To ask you if I have committed libel?

Long term poster, NC'd as I'd rather not out myself and link username here to username elsewhere

I don't really understand libel (which I think I should if I'm going to use social media and be angry on it)

How do you express anger at an individual in the public eye for things that are in the public domain but are also your personal views e.g. You say they have been abusive to someone (and believe that by what they've done which is known publicly) but someone else might not agree (particularly them)

Wondering if despite being a miniscule fish on twitter I've actually been a bit dumb with a tweet and should swiftly delete it despite firmly believing in what I have said

Won't post the tweet but would be very grateful to know if I'm being a fool to leave up a tweet

If I'm right about what you were tweeting about (I think AF and I have had the same hunch) others can judge how strong your reaction might have been. <a class="break-all" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150919094216/www.petertatchell.net/lgbt_rights/age_of_consent/14-gay-boyfriend.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Here's a link to the article, still on PT's website. When I read it today I could hardly believe my eyes that anybody could miss the obvious safeguarding and child sexual exploitation issues here.

Sorry, I see now the link I've given is to the Internet Wayback Machine and I think the article may now have been deleted from PT's website.

Few believed his excuses back then, iirr, except die-hard fans. I lived not v far from him, had friends who worked with him or inhabited the same world. No one was surprised at the newss, more were astonished it went nowhere.

Aaaaand another clarification! It is still there. www.petertatchell.net/lgbt_rights/age_of_consent/im-14-im-gay-i-want-a-boyfriend/

Jux · 12/11/2018 16:53

What's Danny from Strictly done? Misses point of thread

SassitudeandSparkle · 12/11/2018 17:07

No, to be fair she didn't use the term abusive about her own tweet, just 'less nice language' and said she was expressing her anger. I assumed it wasn't a measured response Grin

Basically libel is malicious and untrue with the intent to damage someone's reputation. To cause them harm.

If you make a statement about someone that is true and can be proven as true, that is not libelous. Public figures are fair game.

The above is based on basic U.S. law but I believe it's the same there.

It's really hard to sue someone for defamation/libel/slander here.

VerbeenaBeeks · 12/11/2018 20:17

No idea what this is about, but you think you may have committed libel on one social media forum so run to another social media to spread it more?
Erm, yeah, that's not bright. Especially when people start speculating and you start saying that one of them might be the one.
You're obviously being clear enough to some to be able to identify.
If you think you're being libellous, just delete it.
