Walking the school run.

allwalkedout · 07/11/2018 13:44

I live in a fairly rural area. Cool is 2 miles away and I have one child in full time school and one in pre-school every morning.
I usually take the car to do the school run but do walk it a couple of times a week for one run of the day ( I do it 3x) . Yesterday my car was in the garage so I walked all 3 School runs so totalled 12 miles but it took a huge chunk out of my day and I felt like I didn’t get much done.
I’m a fairly fit person and do triathlons so I’m not unused to physical exercise and didn’t find the walks difficult, just really inconvenient timing wise.
When walking back, another Mum commented that she thought it was odd that I didn’t do it every day and that she thought it wouldn’t be too much of an effort for me to do the 3 runs on foot every day. I asked her if she would and she said she would and that most people she knew would.
I know it’s possible...but realistically, would people really do 3x 4 mile School runs in a day?? Aibu to think most people would find that a bit much, especially since I have a toddler who is confined to the pushchair or carrier for large amounts of time and it means I don’t get the time to do much with him...or am I just lazy??

School, not cool. I’m clearly lazy with proof reading.

I think i would get a bicycle

salopek · 07/11/2018 13:46

I wouldn't. Once every so often fine, but not every day!

Heismyopendoor · 07/11/2018 13:46

No I wouldn’t do that.

Thehop · 07/11/2018 13:47

Jesus Christ, is do it now and again, but not regularly!

She’s being insane

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 07/11/2018 13:47

God no, I’m far too lazy. Ours is half a mile away and I still drive Grin

Shoppingwithmother · 07/11/2018 13:48

In all honesty I know very few people who would do it once....a month.

None of her business really eithet

Shoppingwithmother · 07/11/2018 13:48

Either!

xJessica · 07/11/2018 13:49

Who has time to do that regularly?!!

PhilomenaButterfly · 07/11/2018 13:49

No way. We walk because we don't have a car, and because it's a 20 minute walk. I know people who do the same distance by bus! Shock

allwalkedout · 07/11/2018 13:51

@medea13, I thought about that but there isn’t really a route I’m confident in taking 3 children on by myself (toddler would be on my bike) but the other 2 wouldn’t and my kids have never liked the trailers. Also going to school would be fine as it’s down hill but the return journey is all of climbing. Very tricky for little legs.

I bet she’s full of shite. You should have asked her if she DOES walk the same amount, rather than if she WOULD. I’m fit, as I’m out walking dogs for miles, due to my job. However walking for the sake of it and losing most of your day to it, is just silly. If she mentions it again I would just smile sweetly and tell her you have such a busy life and too much to do, to waste it walking for the sake of it.

makingmiracles · 07/11/2018 13:52

Yanbu, our school is 3 miles away, I worked out it takes around 1hr to get there and around 1.5hr back(big hill) so would take a 5hr Chuck out of my day and because of what time schools start we would have to leave at 7.20, get up at 6.20 etc so just not worth it unless absolutely necessary (when cars in for repairs etc)
I also have a toddler and although she could walk some of it, she would probably tire easily and be bored just sat in her pushchair for such a long time.
Def think others mums are bu.

TetherEnding · 07/11/2018 13:52

I'll be blunt: she's lying. There is no way in the world that "most people" have the time to walk (walk! not even run!) 12 miles per day. Never mind the inclination. It's almost half a fucking marathon Grin. Nuts.

ParliamentOfRavens · 07/11/2018 13:54

I do the 1.3 mile walk twice a day (drop-off then home, and pick up), so 5.2 miles a day. (Only 1 family car which DP needs for work, i work from home.)

Technically it should take me 26 minutes eaxh way according to google maps, except that it is up hill both ways (with a valley in the middle, not just how it feels) and coaxing a 3yr old on is time consuming, so we usually average 35-45 minutes each way. If i had to do another run for a second child i’d probably consider home schooling Grin

I bet whoever said that to you has no intention of doing the necessary 3+ hrs walking everyday themselves, they just wanted to feel superior.

FlowerPotMum · 07/11/2018 13:55

I know nobody who would do that, by choice everyday!. Once in a while, yup but certainly not everyday. The sheer chunk of time taken up by it would drive you mad.

Marylou2 · 07/11/2018 13:55

DDs primary school was 2 miles away and during the 7 years she was there I didn’t walk it at all. Who has time to do this every day? This woman is clearly crazy. Just don’t listen and carry on with life as you where.

howabout · 07/11/2018 13:58

I wouldn't. Having to take one of mine that distance by car atm and that is bad enough for taking time out my day. Otoh, road works on Monday meant I could have walked quicker.

Unless you are one of the running club I passed in the pitch black pouring rain on Monday night I don't think you would do this. Willing to bet they drive to school / work all day in order to have enough time and energy to run in the evening - they looked that insane. Slightly off topic but only time I would be judging you for not walking to school.

allwalkedout · 07/11/2018 14:03

@howabout, haha, I actually am part of a running club and run in all conditions throughout the year. Snow up to my knees and I’m still out in the dark Grin. It does sound insane when it’s said aloud or written down but I love it. I still think that amount of walking is nuts!

RandomMess · 07/11/2018 14:04

I used to walk morning and afternoons but do the lunch time trip in the car.

mrsoutnumbered · 07/11/2018 14:11

I did a few weeks of doing school runs for a school 2 miles away (so my kids were walking 4 miles a day, I was walking 8 miles and that didn't include any shopping/errands I had to do) and it wiped me out. I felt terrible and was so relieved when my son got a place at a nearer school!

You are definitely not lazy!!!

monty09 · 07/11/2018 14:12

Well I don't drive so if my kids school was that far then I would have to.

allwalkedout · 07/11/2018 14:17

@monty necessity is different...would you choose to? She was saying that I was making a lazy choice (though she never actually used the word lazy, it was definitely implied!).

OP posts:
HopeGarden · 07/11/2018 14:19

I bet there’s very few people who’d walk a school run like that every day by choice.

Mookatron · 07/11/2018 14:25

I have done this and it was such a pain in the arse. I nearly cried with relief when the younger started full time!
