To ask any French speaker how I should address this email?

Long story short. Just about to apply for a job (as many of you might know from my previous threads this is my favourite activity the past few weeks months)
Anyway I am not sure how to address the email to a hiring manager who is French. I know her name so it starts
'Dear Ms. ' but her name is bloody long and I don't speak French and it has a 'de' in in too and not sure if it should be included.
So basically her name is similar too
Elizabeth-May de Smith Johns

How do I address this email ?

Hope this makes sense. I just want to send it tonight then have a large glass of wine 😂

I would say that "de" is part of her surname and should be included. Like Amande de Cadenet, I'd address her as Ms de Cadenet.

How did she address you? If she used your first name, return the honour. Otherwise Ms de Smith Johns.

MumInBrussels · 13/11/2018 18:42

I'm not a native speaker, but if you're worried you might get it wrong, I reckon it's totally ok to just start with "Madame", rather than using her name.

But based on what you say her name is, I think she's Madame de Smith Jones. (The de is part of the surname, as I understand it.)

MumInBrussels · 13/11/2018 18:44

Never mind. My brain is dead. I thought you were writing in French! Dear Ms de Smith Jones, not Madame.

tattychicken · 13/11/2018 18:44

Not Madame. That assumes she's older and/or married. Neither of which you know. Ms is fine.

ScandiGirl10 · 13/11/2018 18:45

Depends on the company but I think addressing someone as “Mr” “Mrs” in a work scenario is pretty old school / a bit odd. Unless they have addressed you in the same manor first.

Ancienchateau · 13/11/2018 18:46

Are you sure she's a Ms because it's always okay to address a woman as Madame in French? As others have said call her Madame/Ms de Smith Johns. Always better to be formal with French people you don't know.

Ancienchateau · 13/11/2018 18:49

If she's French but working in a UK company in the UK then just address her as you would any other potential female employer.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 18:57

Is it always okay to address a woman as Mme in French? I didn't notice that when I lived there - admittedly a looong time ago!

makingmammaries · 13/11/2018 20:13

Yes, unless you know for a fact that she is both young and unmarried.

SweetestThing · 13/11/2018 20:26

To be fair, when I lived in France it was well before the days of email :)
