Am I too fat or is there another reason my knees hurt so much?

I am quite overweight and I definitely need to do something about that

But my knees have never been so painful 😖

No recent injuries etc, yet if I sit with my knees bent for more than half a minute or so they are making me have to breath through the pain as I straighten them (I'm not saying its as painful as labour but seems to require me doing that to manage the pain)

I will go to the GP but just baffled- it's both knees and been happening here and there through my life but usually went away within a week and was one knee (so I assumed injury)

I now have had both knees do this to me for about 4-5 weeks. It's been fine as in I've still managed to do everything more or less but today it's so bad I have had to lie down and straighten my legs as knees are burning/aching just walking around

I'm only in my 30s.... it's unlikely to be arthritis isn't it?

I hate to say it but while you are overweight the GP will only treat your pain with painkillers.

This is true in our experience too - DH went to the GP a few times with his knee pain and this is what happened (his BMI is around 29, his weight wasn't mentioned though). He had to see private consultants for the treatment he received (a knee surgeon and then referred to a rheumatologist). I would see an osteopath first and start the process of losing weight.

Sad news, you can get rheumatoid arthritis in your 30s quite normally.
Good news though, catch it early and you can stop it getting worse.

I hate to say it but while you are overweight the GP will only treat your pain with painkillers. mine gave me tablets for arthritis, an inflammatory type thing that helped, he also arranged keyhole surgery which led 18 months later to my first knee replacement. Not once did anyone say ' lose weight' I still got the surgery.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/11/2018 21:14

I hate to say it
But it’s probably a major factor
I lost 3 stone upon GP advice for persistent back pain
Guess what ? No more back pain

Your GP will have an opinion but if you imagine a child that weighs how much you are over your ideal weight - well you are carrying that child all of the time . So I was carrying a fairly chunky toddler ! No wonder

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 11/11/2018 21:18

Also some interesting advice here about supplements for you

Also try for physio - I still do the exercises they gave me , every day if I can

But be open to hearing what the GP has to say and ask them if there is a link

How overweight are you weight wise? If a few stone just imagine you are carrying about a person of that weight on a daily basis. It will cause joint problems in the long run.

I'm a bit heavier than I should be, about 1/2 stone and my knees sometimes ache but being 50 I have been walking around on them for 49 years so it could be an age thing too.

JillyArmeeen · 11/11/2018 21:31

I would bet being overweight isn't helping your knee problems but it might not be the only cause.
I'm not over weight and have never been over weight.
I've been having knee problems on and off for about 7 years now and Im only in my early 30s.
Lots of clicking, stiffness and pain.
I think it is just wear and tear from using my knees lots and being on my feet all day at work on hard floors, bending to fetch things, working long hours.
I've never been to the doctor about it because I have no faith they will do anything to help me but it's getting to the point now I will have to go, I'm currently struggling to drive without my knees seizing up.
Whatever is going on it is definitely nothing to do with my weight.

After my first pregnancy when I was 26 I started having a lot of pain in my knees. I put up with it for a good while until I was struggling to get up the stairs, (I wasn't overweight). I was told by the consultant that i had a genetic knee condition where the knee caps where slightly out of place, so they were rubbing off the femor when I walked and causing pain. Aside from pain it also causes wear and tear. The extra weight during pregnancy had set it off, and I have suffered with it on and off since. I am overweight now which doesn't help. I was given exercises to do to strengthen the muscles in the legs to take as much pressure off the knees as possible. I can't remember what the condition is called, but it's possible it's what your problem is.

the knees are very unstable joint and you really need the muscles around it to be strong for the knee to function properly
