Taking baby to doctors when probably not needed?

Will try and keep this as short as possible.

At 20 week scan, baby had echogenic bowel. This cleared up but caused us a lot of worry. We were told we would need to be checked by baby doctors after the birth. This never happened.

Baby is 3.5 weeks old. Pooing a bit less than usual but has bad wind (can hear it in his belly), throwing head back and crying for a few seconds then stopping intermittently, moaning a lot and showing signs of being in distress. It's likely reflux or trapped wind, but I've got in the back of my head that it's to do with the scan finding and there's something wrong.

WIBU to go to docs for this? For peace of mind? To ensure he's okay?

I'm very anxious and not one to waste GPs time but can't get this one off my brain...

Go.
It might be nothing, but you'll be glad you checked.

Darfally · 14/11/2018 01:52

Didn't realise it's nearly 2am! Maybe I'll bump in the morning for responses. Oops!

@Firstbornunicorn it's really hard. Can't just ask him what's wrong but don't want to be that mum who worries about ridiculous stuff...

3.5 week old baby... go for any niggle that worries you

4 year old child... consider if colds are appropriate to use NHS resources for

3.5 week old though... just go

Shriek · 14/11/2018 01:56

Yes, go. He's in pain, needs something
The doctors would want you to bring him to be checked over. You can hear it! Make sure you remind them of the bowel condition to get an explanation if nothing else

Darfally · 14/11/2018 01:57

Thanks both.

It was explained to us that the bowel thing was likely nothing but it's in the back of my mind...

Much better to go to the doctor when it might be nothing than to not go when it might be something. The doctor will feel like this too, especially when the patient is a 3.5 week old baby. Call them in the morning.

don't want to be that mum who worries about ridiculous stuff...

Your baby depends on you. Don't worry about your image.

@moredoll Your baby depends on you. Don't worry about your image.

I feel like this is good advice. Thank you. It's hard to know what's right and wrong and I worry that anxiety will clear my judgement.

Sorry! But that's the state of being a new DM! Wink

moredoll · 14/11/2018 02:21

I'm glad you find it helpful. I think it's difficult to see things clearly when you're a first time mum suffering from sleep deprivation and everything is new. Mention the scan and the fact that the baby has not yet been seen.
I hope all is well with your little one.

Oct18mummy · 14/11/2018 02:23

Yes go. He is so little and you need your mind put to rest. Good luck hope he gets better soon

Seeingadistance · 14/11/2018 02:28

When my DS was little my GP said to me that he would always prefer to see a baby which was well than have a mother sitting at home worried about her baby.

MumInBrussels · 14/11/2018 02:43

If you're worried, see a doctor. I know NHS resources are tight, but I'm sure they can stretch to a visit to check your 3 week old baby is ok - it's much better to go in and find out it's nothing than to sit at home worrying anyway and later find out it's something serious that needed sorting out as soon as possible. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it turns out to be nothing serious - and if that's the case, don't feel you've wasted anyone's time, you're still learning how your baby works too and you'll know a bit more in case they're like this again!

SeaToSki · 14/11/2018 02:49

You were told he would need to be checked after birth. So go in and advocate for him being checked. It wasnt mentioned as an after thought. He needs it.

You really know you are a proper real mother when you have to advocate for your child for the first time.

WishfulSprouts · 14/11/2018 02:51

Definitely go op at 3.5 weeks old this needs checking out.

Darfally · 14/11/2018 02:54

Really hope it's just a bit of trapped wind. Thanks all. Hope none of you have to be up for work tomorrow!

Definitely go, FIL is a GP and used to tell me to pop in to our GP with the baby if worried when ours were small, he said any GP worth their salt would rather send away a now happier parent saying her/his child is fine than let a parent worry unnecessarily for goodness knows how long .... so just make that appointment and go!

Btw mine had awful wind and that sounds familiar - speak to your HV about tummy massage classes for your baby, they can help

KTD27 · 14/11/2018 03:47

Also video him doing it - if he is anything like both of mine he will be sleeping like an angel when you’re there and it’s always better to show rather than tell!

Bibijayne · 14/11/2018 04:33

Have you been discharged by the midwife yet? If not, you may be able to go direct to the obstetric assesment unit at your local hospital.

Shriek · 14/11/2018 21:46

How did you get on? @darfally
