To think this company is taking it too far chasing a payment that is 3 days late?

My car finance company was meant to collect the usual payment on Monday, however I’d had a bit of fraud over the weekend and the direct debit bounced, which I didn’t notice until late on Monday. I rang them on Tuesday to explain and said I was hoping it would be sorted in the next few days as it was “only” £450 stolen but meant the £220 car payment couldn’t come out.

I got calls from Tuesday afternoon, all day yesterday and today chasing the payment. Yesterday I had 10 missed calls, all of which had voicemails left (I was at work so couldn’t answer) and then tonight I got this on WhatsApp from a member of their collections team

AIBU to think this is heavy handed as hell? Luckily the money got sorted today so I replied to say I can make the payment and this person can’t even take it from me, I have to wait until tomorrow to pay it!

Block their number and tell them to stop harassing you, and that you will report their behaviour to the FCA.

HannahHut · 09/11/2018 11:28

zee sure it was twice in 30 years. But it was also twice in 3 months. If you're having financial difficulties then it is your responsibility to report that. Companies can't contact every customer every month to just check in and see if they can still afford it. How ridiculous.

If you can't pay something back it's your own fault for spending it. Don't spend up to your new credit limit. Or contact the company to reduce it, you can also opt out of future credit limit increases.

I hate this attitude of "you made me spend it, it's not my fault", at the end of the day people choose to spend that money, of course I understand if circumstances change and credit card company's have a financial difficulties department. All I get all day is abuse from people who spent more than they should have and somehow it's my problem that they can't pay it back and they're in arrears or facing charges that were clearly in the Ts and C's. The abuse is unreal day to day.

Caprisunorange · 09/11/2018 11:34

Ha ha how naive Hannah. I bet your company don’t do a thing to encourage unaffordable lending eh? Wink

HannahHut · 09/11/2018 11:38

capris we do offer credit limit increases automatically if that's what you mean. But as I said these are opt out and can be decreased whenever the customer likes.

It just really hits a nerve with me, my mother was and still is in debt since before I was born but she always has an attitude that it's someone else's fault. But she won't stop borrowing and making the situation worse. It's so frustrating.

Like I said earlier, I don't agree on the hounding the op received but I think people should remember that the people on the other end of the phone aren't being personal, they have a job and could get fired for not following procedures. I've wanted to remove fees for people before because I understand you just forget but I'm not able to, it's not a great job sometimes as you can imagine 😟

Caprisunorange · 09/11/2018 11:40

It’s not a great job. It’s worse being unable to pay your debt and being harassed unprofessionally and illegally though.

HannahHut · 09/11/2018 11:42

capris I agree, which I why I do it!

Caprisunorange · 09/11/2018 11:44

But surely you don’t expect any sympathy for it? I have no sympathy at all for companies who lend money or offer credit then can’t deal with non payment professionally. What’s worse is the general public siding with the company rather than the man on the street who is being fucked over again and again and again. We should be fighting these companies to improve life for our fellow human beings, not defending them

HannahHut · 09/11/2018 11:49

I don't agree that this hounding is professional or should be happening like I said earlier.

I don't want sympathy, it's a job and I have to do it. I just wished people realised the people on the phones are just doing a job and don't have a personal vendetta. I've had death threats and the lot, it's kind of unbelievable and not at all what I expected considering I'm just customer service and not even in the collections department!

I’ve been in debt before, 12 years ago, and it’s horrific and I’ve cried on the phone to companies before when they haven’t helped out as much as I liked. This was when we had fewer consumer rights mind. But there’s never any excuses for threats. The only time I got arsey with anyone was actually after I’d got out of 95% of my debt, but a woman rang from a company who I owed £250 asked me why I didn’t answer my phone on Saturday. I told her it was my wedding day and I was a bit busy. She said “Why are you getting married when you’re in debt” Hmm I told her to curb the attitude, she only answers the phone for living so get off the power trip, and hung up. I dealt with that company via letter (and paid it about a week later).

tattiusteddius she sounds like a cow. I'll be honest there are some of them but they don't last long. Believe me. You get calls listened into weekly and they pick up on these people, your feedback also really helps get that kind of person out of that job.

shearwater · 09/11/2018 12:08

This isn't a case if "you made me spend it, it's not my fault", Hannah, RTFT, and stop projecting.

This is a case of a temporary cashflow problem due to fraud, and the company will get paid this month, just a few days late. They should be sending a letter saying "We will collect the payment again on X date", not making multiple calls.

HannahHut · 09/11/2018 12:10

Shearwater that was in a comment towards zee. Please rtft

shearwater · 09/11/2018 12:13

You are harping on about your own situation in every post, not just that one.

myusernameisnotmyusername · 09/11/2018 20:36

I work in credit control and my customers would complain if I chased them that much. However I once went over my credit card limit and got severely chased to pay some money by the bank.
