Teenager vaping

Sv2004 · 12/11/2018 19:05

I’ve found out my DD is vaping, she is 14. It is liquid with no nicotine.
I’ve obviously threatened to not give her the vape back but she says she needs it as she is stressed. She is currently under CAMHS for some emotional issues so this decision seems even harder. I just honestly don’t know what to do. Has anyone else experienced this and have any advice?

If it's helping with her stress what's the problem?

NotSoThinLizzy · 12/11/2018 19:12

Talk to her about the dangers of vaping compared to not doing it at all. And talk to her about not ever going onto the nicotine ones it'll be so much harder to quit then. If you don't give her it back she'll get another. I'm in two minds about the stress thing or if it's just because it the "in" thing just now

Sv2004 · 12/11/2018 19:15

I guess it's because I don't want her causing any long term damage or even starting smoking later in life. There would be plenty of people who don't agree with it (me included), but she got really upset when I said I wouldn't give it her back, (apparently she used her own money to buy it, someone else bought it on her behalf).

I agree @NotSoThinLizzy, she does say a lot of people at school do it, although not her direct friends. I believe she would get another. I have talked to her about the dangers extensively, she appears to understand etc Confused I'm just at a loss as where to go with it all Sad

i vape, i used to smoke 15 a day and managed to quit by vaping and have been vaping for 3 years, if the liquid has no nicotine in it which more than likely wont unless your dd is purchasing nicotine shots to mix into the liquid then i dont see the harm, just make sure she isnt carrying spare batteries loose in her pockets with keys or loose change etc and that she knows what shes doing, its only when your stupid that vaping causes accidents

TheRenegadeMaster · 12/11/2018 19:33

If it's helping her with stress then I sympathise. However, it's very easy to switch to the nicotine ones, and I would be worried that she could try nicotine liquid and become addicted as it obviously is a better stress reliever than the 0MG liquids.

Foamybanana93 · 12/11/2018 19:34

you can only buy liquid with 0mg of nicotine now, you have to buy nicotine shots separately and mix them yourself

kimlo · 12/11/2018 19:39

you can buy liquid with nicotine in, it's only when the bottles are over a cerrain size that you have to add your own nicotine.

Foamybanana93 · 12/11/2018 19:53

cant buy any bottles with nic, all have 0 nic no matter the size and you have to add your own, it was the tpd rules

Ginmakesitallok · 12/11/2018 19:55

Foamybanana, you've misunderstood the tpd. You can most definitely still but vape liquid with nicotine in it.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 12/11/2018 19:56

I bought liquid with nicotine this weekend. Mine is low strength (6mg) but they had up to 24mg available. Have the laws changed since saturday?

DrunkenUnicorn · 12/11/2018 19:57

You absolutely can buy small premade bottles.

makingmiracles · 12/11/2018 19:59

@foamybanana93 you absolutely can buy flavoured eliquid with nicotine in from 0-18mg of nicotine

NotSoThinLizzy · 12/11/2018 20:09

Also watch out for the latest cbd oil while it dosent get you high it's still almost like saying cannabis is ok mabye that's reaching 🤷‍♀️ there's not a lot you really can do I'm afraid. Tell her to avoid the buttery flavoured ones as they are the ones more likely to cause popcorn lung.

Sv2004 · 12/11/2018 20:44

Ok thanks for the heads up

I think it is unfortunate that a seeningly large amount of people believe that E-cigarettes and vaping is safe.

While it is indeed true that vaping is 'safer' than smoking traditional tabaco products, I would hardly call them safe. They really haven't been around long enough to determine just how dangerous they are, but already early research has demonstrated that they are indeed harmful.

They often contian Diacetyl, a chemical used for flavouring which has been linked to causing serious diseases of the lungs, among many others.

You have my sympathies though, I don't think it will be easy to get her to stop.

ARhythmlessMan · 12/11/2018 20:54

They often contain Diacetyl....
Utter ignorant bullshit (popcorn lung) "diacetyl is banned as an ingredient from e-cigarettes and e-liquids in the UK. It had been detected in some e-liquid flavourings in the past, but at levels hundreds of times lower than in cigarette smoke. Even at these levels, smoking is not a major risk factor for this rare disease."
Here's Public Health England on some myths which twats like to spread around publichealthmatters.blog.gov.uk/2018/02/20/clearing-up-some-myths-around-e-cigarettes/
No evidence vaping leads to smoking but obviously better not to vape at all.

MeredithGrey1 · 12/11/2018 21:01

Sorry I know this isn’t the point but I’ve never smoked or vaped and I’m confused. Why would you vape without nicotine? Is it enjoyable in some other way aside from the nicotine?

Ginmakesitallok · 12/11/2018 21:03

Why let a good story get in the way of the truth eh Jamieson90???

NotSoThinLizzy · 12/11/2018 21:58

Fun fact diacetyl is found in most butter flavoured marg and other spreads 😊 but saying that I think the point is that it's better not to vape at all.

agirlhasnonameX · 12/11/2018 22:04

I don't necessarily think it will lead to her smoking OP and it's good news that she isn't and that she's not using nicotine (make double sure she isn't).
One of my friends has vaped for years, long before they became popular. He has never smoked a cigarette, he hates them and has never used nicotine in his vape.
It's not ideal, but if it's causing a lot of issues and she's already having problems I'd let her have it, if you took it away she'd probably just get another one or start with cigarettes to get her stress relief and obviously that would be far far worse.

Jamieson90 · 13/11/2018 07:48

I don't understand, are you claiming vaping isn't harmful?

ThePants999 · 13/11/2018 08:47

Fun fact diacetyl is found in most butter flavoured marg and other spreads 😊

Sure, but you don't inhale margarine...

Junkmail · 13/11/2018 09:03

Is vaping harmful? I’ve seen no conclusive evidence. I mostly smoke but I do sometimes vape if the mood takes me.

OP I don’t think this is anything to get too worked up over. Teenagers are frequently stressed and frequently experimenting. Check that the liquid she is using is nicotine free so that she doesn’t accidentally develop an addiction. As long as she isn’t vaping nictotine then this is likely a passing fad. There’s nothing addictive in the flavoured liquids and she’s unlikely to cause any damage to herself in the short term. She’s also unlikely to start smoking because of it. I don’t even think smoking is that cool amongst kids anymore? I’m a mature student so mix with younger people regularly and the consensus amongst them seems to be that smoking is becoming old fashioned but obviously this is a small sample size so not conclusive.
