Neighbour. Parcels. Intercom. WWYD.

More of a WWYD...

We live in an apartment at 220. Our neighbour is 220A. We own ours - next doors is rented (relevant). In the past we have had the intercom go and figured out you needed to dial 320 to get through to our neighvbours - passed it on and jobs a goodun. New (in the last 12 months) neighbour. Perfectly pleasant.

There was a new intercom system put in approx 3 months ago and the management company wrote to residents explaining it would ring our mobile phones rather than the intercom phone in the residences so could they provide a mobile number. I don't know if ALL residents were written to or only homeowners, or if their LL got the correspondence and hasn't passed it on.

I am, almost daily, having the intercom ring my mobile. As my husband often orders things, I have answered and it has been for 220A each time. I have said to the courier to call 320 and said I was not happy to let them in as I was not on site and they could be anyone.

I said to DH about it last night and that I was going to knock and let next door know, and politely ask could they give their mobile number over.

DH says that unless we know something is being delivered to ignore it.

I think that unless neighbour knows, they don't have a chance to correct it and will miss their parcels and we all know what a PITA it is to try and collect parcels from depots.

So.... WWYD:

A) Knock and speak to neighbour, telling them their intercom number is 320 and asking them to contact the management company and provide a mobile number; OR
B) Ignore the intercom calls unless I know 100% it's for us.

As an aside, I've also been called for number 200... clearly the courier was just dialing apartment numbers until he got SOMEONE to answer.

Just knock and speak to the neighbour. Why would that be an issue?

teaandtoast · 08/11/2018 13:45

Stick a note on the intercom as well.

BlueBug45 · 08/11/2018 13:46

Talk to the neighbour.

Are you afraid of them?

cjt110 · 08/11/2018 13:49

I'm not afraid of the neighbor at all and would happily knock on and speak to them. DH is of the attitude it's tough shit and to ignore any calls that we know aren't for us.

I have stuck a note on the intercom previously and the bloody cleaner takes it down ... Hmm

It's a pretty rubbish intercom system.
Why would any delivery person think to ring 320 instead of 220a?

PilarTernera · 08/11/2018 13:54

I would do both. I would speak to the neighbour and also ignore intercom calls if I was not at home. Your husband is clearly not worried about the stuff he has ordered, so you don't need to worry about it either.

cjt110 · 08/11/2018 13:56

BruceAndNosh Who bloody knows. As I understand it, 220 was supposed to be one HUGE apartment when it was built but then for council tax purposes, they chopped it in half and made 220 and 220A... Christ knows why why didn't just call it 221!

I don't even know if our neighbour knows about it - hence why I think I should just mention it. If, after that it carries on, I would be "happy" to ignore.

Just talk to them. It’s no big deal, they’d prefer to know and it’s not their error so your husband can’t blame them and say it’s tough shit.
