to think that the teacher should have written out the school report again

DS is in reception. Today we had his parent teacher conference, where they hand out report cards. The report card has spaces for each skill with the 'level' he has reached plus a space for writing general comments about him. At the conference, the general comments bit was blank. She said "oh sorry- I wrote it but my computer deleted it." I was sad- it felt so shoddy not to have this ready for us. I love to read the comments on my DCs reports- both the positive stuff, which I cherish, and the areas for improvement. Especially as this is his first one ever, and I was looking forward to saving it.

Am I being precious and entitled to think this is a part of her job, and if her computer deleted it, she should have redone it? I would never hand in a blank piece of work to a client. Is this equivalent? Would I be 'that mother' if I asked her to write it out again?

OP it's one of the key tenets of this site that you can't criticise, or even hint at criticising, teachers on Mumsnet.

On the contrary, MN is like an outpost of the Daily Mail in it's attitude to teachers!

There seems to be the attitude that the mere biological fact of creating a child makes you an educational expert, one assumes that doctors and dentists are also told how to ply their trade too.
This unfortunate incident is easily remedied but feel free to go into school all guns blazing, the staffroom needs some good laughs.

Yes, because that's exactly the sort of comment that won't lead to people thinking negatively of teachers...

Dh is a teacher and if his computer lost any reports he would be expected to do them again.

We once had to wait for a report from a certain subject at dd's school due to personal circumstances but we got them eventually (Mid January instead of Mid December)

janisposh · 08/11/2018 10:15

I wouldn't worry, surely during a face to face meeting you discussed it anyway?

tillytrotter21 · 08/11/2018 10:15

Most people here don't need to be 'leadl, they can manage that all by themselves!

You're the only poster who's suggested anything like that? Most pp who've said they'd want the report completing have not said they would be angry/demanding/MN favourite "fuming" about it. They'd just ask.

I'm totally rubbish at remembering verbal information so I would also want a hard copy to refer to. I have all my ds's report cards and do actually look at them now and again... (Not the YR one though, that was dreadful and I cried, despite teacher's warning me it wouldn't be good Sad)

Those who are saying their child was referred to as the wrong name, or as she instead of he or vice versa: This will likely be a copy and paste error. Teachers will copy and paste some phrases because the likelihood is that with 30 children some comments will apply to more than one child. Or, they have a set phrasing which they copy and paste, changing adjectives /adverbs as appropriate to the child. The teacher has then forgotten to change the pronouns.

Eg generic formula with underlines to be changed as appropriate :
This year Freddie has impressed with his excellent listening skills. He always listens attentively when we do whole class circle time. This term her particularly enjoyed plastering himself in paint while pretending to be Jackson Pollock.

Drummingisfun · 08/11/2018 13:31

See. I was only writing one and I still managed to write her instead of he.
Some schools swap reports between teachers and proof read to avoid these errors.

Butterymuffin · 08/11/2018 13:33

If she didn't have time to redo it on the day that's one thing, but I think she should have offered to type it again and send it on to you later, and that's what I would ask for now.

ReadWriteDraw · 08/11/2018 13:35

Drummingisfun - exactly! I’d defy anybody on Mumsnet to come up with more than a couple of ways to say “he understands times tables up to 10” or “...has loved geography in Year 1”. There just isn’t and so copy and paste is the most efficient way.
Do people think that lawyers write every contract from scratch for example?

LucieMorningstar · 08/11/2018 13:38

We don’t get comments on our termly report cards at all. Just a very vague offering of where they are and where they should be.

I wonder if the other 29ish children in the class also had blank comments boxes and the teacher simply didn’t have time to re-type everything.

smithsally884 · 08/11/2018 13:40

My Dcs school once made a massive error and many children's school report was put in the envelope of the child immediately after them in the register. After that they switched to a system called 'my child at school' where you log on to view your child's report.
