This packaging takes the piss

I tweeted Waitrose and this was their response:

Hi Sam, reducing our impact on the environment is really important to us and we know it is to our customers too. We have committed to making all our own-label packaging widely recyclable, reusable, or home compostable by 2025.

Surely this product shouldn't have made it onto shelves in the first bloody place! Madness.

There really needs to be a switch to focusing on supermarkets as so much packaging is wasteful. This is a great (poor!) example!

JellyBears · 11/11/2018 07:13

You can recycle those pots! Their really useful.

DailyMailWankers · 11/11/2018 07:16

The inner wrapper looks vacuum packed so probably needed to keep the food fresh...

JellyBears · 11/11/2018 07:16

I would say those pots can go in the recycle bin too.

Maidsrus · 11/11/2018 07:20

Those pots aren’t recycled by council and aren’t we going to have huge problems getting stuff recycled now China won’t take our rubbish?

I agree it’s ridiculous packaging.

Maidsrus · 11/11/2018 07:20

**My council

Maidsrus · 11/11/2018 07:20

Ffs my council

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 11/11/2018 07:22

They can be recycled but why sell it like that in the first place? The outer plastic tub is superfluous. I imagine that their black garlic is more expensive than normal garlic so they are trying to make it look like a premium brand.

Juells · 11/11/2018 07:45

I've seen hard-boiled eggs sold like that in M&S Angry

I read somewhere - probably here! - that Aldi are reducing packaging on their vegetables at Christmas.

insanitypack · 11/11/2018 08:16

I didn't buy it, just snapped it when I saw it.

Who cares if the outer pot can be recycled - that's still unnecessary work!

What type of posh wanker wants black garlic ffs

OP posts:
Clutterbugsmum · 11/11/2018 08:19

The trouble is no 2 councils recycle the same plastic. Companies can not just assume because their 'packaging' is made to be recycled that everyone can.

Although I know garlic has a strong smell I'm not sure why it needs to be in 2 lots of packaging.

insanitypack · 11/11/2018 08:21

My other point is that, if it does indeed need two layers of packaging, why is the outer pot much too large. Could have saved at least a third of the plastic straight away.

Topseyt · 11/11/2018 08:21

I think all supermarkets have now gone overboard with the amount of plastic packaging used. I am always horrified every mealtime just how much plastic there is to go in the recycling bin. It seems to be getting more and more.

SuburbanRhonda · 11/11/2018 08:53

This posh wanker loves black garlic Wink

insanitypack · 11/11/2018 08:56

@SuburbanRhonda Just don't buy it wrapped in layers and layers of plastic

OP posts:
IceRebel · 11/11/2018 08:59

I think all supermarkets have now gone overboard with the amount of plastic packaging used.

I agree, but it always seems to be the customers who are moaned about with regards to recycling rates. It's always us who aren't doing enough, us who have bin collections cut to encourage recycling, us who have 4 or 5 different boxes / bags to separate recycling. Why can't the shops just use less in the first place. Angry

MoonieMoon · 11/11/2018 09:00

Totally missing the point here but that black garlic is incredible. I reuse the pots for storing other things!

ChocolateTearDrops · 11/11/2018 09:02

Ooh that pot looks to be a useful size for my hobby.

(Vague enough? Grin)

It's resealable, clear and a decent size so I can see what's inside it.

insanitypack · 11/11/2018 09:17

Reusing the pots doesn't mean they won't at some point end up in land fill though

OP posts:
SuburbanRhonda · 11/11/2018 10:06

SuburbanRhonda Just don't buy it wrapped in layers and layers of plastic

It’s not really up to you to tell anyone what they should and shouldn’t buy, is it?

SuburbanRhonda · 11/11/2018 10:07

And please don’t @ me - I’m on the thread.

ImpendingDisaster · 11/11/2018 10:12

Suburban, if you're actually buying garlic in a giant plastic pot, then perhaps you do need someone to tell you what you should and shouldn't buy?

Good on you, OP.

SuburbanRhonda · 11/11/2018 10:15

Where did I say I was buying garlic in a “giant” container?

The OP assumed I do because when she called people who like black garlic “posh wankers”, I responded as someone who like black garlic.

I’ve never bought it from Waitrose, not that that’s anyone’s business.

insanitypack · 11/11/2018 10:17

It's everyone's business when this type of waste is rampant. @SuburbanRhonda we're not making the post all about you so don't take it as such
