Nativity play casts kids as slaves - not happy

Flowersintheg5rden · 14/11/2018 15:49

Some of the kids in my children’s school have been cast as slaves in the forthcoming nativity play.

Bearing in mind all the awful reports of modern slavery in the media, am I being unreasonable to feel appalled by this bad choice of play for young minds?

glasgoworrier made my day!!
Is it too late for me to point out the perils of childbirth in 1st century, the likelihood of a 4th degree tear for a virgin birth and that there wouldn't be any animals inside because it was grazing season?
Also, there's no donkey in the Bible story...

"It’s especially useful in introducing Christianity to children who may have missed out on it at home."

What a vulgar comment. How grim.

Nothisispatrick · 14/11/2018 20:09

Missed out on Christianity 😂😂

KatieKittens · 14/11/2018 20:10

Teaching children about slavery doesn’t condone or encourage it anyway. I really don’t understand why you would be appalled.

There is actually a big campaign right now to raise awareness of human trafficking.

StitchingMoss · 14/11/2018 20:11

And Mary made up the whole virgin birth thing to avoid being stoned to death for having sex before marriage. Maybe school should explore that too?

OpiningGambit · 14/11/2018 20:15

I’m less annoyed but I still don’t think kids should be servants either. It’s still linked to modern slavery, in my opinion.

You're gonna hate it when they start doing Shakespeare, then!

You sound bonkers, sorry. Being a servant in a school play is in no way "linked to modern slavery". Quite apart from the fact 2000 years ago isn't exactly 'modern'.

Missed out on Christianity
Again Grin

Aquilla · 14/11/2018 21:40

Wow. Just wow.

Barbie222 · 14/11/2018 21:43

No, I'd have written in a few extra donkeys or something. I think the primary nativity play is actually quite far away from the story of Jesus' birth and should be seen as the thing it really is.

SilverySurfer · 14/11/2018 21:50

I see virtue signalling is still alive and well Hmm YABU OP.

It’s especially useful in introducing Christianity to children who may have missed out on it at home.

This has to be a joke. Most parents spend their time explaining to their children that because they have been taught religious stuff at school doesn't make it true.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 14/11/2018 21:52

AIBU to pissed off that some random relative of DH's has pitched up and given birth to the son of God in my spare room

@Glasgowwarrior yes Yabu because he is not the Messiah but a very naughty boy.

MemoryOfSleep · 14/11/2018 22:06

Should clearly have gone down the Love, Actually route.

'There was more than one lobster present at the birth of Jesus?' Grin

Love that film.

AppleKatie · 14/11/2018 22:25

I’m baffled as to why children shouldn’t be playing slaves tbh.

Leaving aside the issue of whether or not there were any slaves present at the birth of Christ for a minute...

Is there something inherently wrong with children learning about slavery through drama Confused
