To warn people about Australian website Mamamia ripping off posts?

Everyone talks about how the Daily Mail uses Mumsnet posts as the basis for "articles", but Australian website Mamamia is at least as prolific. In the last month ALONE Mamamia has written articles based on the following Mumsnet threads:

  • CaptainCabinet's post about the spelling 'Pheobe'
  • BackToBeingMe's post about lunch box police
  • Cringing123's post about dressing up nicely in bed
  • WigglyBraddin's post about the man who was only attracted to slim women
  • Rosskidsmum's post about wearing a cream shirt to a wedding
  • BearProblem's post about custody of the teddy bear
  • NordicNobody's post about the initials LIAR
  • ReiofHope's post about baby's nickname
There's probably nothing we can do (@MNHQ?) but just wanted to make this known.

The skincare brand? That's really odd... Hmm

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/11/2018 11:25

Why would you warn people. What`s the danger?

Hundredacrewoods · 14/11/2018 11:31

No, not a skincare brand, it's a women's website similar to Mumsnet.

I’m in Australia and I’ve noticed this as well. Not with Mamamia as I don’t look at that website but 9honey (I think it’s called 🤨) and even just random radio stations 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hundredacrewoods · 14/11/2018 11:33

I know there's no danger, but it irritates me that this third party is profiting from retelling Mumsnet posts and calling it journalism.

OP posts:
llangennith · 14/11/2018 11:38

What profit are they making?🤔
Why does it bother you?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/11/2018 11:42

Given that Mumsnet is UK based and very few users would have heard of mamamia; are you trying to drive traffic towards it?

ginghamstarfish · 14/11/2018 12:06

It's lazy and dishonest but I don't think you can 'own' the content of a public forum. I see this all the time if I look up a recipe or suchlike - identical content on blogs etc. People are just idle and if it's easy to steal others' content and make money off it then that's what will happen.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/11/2018 12:15

Anything published here should be the IP of Mumsnet (and if it isn't it is the IP of the poster).

So technically, yes you could do something about it, however in reality it would be expensive and probably futile.

Hundredacrewoods · 14/11/2018 19:37

@llangennith The profit comes from advertising revenue that is based on traffic.

ElideLochan · 14/11/2018 19:58

Never heard of it

Not my problem

Hundredacrewoods · 16/11/2018 06:06

One of the Sydney radio stations was regurgitating one of the CF threads a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't believe it. I recognised the content immediately (bad MN habit). But it wasn't attributed to MN, it was as if the situation related to a Sydneysider.

MrsTerryPratcett · 16/11/2018 06:21

So?

RumerGodden · 16/11/2018 06:28

THe other mummsy site in Australia - Essential Baby, used to get their writers to pose as "research students" and ask for mums' opinions on things and then quote them in articles and turn the whole thread into a story. They lifted things out of relationships a few times putting vulnerable women in danger, despite repeated complaints from posters.

There was a bit of a stoush about it when they did it yet again- they claimed it was a naive new writer (although still doesn't explain the false persona and pretending to be a student) - when I looked her up on LinkedIn she had a decade of journalism under her belt!

I asked for them to apologize, suggested they post a clear message when their journos started threads as a way of drumming up content rather than assuming fake identities, and posted the journalistic code of ethics and suggested they get their writers to review. No apology (esp from the seasoned journalist!), aggression from the moderation team and membership banned!

Not surprising given the state of journalism in Australia, but the deception was pretty unpleasant. Too many mummy bloggers pretending to be real journos and having trouble making content.

ChantillyLaceAverageFace · 16/11/2018 06:29

You should expect that anything written in a PUBLIC forum, to reach absolutely anywhere.
Hence why we don't give our full names and addresses when posting.

starzig · 16/11/2018 06:32

No different to speaking to someone and quoting their words or quoting what was said at a conference. These types of extracts have always been used whether it is a serious topic or light hearted article.

Heuschrecke · 16/11/2018 06:40

This is what it says on MN's FAQs, so MN can't stop any media lifting content.

Mamamia is a trash site

Gnuggers · 16/11/2018 06:49

Ugh, I’m Australian and definitely not a mamamia fan, in particular Mia Freedman :(

I found mumsnet via an article in my local news some time ago, can’t even remember what it was about now?!

lovetherisingsun · 16/11/2018 06:52

Meh. Who cares.

RoseAndRose · 16/11/2018 06:55

Do remember to use 90 Days (or even 30 Days) for chatter that you don't want to hang around to be mined.

OliviaStabler · 16/11/2018 06:58

Mumsnet is not a private forum or chat room. Whether you like it or not, people can easily access the content here and it is a quick and easy way to pick up a topic for a story for a newspaper or a radio phone in.

ElideLochan · 16/11/2018 07:14

@Hundredacrewoods but it's not my problem is it? It's an anonymous forum, that you're not forced to use. If you don't want your story in a journo rag, don't put it on the internet

Fairylea · 16/11/2018 07:16

I think considering this is mainly a UK site people are far more worried about their threads appearing in the Daily Mail as people they know are more likely to read it. No one will of heard of the other one.
