AIBU....Postpartum hair loss and fluffy regrowth, can't find anything to help!

Not strictly AIBU but posting for traffic and ideas as I'm all out and getting irrationally annoyed (so probably I'm being U).

I'm 11 months postpartum, EBF DS still feeding every two hours most of the time.

I had lovely hair throughout my pregnancy and it hung in there till 6 months PP then dramatically started falling out as soon as my periods returned. I take a good breast feeding vitamin and try to eat well but am obviously exhausted with a very wakeful DS.

I have two questions wise mumsnetters....

My hair is still falling out, is this still postpartum or more to do with being so run down? What if anything can I do?

On the plus side it is growing back but I've now got an all over floaty halo of regrowth. (Pictures for general amusment) It's bloody awful. I'd happily go for a buzz cut if I thought I could carry it off, but I can't. What on earth can I put on it to tame the fly always without looking greasy?

Thank you Grin

Sounds mad but I use clear mascara brushed on my flyaways works a treat

Also I'd get your thyroid tested

Maursh · 14/11/2018 15:43

Are your iron levels low? I took a good ante Natel supplement with iron but hb still fell.

Choccyhobnob · 14/11/2018 15:45

You are not alone, I know so many people with this post partum baby fringe including me! I never did find anything to really tame it. Sometimes a tiny bit of mousse patted onto dry hair?!

sayanythingelse · 14/11/2018 15:48

Ohh I feel you, I'm almost 11 months PP and I've looked like Hermione and Hagrid's lovechild for as long as I can remember. I used to have such nice hair :(

Not sure about hair loss but I've found serum works wonders for sticky-out bits and flyaways. It doesn't make my hair look greasy either.

AmIRightOrAMeringue · 14/11/2018 15:52

I've got the same, my hair is coloured but the regrowth was too fine to colour so looks like I've got awful roots as well.

Anyway I haven't seemed to have time to tackle it but read hairspray on a toothbrush is meant to help!

Xiaoxiong · 14/11/2018 15:52

My hair did this and also went grey while I was pregnant and to my surprise I found that getting my hair coloured helps. My theory is that the dye weighs the hair shafts down so they have more body to them but I've just made that up and have no idea if it's true.

SoyDora · 14/11/2018 15:54

I’ve had this twice (and pregnant with my third so expecting it all again!) and found the only thing that helped was... time. Unfortunately. I just had to wait it out.

widgetbeana · 14/11/2018 15:58

Get iron levels checked just in case, but generally it's just post partum joy.

I had the fuzzy halo thing badly with my second, just invest in serum, hairspray and hats!

StepAwayFromGoogle · 14/11/2018 16:05

Funny you should post this, OP. I'm sitting at the hairdressers 6 months PP with exactly the same problem. I'm getting my barnet chopped but appreciate that's a bit extreme solution...

Louiselouie0890 · 14/11/2018 16:06

Anemia causes hair loss. Although I'm se on child 3 years on and its still falling out. Went for a Bob as I'd had enough of it

RatRolyPoly · 14/11/2018 16:30

I had the halo too!!

Time. Only time will fix it; sorry. But yeah, iron pills can help if your level are indeed low.

It will go back to normal eventually though, honest!

funnelfanjo · 14/11/2018 16:31

My hairdresser showed me a good trick for the fluffy halo. Spray some hairspray on your brush or comb and immediately brush through the top layers of the affected area. Sticks it down really well and without looking set or hard.

mumto2babyboys · 14/11/2018 16:35

Same thing happened to me. First pregnancy managed to escape it with just minimal loss. When my baby was 4 months suddenly half my hair fell out overnight and by the end of the week It was half the thickness

It's now growing back but I'm left with 2 different hair lengths even after getting it cut short.

Go to a decent hair dresser and ask for layering to try to blend it in

Very rubbish side effect of having a baby that it destroys your body and then...your hair.

NaiceHamPlease · 14/11/2018 20:24

Ahhh thank you everyone, glad it's not just me with a static puff ball head Grin

I'll give the hair stay on the brush a go, every time I've tried any kind of serum it just looks like it's not been washed!

I think my iron should be ok, I had a couple of pretty big bleeds after DS so had two iron infusions and a transfusion plus lots of monitoring after. I've also started eating meat after many years veggie as just could get enough calories in with DS feeding constantly.

Thyroid is interesting, I may investigate it's hard to tell what other symptoms I may have as I'm perpetually exhausted due to the two hourly wakes. Yawn.

A hat 😂 I went for a pixie cut so it all grew back in evenly. Prepare for a lot more to come out when you stop bf.

ReflectionsofParadise · 14/11/2018 20:27

Also at 11m he doesn't need to eat every 2hrs. He should be on 1-2 solids meals a day on top of his milk/boob.

havingabadhairday · 14/11/2018 20:32

I had the same. A decent hair cut helped, shorter than I'd normally have it, but not short short, and then a very light run over with straighteners.

It did take a while to sort itself out though. Worth getting checked for anaemia as well, it didn't help with my hair, but I hadn't realised just how tired I really was until my GP suggested checking my iron levels.
