. There is no crunch! Surely to qualify for biscuit status they need to crunch! And crumble...they do neither! (gavel)

They are not a cake either...cant stick a candle in it without it toppling over.

Wtf is are they then? Right, im just gonna have to eat a pack and ill get back to yous!

VelociraptorRex · 15/11/2018 22:15

Kit kat chunky bars are apparently a utensil - I have seen them used as a drinking straw for tea Hmm so that takes them out of the equation and they can be consumed without guilt (you're saving on washing up).

Jaffa cakes though, I think they should be a biscuit - you're allowed to eat more than one biscuit with a brew, but 6 cakes sounds a bit more greedy?
