DH thinks I should go to the GP but I don't want to waste their time (tmi)

Beware- mensies thread for those who are uncomfortable about it.
Ok so I've never had a regular period. 1 or 2 days max every 6+ months. This was put down to PCOS after a scan and other symptoms matched. I'm not being treated for this but am on the waiting list. I gave birth 11 months ago and had my regular menstruation in January - for 2 days . Ive not had anything since January until now. But it's nothing like I've ever experienced before. This is day 17 of this period and it's not showing any signs of lightening up any time soon. My stomach is very tender too. My DH thinks I should go to the GP but I don't want to waste their time if it's no big deal. Just wanted to know if I'm being unreasonable and should go or not. I don't know if this is a normal thing.

I think you should go, especially in light of unusual bleeding and tenderness. Could you take a preg test just to rule that out?

SpaceCannotBeLeftBlank · 07/11/2018 16:52

Go to the GP. You need to be so careful about things like sepsis when it comes to unusual bleeding.

TurkeyBear · 07/11/2018 16:55

Fuck the GP. Go straight to A&E after bleeding so long and with a tender abdomen. Why is this even a question? Go!!!

poptartprincess · 07/11/2018 16:58

I'll take a pregnancy test, do I wait until the morning or do it now? And i didn't realise it was a big deal. I've never had a "normal" period before so I thought it might be a normal thing

Gp here - id want to see you. Nothing urgent in mind, but would want to try to get something done for you. You mentioned being on waiting list - is that for gynae? Would you consider trying anything in meantime like the pill just to try and get regular period back? would also be good to get an up to date ultrasound. Can’t remember guidance off top of my head but there is a certain number of periods per year (maybe 4 but don’t quote me) that we like to aim for just to prevent lining of womb building up. If you haven’t had any tests done for a while and you think this feels different to previous PCOS (particularly the pain) would be reasonable to consider alternative causes too. You would defo not be time wasting!!

Owlwantstoshare · 07/11/2018 17:01

You need to see someone ASAP. This is unusual for you and losing that much blood for 17 days is not good at all never mind the tenderness in your stomach. Ring 111 at the very least. You need to be seen and sorted OP.

Lifeisabeach09 · 07/11/2018 17:02

Definitely go to GP providing you can get an urgent appointment. Go to A & E if you are bleeding extremely heavily (soaking pads hourly, for instance) and feeling weak, fatigued, low energy.

Funbun32 · 07/11/2018 17:06

Sorry missed the bit about d17 bleeding - it could still be part of an irregular period pattern but v reasonable to get seen and get your cervix checked etc. Re a and e - v much depends on how severe your abdo pain is/if you feel unwell - given that you’re not even sure you need to see Gp I’m not necessarily getting the feeling that you feel that you’re significantly unwell? Most ed depts a bit shit at gynae - they’d do a preg test and check your bloods but very unlikely to get a speculum out.

Defo do a preg test - if it’s positive I’d be more concerned and tell you to get checked out ASAP for bleeding and pain - 111 would be v appropriate if you weren’t sure whether or not to go to a and e. Other thinks to look out for are shoulder tip pain or lightheadedness.

Groovee · 07/11/2018 17:11

As it isn't "normal" for you, I would get checked out.

poptartprincess · 07/11/2018 17:14

Okay, have asked DH to grab test on way home. Id prefer not to got to a&e but obviously will if necessary. Bleeding is heavier than usual but not overly. I've got an appointment with Gynea in Jan for PCOS. I'll keep an eye on the pain and the lightheadedness. Thank you all

You need to see someone good about your PCOS. Push your GP to hurry tha along- howlong have you been waiting?

You're possibly bleeding due to many many months of build up of the lining with irregular and incomplete ovulation.

Have you tried ibuprofen every 4 hrs or Tranexamic acid (from Boots for heavy periods.) Get some. That's all a GP would offer you now.

When you feel better see your GP and have a blood test for anaemia- losing all the blood.

QueenoftheNights · 07/11/2018 17:17

The Ibuprofen will help stop the bleed as will the period tabs .

QueenoftheNights · 07/11/2018 17:18

Those people who suggest calling 111. it's not really any good They use a computer program to run the questions and answers in. You are not always speaking to anyone trained and at the end of the call they are likely to tell you to go to A&E or see your GP. The service is a waste of time.

MyBrexitIsIll · 07/11/2018 17:19

What funbun said.
Periods that last 15~20 days are nit that unsual or worrying. But the GP will be able to help you to stop them.

Also the prevent issues with osteoporosis and cancer prevention (if I remember well) you shouldnt go more than 40~50 days wo à periods.

Theworldisfullofgs · 07/11/2018 17:21

Book an appointment!

Over50andfab · 07/11/2018 17:22

Amazed that you could conceive if so little in the way of bleeding...congratulations.

I’ve had pretty well the opposite in that I’ve had excessively heavy periods over the years - I used a menstruated cup and pads. A few times (3-4) I had periods like you have now - very heavy, clotty and wouldn’t stop. After about 1 month I was given pills (primolut) which stopped the bleeding.

I’d say the tender stomach would have me seeing the GP more than anything. I hope you can get an appointment soon OP.

Mitzimaybe · 07/11/2018 17:23

Make a GP appointment ASAP. You will not be wasting their time - look, a GP on this thread has said so.

Go to A&E if you start to feel feverish, are bleeding heavily, feel faint or the abdominal tenderness gets any worse.

EarlyModernParent · 07/11/2018 17:29

You don't have to be sure or even confident that it is serious before getting medical advice. Let a trained medic decide whether or not it is a big deal. They will think of possibilities you don't know about and check for them.

Because you are worth it.

Seriously!

notapizzaeater · 07/11/2018 17:35

The light headless might be from so much blood loss, you really need to see your gp.

susurration · 07/11/2018 18:00

If you're in pain and your stomach feels bloated or tender I think a GP appointment to check for infection might be a good idea.

As for the PCOS: the recommended number of periods per year for a woman with PCOS is 4, and if you're not achieving this then you need to see a doctor to induce a period. If you're in the West Midlands or Warwickshire there is a specific PCOS clinic at Coventry hospital, and possibly at other hospitals but i'm not sure. There is a PCOS charity called Verity who have various support groups on facebook too.

DeadGood · 07/11/2018 18:04

Hope you feel better soon, OP.

By the way, there is nothing TMI about this thread. I don’t think you needed to issue a warning either.

HoleyCoMoley · 07/11/2018 18:05

How can ibuprofen stop bleeding, I thought it aggravated bleeding

Pebblesandfriends · 07/11/2018 19:22

Don't touch the ibuprofen until you do a pregnancy test Hmm
