AIBU to think my dd has a camel bladder?

She's just turned three, initial potty training went ok but we got into a battle of wills about me asking her to do tactical wees like before we leave the house etc and eventually I just decided to relinquish control and let her wee when she wants, now she's reliably dry but it turns out she can hold on forrrrever. She did her first wee at about half 7 this morning, since then we've been out to the shops and been to soft play and come back, I wanted her to wee before her nap so I eventually bribed her with a cheese string to do one at about half one!

CLEARLY she doesn't drink enough water but not sure how to encourage that without flavouring it with squash or something.

But even so that seems like a long time not to see for a toddler! Anyone else have a kid like this?

Yes I do, both my dds have iron clad bladders. Dd1 (now25) didn't go until around lunchtime after last wee from the night before! She was dry in the night at 15 months due to not actually weeing in the night then dry in day around 2. Dd2(nearly10) is the same! Sometimes she won't go until she gets home from school! Since she potty trained she can hold it alllllll day. I have worried about uti s but she's never had any problems like that. However we've had years of problems with stool holding and constipation due to lack of fluid intake but none of the females in our family have ever drunk much so I think that's a hereditary thing, dd2 is now aware of what causes her poo problems and trys to drink more, but she still hardly ever has a wee!

Mine is the same, except she eventually gets really angry because she needs to wee and is feeling so uncomfortable, so if we haven't persuaded her before that stage it gets very fraught! But I dont think she drinks that little and doesnt get constipated, so no idea how she manages to hold it in so long. She's been like that since finishing toilet training- now she's just turned 4 she is getting more reasonable, so there is hope!

Ds has been dry at night since 4 (now 7). He goes to bed at 8, wakes up at 7.30ish and has been known to wait until 10ish for a morning pee. No idea how.

ginnybag · 14/11/2018 15:46

Yep, both my DD and I.

We can go hours, including first thing in the morning.

CoperCabana · 14/11/2018 15:56

My DD2 is the same. She can literally hold it all day at school! I guess I am similar really (and have never had a UTI touch wood at nearly 50).

My dd started toilet training at 2 yrs old, her choice not mine, she spoke clearly and understands everything. She was dry at night after a month of training. Since March she has been holding wee from 3pm to the following morning at 7am, and still dry at night. On the odd occasion she will wake me at night to go wee. Iv given up asking her to wee on demand. She is 3 tomorrow

My Eldest will only ever wee twice a day. Ever since he potty trained some time before turning 3. Once he forgot to wee in the morning and went 24 hours without going (I was really worried he'd get a bladder infection after that one and have made sure he goes before school).

Took me by surprise when my youngest was potty training that she'd actually need to go every few hours or might suddenly need a wee when out. Lots of mad dashes into random restaurant bath rooms with wiggly toddler!

My DD is coming up for 11, she’s exactly like this, we even call her camel bladder. Like pps she was dry at night before 2, can go all day without weeing. She’s never drunk much, pretty much a water refuser until she got old enough to be bargained with and even then she only has a few sips, never bothers to take water to school anymore either. She’s had one UTI but children I know who chug down water have had UTIs too.

Petitepamplemousse · 14/11/2018 16:17

Although squash isn’t great I think it is better for her to drink some liquids than not enough. A few drops of sugar free squash or diluted juice won’t do any harm and may encourage more drinking.

Hidingtonothing · 14/11/2018 16:21

Yes! DD(10) is exactly like this, can easily go til lunchtime from the night before, in sharp contrast to me who needs to pee the second I'm awake, damn you pelvic floor Angry She drinks plenty and is in a fairly good 'routine' otherwise but it's more habit (and me reminding her to go) than that she actually needs to go. It's good to know she's not the only one tbh, I get a lot of uti's so I worry she doesn't go enough and it might cause her problems.

chocahoop · 14/11/2018 17:56

Well thanks for your replies I'm glad it's not just my dd! Every time I go to the loo I ask her if she wants to go and it's made me realise how much I go during the day Grin.

She is also always dry overnight even though we still put a nappy on her for some reason, might aswell stop that and help the environment a bit!

My dd17 has always been like that. My ds was peeing constantly when potty training but it was completely different with dd.
She spent a week in hospital when she was 3 and they were monitoring her weeing. I told them that she never weed much but they were saying 'but she must wee regularly'. Don't know how they thought I could make that happen.
