Gets of soapbox

They've been around for at least 10 years now. The 'real' ones don't collapse at the back. I love mine.

JoyceTempleSavage · 14/11/2018 20:44

unless you are:
under 25 sitting an exam during winter visibly ill and in a super market/pharmacy nearest to your house buying stuff clearly associated with your illness
staying in the car

But I have socks and adidas sliders already for this purpose

Haffiana · 14/11/2018 20:45

Costco - I think you can buy them online even if you are not a member by paying a bit extra. They are proper sheepskin, and yes, as a pp says they are closer to Emus, but are still good quality.

I would avoid anything that is not sheepskin/shearling because it will make your feet stink!

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT uggs aren’t shoes. They’re slippers. Please do wear them outdoors. It’s very embarrassing

Who gives a shit, frankly.

Haffiana · 14/11/2018 20:46

All the broken heel or slouchy stretched Uggs are fakes.

There used to be hundreds of them about - I think the whole Ugg hate thing comes from those.

Mine aren't. Did you buy yours in Primark and think you have the real thing?

Ktay · 14/11/2018 20:51

Thank you @catcoriander and @racecardriver

nancybelle · 14/11/2018 20:55

Brand alley have uggs much cheaper than usual. Personally I think they are hideous and should only be used as slippers but if you like them brand alley is the place to go.

UpstartCrow · 14/11/2018 20:57

What are the soles like on the newest Uggs? I've seen some that look like memory foam so I'm not convinced they're genuine.

Racecardriver · 14/11/2018 22:53

@haffiana Hmm I’m Australian, they don’t have primarks there. Ugg do do shoes but traditional uggs have been slippers for ever.

sweetkitty · 14/11/2018 22:59

I love mine. I have fibromyalgia and Raynauds my feet are constantly cold and achey Uggs keep them warm.

LockedOutOfMN · 14/11/2018 23:03

Mango has good Ugg type boots. They look good and feel good but won't last as long as Uggs.

PrimalLass · 14/11/2018 23:17

traditional uggs have been slippers for ever.

And outdoor boots in other countries for at least 10 years.

Haffiana · 14/11/2018 23:38

The only Australian thing about Uggs is the name which was used in Oz to describe sheepskin surfer boots.

Uggs (TM) are owned by Decker and are an American brand. Yes, they took an Australian name. There are more than a few copycat Australian brands selling sheepskin boots that claim to be the 'real originals' or somesuch. Most look shite tbf. There is a British company, Celtic, claiming the same thing (or it was last time I looked). Their boots are not bad at all but are almost the same sort of price as real Uggs, and do not quite have the Ugg styling.

I have several pairs of Uggs. I even have a very old pair that were actually manufactured in Australia (no idea why Decker had them made there), but all the rest are made in China. Most have a proper grippy, cleated sole. About half are sheepskin-lined leather or nubuck - ankle and biker boots. Most are completely waterproof - I usually choose those.

The other real plus point of Uggs over other brands is that they are not fat and clumpy looking. They have a good boot shape. I don't like the look of Emus for example, they are just too big and puffy on the foot. Bearpaws are a good shape but are made of cow suede and usually lined with nylon fur = smelly feet.

Most of the TKMaxx copies are not real shearling inside. Some are just on the top part, but not inside. And they are too expensive for a boot that will only last a few months - Primark would be a better option.

Some are good though - check carefully. The heel needs to be hard and rigid to stop the foot sliding around inside as this stretches the delicate sheepskin = that appalling walking on the side of the boot thing that you get with fake Uggs.

I buy Uggs mostly in the sales at Ugg uk and at Office or John Lewis. The reason that they are worth the price is that they keep their shape, they keep their looks, they last forever, and they are extremely comfortable. I put them on the Autumn, and take them off in the Spring.

BruegeITheElder · 14/11/2018 23:50

This thread title is quite misleading. If you don't have an Ugg budget, then you can't buy any Uggs, surely?

Jack65 · 15/11/2018 00:00

Actually that isn't right. In Australia, Ugg is a style and type of boot. Decker took legal action and if my memory serves me correctly, because it is a type and style of boot available by quite a few manufacturers in Aus, they lost in Aus. So there are more than one manufacturer in Aus and Decker do not have the monopoly. My boots were made in Aus and are better quality than Deckers. Typical US trying to rule the world . . ..

sollyfromsurrey · 15/11/2018 07:27

Regular Uggs don't have the traditional shearling anymore. They now have something they call "Ugg Pure". It's basically sheep wool that has been bonded into a backing. It used to be that the suede in the outside was the same piece as the fur on the inside. Now they use cheaper manufacturing methods. They say it is to keep the quality consistent but in reality it is because they used to have to use good quality skins. Now they just use any old suede, shear off the wool and bond artificially stick on wool in the inside. Quality is nothing like it used to be. As for 10 year.... they have been around for more like 40 years.

Alltootrue2u · 15/11/2018 07:34

I have 4 pairs of UGGs. 3 x long suede and 1 x leather biker style boots. I tend to buy mine when I’m in the states and they last a good 3-4 years with a lot of use.

I know they are marmite as in love or hate but I love mine and don’t care what other people think Smile

lazymare · 15/11/2018 09:41

As for 10 year.... they have been around for more like 40 years.

But have been 'fashion' boots for around 10 years.

PumpkinKitty82 · 15/11/2018 10:25

The only thing I can add is that the really cheap uggs you can buy online and in the cheaper high street shops are sometimes made from raccoon dog fur which is barbaric .
On another note , I have lots of pairs of uggs , they’re not “slippers” (although I do have a pair that are ) as they’re meant to be worn outside in all weathers as the sheepskin regulates the temp of your feet although you’re not supposed to wear socks with them but I couldn’t bare the thought of wearing them without socks !

AdobeWanKenobi · 15/11/2018 10:30

As for 10 year.... they have been around for more like 40 years

I seem to recall reading WWII Pilots wore a variation of them to keep their feet warm at altitude so longer than that.

Amuses me that this is done every year, quite why someone feels the need to click on a thread just to tell people they don't like their choices baffles me.

sollyfromsurrey · 15/11/2018 11:59

But have been 'fashion' boots for around 10 years. gonna be pedantic here but they have been around for about 40 years and gained 'fashion status around 20 years ago. If you started wearing them 10 years ago then you were kind of late to the trend! They have been in fashion Siberia for about a decade but have just this season threatened to make a comeback with a couple of 'slebs seen wearing them and a few designers showing 'ironic' versions on the catwalk....pedantic, I said it first!

namechangeninetynine · 15/11/2018 12:05

I think I might go for Skechers after seeing them recommended on this thread but I have really wide calves... anyone know if you're not skinny of leg if they have enough room?

Birdsgottafly · 15/11/2018 12:25

"Cant see the point of paying £45 for faux when you can get genuine sheepskin for the same price"

Because the technology does the same job without the animal welfare concerns.

I have foot problems and need absolute flats to walk far. I like to do at least 14000 steps, mainly outdoors.

Uggs (I was given a pair) and Sketchers are the only boots that I can wear, unless I'm doing very little walking.

Mine do go over on one side, because that's how I walk, but because the boot goes to your shape etc, they are comfortable.

Racecardriver, you embarrass yourself on every thread. Ugg is a generic word for Slippers. UGG boots, are boots.

lazymare · 15/11/2018 12:31

Oh well Solly, time flies when you've got cosy feet. My point was that for the last x years they have been sold as outdoor footwear and as a fashion item. Not slippers or for surfers to pull on when they are cold.
