Neighbour Noise

Is it U to really get hacked off with every day noise from next door? We live in a pair of semi-detached bungalows and theirs has a very badly converted loft, so that all their downstairs noise finds its way upstairs and then back down again through to ours. When they go up their 1970's style open plan wooden stair case, it's like someone is climbing the stairs in our house.

It really is like two other people live in our house but we can't see them. Constant TV noise as the wife is slightly hard of hearing. Football on, any game, all through the season.

In our bedroom, the wife coughs so much all the time that again it is like having someone coughing in our own room. As a result we don't DTD much and when we do we rival church mice. It's kind of like sex-with-your-bf-at-your-parents.

When their grandchildren stay over you'd think elephants were going up and down the stairs.

The thing is though, what can you actually DO? Bloody nothing really! We creep around in our own house. We plan when to DTD around their holidays ffs!! It's insane.

That is insane. If their telly is up that loud I doubt they would hear you. Just crack on

AntiHop · 11/11/2018 22:11

I'm lying in bed right now hearing my neighbour's TV from their lounge downstairs. We've not been here long but we plan to strip the walls, improve the mortar in the bricks, replaster and put a sound proofing layer in.

EwItsAHooman · 11/11/2018 22:12

Do they know how noisy it is? It's possible they're not aware of it and haven't realised that it's affecting you so much. Could you invite one of them over to have a listen? Obviously would only work if you're on friendly enough terms to be able to raise it with them.

Your other option would be to contact environmental health at the council as they deal with noise issues and will be able to advise you on where you stand. They can assess the noise levels and if it meets certain parameters they can take enforcement action (e.g., compelling the neighbours to install soundproofing).

Soundproofing? I’d have to move or sleep in my car, as have sensory issues and couldn’t put up with that shit.

Or white noise machine? Headphones?

EwItsAHooman · 11/11/2018 22:12

And don't live like church mice, love your life normally and stop tiptoeing around them.

Oh no, she's in bed 10pm on the dot, husband blares the tv out from the lounge, so I have that in one ear and her coughing in the other. And she coughs all bloody night, to the point that I am worried for her health. They always say when they're going away, which thankfully is quite a lot. Then it definitely is 'crack on' time!

The coughing is such a passion killer. Htf would you even go about phrasing that!! No wonder people want to live in detached houses.

I don't know what you can do about it op, it doesn't sound like it's their fault if it's just normal noise like walking up stairs and coughing etc carrying to your house...

Have they ever mentioned that they can hear noise from your home?

SunflowerJo08 · 11/11/2018 22:15

We are starting a programme of works next year to become soundproofed, but because of their shit loft conversion we are also going to have to soundproof our entire loft to make it worth it.

Have you thought of using soundproofing boards on your walls?

bruise · 11/11/2018 22:20

Soundproofing, white noise machine and foam squishy earplugs. Had to use the two latter in a house we used to rent. When the neighbour walked up her stairs and turned her bedroom light on it sounded like she was in our house, walking into our bedroom! She got flooded out and ended up living in her bedroom for a while, used to watch tv until midnight.

I hated it so much. It's such an intrusion, albeit not thier fault. I hope you find some relief soon

CiderBrains · 11/11/2018 22:26

Oh op I feel your pain. I tried soundproof boards in my bedroom but whilst they have improved things a bit, they aren't what I was expecting as "soundproof." Can still hear neighbours cough 😞

It's soul destroying hearing neighbours because it feels like such an intrusion on your home where you are supposed to feel relaxed and comfortable!

LovingFizz · 18/11/2018 22:01

I sympathise. I'm living next door to an 81 year old woman who is clearly deaf as a post as she blasts her fucking television out until 11pm, I asked her to turn it down and she just said "I'm 81" ... living proof that being an OAP doesn't stop you from being a selfish, inconsiderate twat.
