To be considering using tin foil as gift wrap?

I wasn’t aware yesterday that a lot of wrapping paper can’t be recycled and with Christmas coming up I don’t want to use the stuff I’d normally get. The person who told me will be using brown paper and ribbons, which I’ll probably do and have already been saving ideas from Pinterest. However, I also wondered about in foil as this can be recycled too and would be more eye catching to my three year old. It also means no sellotape required. I’d make it look pretty with gift tags and ribbon.

So AIBU to use this and not just brown paper?

Thanks.

I've cut myself on foil before so wouldn't want to use it to wrap presents. I think brown papers the way to go. Maybe your three year old could decorate it using a stamp and ink?

We have an open fire so the wrapping paper goes in the fire and gets burnt. Keeps us warm and solves the recycling dilemma. Although what about birthday paper? The recycling men always take that.

DP did foil last year, and by his own admission is reverting to wrapping paper now! Can see the theory but IMO it looks like the Christmas joint is under the tree by mistake! Brown paper looks fab.

We have gift bags that are years old too.
You can usually get packs quite cheaply from Tiger or IKEA etc.

daphine2004 · 10/11/2018 21:03

I have gift bags too and never, ever write on tags! Lol.

I hadn’t realised that about tin foil, I’ll definitely leave that for the meat.

We tend to wrap the turkey in tin foil and he does look really good.

Katedotness1963 · 10/11/2018 21:06

I've cut myself on tin foil, more than once. I saw a cute idea on FB today, the presents were covered in brown paper and then a black and white picture was attached to show who the gift was for. It looked really good under the tree.

Pooleschoolschoice · 10/11/2018 21:08

Im confused by this as our local authority recycle wrapping paper as long as it isnt "foil wrapping paper" which we don't buy anyway as sellotape doesn't work on it!

I've seen all the virtue signally posts on facebook but it just isnt true...

Buy some fabric and ribbons and reuse every year! I got some in a charity shop (possibly was a curtain) and cut into a range of sizes, so sometimes the piece is a bit too big, but it still looks great!

I'm doing mine in newspaper this year, thought it would look shit but actually a pile of presents in newspaper looks quite fun, and if they get bored waiting to open them they can always read them Grin just cant bring myself to pay money for it all to be ripped into a pile and binned, such a waste. we recycle the newspaper anyway.

Pooleschoolschoice · 10/11/2018 22:12

I think the wrapping paper we buy is probably cheaper than a proper paper...

Foil can be lethal. I once sliced a finger open when I wasn't paying attention.

Not a great idea for an excited 3yr old.

Ibizama · 10/11/2018 22:21

That's it!! Xmas fabric off cuts tied with ribbon. I actually never thought of that before and we recycle a lot

Londongirl888 · 10/11/2018 22:28

Sorry just no.

MabelFurball · 10/11/2018 22:30

I have used llama patterned tin foil for wrapping presents before. It was the llama pattern that enticed me. I wouldn't have bothered if it was just plain tin foil.

AlmostAlwyn · 12/11/2018 11:27

Sorry, I know this discussion seems to have petered off, but... llama patterned tin foil?! Shock

missmouse101 · 12/11/2018 11:30

I love using things like new pretty tea towels to wrap presents with.

LadyofMisrule · 12/11/2018 12:11

I once wrapped a soft toy in tinfoil when we ran out of wrapping paper. It was always referred to after that as "oven-ready Teddy"

spanishwife · 12/11/2018 12:13

Our local authority recycles practically anything

They'll take it, doesn't mean it actually gets recycled. A lot of stuff is refused at the plant.

A lot of people don't know that as soon as any cardboard has food/oil on it (pizza boxes), it can't be recycled

Billydessert · 12/11/2018 12:21

I wrap my presents in the brown packing paper that comes in Amazon delivery boxes!!
I spend all year carefully folding it back up and store it away and always get positive comments. Looks cracking tied with a bit of red and white string!

Nicecupofcoco · 12/11/2018 12:29

Gavin and Stacey! Grin just scrunch and your done! 😂
No harm at all, if you wanna go for tin foil then go for it. Much less time consuming then the paper and tape I'd imagine!

Billydessert · 12/11/2018 12:33

Amazon's finest! Looks better when there's lots of presents and they're under the tree but you get the idea

To be considering using tin foil as gift wrap?
Shiklah · 12/11/2018 12:35

I've done this, well Santa did one year when he ran out. We re used it cooling the xmas dinner as we'd run out of foil too. Fun times.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/11/2018 12:47

I have a friend who wraps presents in the financial times and I always think that looks great

A bit OT, but if you're making a pass-the-parcel, alternate layers of FT and any other paper make it easier for kids to just rip off one layer.

We wrap our dog's presents in newspaper or pages from a magazine - hm, I've got a stack of old New Scientists, they usually have some cool artwork so maybe I should use some of those or nature mags for people presents.
