According to DD1 I'm "too old" to wear pink over-the-head headphones?!

What the hell. I'm 43?? Apparently I can't borrow her pink and white headphones (the over-the-head type ones, they're lush, she got them last week) because I'm too old. Is this a thing? I pointed out to her that Dr. Dre is 53. Somehow that didn't change her mind.

They're squashy and super comfy on the ear, not like those nasty hard wedge in the ear ones you get with your phone. Those pop out when I'm running too. Am I actually too old though? I loved them. I was going to buy myself a pair. Now I'm wracked with self doubt.

I think the "too old" bit translates as: she only got them last week, so hands off, Mum!

You're too old to be told what colour of headphones you're "allowed" to wear - especially by your own child!

goose1964 · 13/11/2018 11:06

My son told me I was too old to wear a mid thigh length dress, and I needed to wear opaque tights or leggings with it

hotham26 · 13/11/2018 11:06

Ugh. who knew it would happen so fast. I used to be "cool", I'm sure of it.

"You're too old to be told what colour of headphones you're "allowed" to wear - especially by your own child!"

Yes. Maybe I'll get my own just to really, really wind her up. Is that too evil? Sounds like anything I do now will be mortifying so I may as well embrace it.

She’s your child, she is meant to think your too old for everything becuase your 43 and to her you are ancient!

Your never too old for pink so she’s clearly unreasonable, buy a pair of the headphones........

hotham26 · 13/11/2018 11:11

You are not bu to want to wear pink headphones. But you are bu to refer to them as lush and super comfy.

wonkylegs · 13/11/2018 11:15

My toilet training 2 yo has declared that mummy is too old to use 'his' toilet - funnily enough I laugh and carry on.

I suspect that if they are brand new she mainly doesn't want to share - any chance you could get the same comfortable ones in a different colour so there is a difference between 'hers' & 'yours'

Tattletale · 13/11/2018 11:24

My daughter is 10 and tells me I'm too old for certain things. I'm only 38!! If you like the headphones, go for it. Unfortunately when you are a teenager, you think being in your 40's is ancient as it is such a long way away for them.

scaryteacher · 13/11/2018 11:27

I have bright red Sennheisers, which i have to guard jealously as dh and ds (who both have their own sets of headphones) use mine. I've had them since I was 50....

Summerisdone · 13/11/2018 11:35

She's a teenager, anyone and everyone (except for celebs deemed 'cool') over the age of 25 is too old to a teen.
My 15 yr old sisters tell me I'm too old for all kinds of things... the other week I was too old to be wearing Dr Martens boots and to be shopping in H&M apparently... I'm 28! HmmGrin

I do agree with PPs that suggest it could also be something to do with not wanting to share her new headphones, so I reckon you buy your own and then you can use them whenever you like anyway rather than having to fit around when she's not using them.

ethelfleda · 13/11/2018 11:39

Of course you’re not too old. And extra kudos for comparing yourself to Dre Grin

CookPassBabtridge · 13/11/2018 11:42

To her you are too old. In general, you're never too old! It's just a teen embarrassment thing, they don't want to wear the same stuff as their mum! Grin Get your own in a bright colour OP.

SpoonBlender · 13/11/2018 12:00

I always find repeating "Why?" good in these situations. Heh heh heh heh heh. Take that taste of your own medicine, kid!

hotham26 · 13/11/2018 12:47

@spoonblender this is genius

It's pretty mean to make her share something special to her which she only got last week, and headphones are vaguely personal, in the way clothing is.

I suspect "you're too old" was a failure to articulate/ fear of articulating "no, they're mine and only mine and I don't want to share". She probably won't mind you getting your own.

My dd and I have the same age gap and she likes us having the same things - but I would bever expect to borrow her shoes or whatever despite being the same size. I suspect that headphones falk into the same category - they're not a shared possession in our house any more than jumpers/ coats/ shoes are.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/11/2018 13:03

My dad is adamant that the best part of being a parent is when you can be an embarrassment to your kids instead of the other way round!

hotham26 · 13/11/2018 13:05

@blueskiesandforests you're right. I think I just had that first horrific realisation that I'm no longer her idol, I'm just "past it". We've always been a very "share-y" family, that's all. I'm not going to nab them now she's told me not to though. boundaries respected and all that.

My daughter told me not to show her up in front of her friends. I turned up to collect her from holiday club wearing a mrs Santa hat complete with long white plaits.

I also walked home from a work fundraiser with my hair in huge bunches with bright pink ribbon bows.

Actually, I'm beginning to think that she had a point... Wink

scaryteacher · 13/11/2018 13:28

hotham Mine are Sennheiser Momentum, looks like they don't do them any more. They have a red suede top and apart from the silver on the band by the ears, they are all red, including the ear pads inside. I love them, when i can wrest them away from dh, who is too idle to find his own set.

hotham26 · 13/11/2018 21:00

@scaryteacher they do indeed sound lushhhhhh (sorry @bobstersmum) these are the ones I wanted, they're £5 off at Argos now too but I think I'll have to look at the blue ones instead to avoid further drama !!
