To ask if you would holiday in Tunisia?

I’m fairly risk-averse but not overly worried about terrorism (as in, it will happen or it won’t, I worry more about putting my seatbelt on and checking my CO2 monitors, that sort of thing).

My lovely DPILs are planning to treat us all to a family holiday and the destination has just been revealed. Tunisia! They have been there before (perhaps 10 years ago) and loved it. I’m apprehensive.

AIBU? I don’t have to go, obviously, but it would be a big thing to then refuse to let the DCs go. I’m just not sure how relaxed I’d be, but that’s the point of what terrorists do I guess? I holidayed in London when the IRA were active. Words of wisdom please?

The area they’re planning on has an “exercise a high degree of caution” advisory.

No no no
I went years ago. Before Sept 11 and the threat of terrorism and I still wouldn't go back.
I actually enjoyed the medinas and went to some gorgeous cafes and sites but as a woman it wasn't safe. My friends were followed and flashed and then wouldn't leave the hotel complex.
I visited Tunis and thought the museum and history was fascinating but I could see amazing things in much nicer countries in my opinion.

France, Spain, Italy, etc. FTW.

I think the cheapness of places like TN and Turkey win for some.

Ugh. And that is not me being snobby, just realistic!

We went in 2003 and had one of the best holidays, We travelled to the salt lake, into the mountains and into the desert. We visited where Star Wars and Monty Python was filmed, flipping amazing. I got a bit of hassle and was yelled at and called a whore in Monastir by an old man that looked like he was from Life Of Brian Confused I was wearing jeans and a long sleeved top but I’ve got blonde hair which apparently is seen as unacceptable Hmm

We went back a few years later for a beach holiday. It was not good. The so called 5 star hotel was pretty dire and we (I) were so hassled by men if we poked our nose out of the grounds. It was all very claustrophobic with an unpleasant vibe. I’d not take my children there on holiday at the moment.

I went to a resort in Sousse 2 weeks before the tragic terrorist incident.

Bearing in mind, the incident had not happened yet, as soon as I landed I wrote a complaint to Thomas Cook about resort safety and how unsafe I felt on the hotel beach and pools because there were non holiday makers wandering around them at ALL hours. I felt so uncomfortable there.

It was the worst holiday I have ever been on.

No because it was a filthy hellhole.
A staff member sexually assaulted a young brit (small girl) in the lobby toilets and when her dad, rightly, ran after the man (he was disturbed) he was held back by the hotel staff and then beaten up by the police when they arrived
That was nice ...
Was bloody ducking terrifying. Holiday co whipped the family away the next day and we know no more.

Was there in July with hubby and almost 2 year old (at the time) And loved it! It was very hot at that time though! Would definitely go back!

I’ve never been but I wouldn’t discount it on the basis of terror etc. Especially as it is only the UK who has stopped travel- the rest of the EU has been travelling there even very soon after the terrorist attacks. I’d likely not want to go if I heard reports like have been given on this thread though- clearly depends on where you go and whether you’re just going to be hemmed in a resort all week. But some of the posts on this thread wouldn’t make me want to go at all!

DarklyDreamingDexter · 10/11/2018 21:27

No, I certainly wouldn't. The security risk is one thing (a big thing!) but friends who went were hassled and sexually harassed so badly by men in the street they spent most of the holiday hiding inside the 4* hotel...where they got horrendous food poisoning. You couldn't pay me enough to go there. There are lots of nicer alternatives for a bit of early season sunshine. How about the Canary Islands?

PersonaNonGarter · 10/11/2018 21:28

No, don’t go.

Wauden · 10/11/2018 21:34

Probably not because they treat the women so badly there.
